LG TV and YAS-108 - Can't Connect with HDMI (ARC) Help Please?

So I bought this sound bar, but I can't for the life of me get it to connect to my TV with HDMI (ARC).

I've got a 4K LG TV, and I've connected the HDMI cable from the HDMI Out (ARC) port in the YAS-108 to the HDMI In (ARC) port on my TV, changed the audio source to HDMI (ARC)/Optical and made sure simplink is on.

It's my understanding that the one HDMI cable is all I need, right? I've tried 3 different HDMI cables including my Xbox One X cable, which is certified high speed.

I've spent hours trying, but I'm at a loss here. I've so far resorted to using just the optical cable, buy I want to use HDMI so I can control the subwoofer with my TV remote.

Anyone run into similar problems?

Check Page 37 in YAS-108's manual. Is the HDMI control function properly enabled?

Argh, it was this all along. I had actually already tried this last night when I checked the manual but found it did nothing. I tried it again just now, but this time I held the button down for even longer until the lights stopped flashing (last night I released the button once the lights STARTED flashing). Voila, it works and I can control the volume with my TV remote now. No need for the optical cable now. Wasted hours on something that wasn't explained well at all. Thank you!

      • Hey I might try this later.

        • Yeah it works now.. weird
          ….

  • Have you enabled all CEC/ARC options in your TV?

I had some good and some frustrating experience with ARC and CEC. Most recently setup a combination of Soniq TV - Pioneer Receiver - Vodafone TV to work seamlessly.

But, Soniq TV - Panasonic Soundbar - Vodafone TV combination is working in completely unpredictable way…

  • connected the HDMI cable from the HDMI Out (ARC) port in the YAS-108 to the HDMI In (ARC) port on my TV

I think you've got the connection the wrong direction. As far as I'm aware (and I may well be wrong), if you want the TV to control the subwoofer, you need HDMI-out(ARC) on the TV and the HDMI-in(ARC) on the Sub. Because you're wanting the signals to go out of the TV in to the Sub. (someone correct me if there's error in my logic.)

See if that helps, but if not - yeah might be a settings issue.

I thought the same thing, so I downloaded the Owners Manual to check and it turns out that OP is doing exactly what page 23 of the YAS manual says is the correct connections. It still seems backwards to me!

It's quite confusing, but the HDMI IN port in the soundbar is for connecting other devices, like a game console, so you don't lose one HDMI port on your TV. That device's signal goes into the soundbar, but then out of the HDMI OUT, which sends that signal to the TV's HDMI IN.

What you said is how HDMI would normally work, like what I just wrote above. But it's my understanding that the ARC feature does exactly what you confuses you. It allows signals to be reversed or go both ways, i.e. it'll allow signals to be sent back from the HDMI IN source (the TV remote controls) to HDMI OUT (the soundbar), hence creating that connection and control from the TV.

      • Oh that makes sense!

  • i have LG 3D FHD smart TV (around 6 years old model) and the same YAMAHA sound bar.
i got it works but on and off randomly. spent hours hours days weeks to try them work but then just gave up. yes i read manual, i know ARC CEC bla bla bla.

so now i just use optical cable. the issue is you need to use their own remote to turn on sound bar. my solution: use logitect remote to combine tv and sbar remotes into 1.

according to my research years ago, the issue is with ARC. there are not really standardize and different brands might be incompatible in some ways.

  • I've had issues previously with other connected equipment stuffing up the HDMI-CEC signals. Try solely connecting your tv to the sound bar and see if that works.

  • Do a factory Reset

Download the App more useful than you realise

Confirm the firmware is up to date

Make sure you have enabled the settings as per manual

Make sure that TV doesn't have an advanced mode for HDMI that needs switching on to get full benefit and enumerate correctly.

That will be in your LG Manual I know other TV's have it as not everything works on the latest standard so you tend to switch on.

  • You have to Select "TV" not "HDMI" on the soundbar.

    • Actually, 'TV' is for optical by default. TV does nothing unless the HDMI control is enabled. Once the HDMI control function is enabled by holding the 'HDMI' button for a number of seconds while the soundbar is off, pressing the 'HDMI' button does nothing afterwards as it just automatically changes to 'TV'. I don't think 'HDMI' has any other purpose other than for enabling HDMI control.

Solved! See response to first reply. Thank you all.

  • I have the yamaha 108 model got from amazon deal few weeks back,in the middle of unpacking aa moved into new house so not hot much time to waste time on right now.i can't seem to get any sound from tv? Im right in saying if tv has hdmi arc then you don't need to use opital cable as thats how i see it on the instructions?
Having the option of putting tv on wall was a pain to put up there.
Had i plugged in opital cable as well as hdmi when setting up would this have worked. It is a target platinum tv from few years ago so not the best tv but we using it for now till we upgrade and put it back in bedroom.
I can get sound from blu ray player but not from dtv i should be able to here sound with that right? I also have apple tv and a kodi box but no Internet yet to try out but will i get sound on yamaha?
I got the yamaha to gives us a better sound in living area until i upgrade to better tv later in year and all i can use it for is with blu ray as said cant test apple tv or kodi until Internet and obviously nothing comes through when watching tv only when i select analog on yamaha.

I can see my blu ray player on the cec settings but not soundbar should my yamaha show on my device list?

  • Im going to have a play around with the sound bar and tv tomorrow as just not had chance and having the tv on wall does not help matters as it has very little room to wall.
I have connected my tv and 108 and my blu ray player as per book the arc on tv to arc on 108 and blu ray to other hdmi on 108. My result was before no sound coming from tv through 108. Thete was not even anything on arc settings to says its there. Yet it says blu ray player was? This was when i first purchased it. Playing around it a couple of times for a very short few seconds i seen the 108 show up and then go.

I started to wonder have i a faulty 108 but I tried putting in a blu ray and it was working. But yet tv was not.
I do happen to have a android box, apple tv so getting this to work through tv is important, obviously the other reason was to improve tv sound.
As its been on wall and as itsa cheap target tv from about 3 yrs ago its probably the arc dont work or dont work with 108.
I have read through the manual did the page 37 enable thing and i can control my tv remote with soundbar but its the sound thing.
Im also sure the 108 should show up on the devices on my arc setting which it dont.
Is it possibly my arc is faulty?
Tonight i thought i disconnect blu ray player from 108 but this made no difference still nothing coming through tv.
Can someone tell me the benifit of using the arc is this so we can use the tvs remote is it better sound or picture.

I been told to leave arc hdmi in and connect the optical cable in that was supplied, what happens there? i lose the function of using tv remote?
I was going to just use both hdmi arc and optical cables when i first set up but as the book said to use arc i did.
As tv is in wall and tv is a bit larger ie thicker than most tvs today there is not a lot of room there even just putting it on wall secure is a task on its own.
So im going yo have to disconnect everything and connect this optical cable as well as it seems it might be my only option.
Have any of you guys had issues and had yo use optical cable also.
And did that work for you.

  • Lol i take tv off wall which aint a easy task due to shape of tv and type of wall bracket was going to install optical cable and guess what there is no place to plug in optical cable. I find that strange as i have an old plasma tv 3 times the age of the target one which i got 3 or 4 yrs ago and that plasma has optical.
So my plans to use optical due to arc issues will not happen now.
Does not always pay to buy cheap tvs i thought i had a plan i got a sony soundbar and sub about 1 month ago on a deal to use for bedroom tv, the old plasma but noticed its optical only lol so that's not going to work on the cheap target tv. I would have been able to use yamaha on plasma as that had optical point but not sure about hdmi arc. But then i cant use my Sony on target tv as no optical.
I know plasma is old and will replace at some point the target one probably also but not yet but it sucks it has no optical point and arc has issues with yamaha 108.
So much for getting it to boost the sound that lacks a bit on target tv.

  • I'm having similar issues with my soundbar connected to a Hisense 50P7. For some reason the TV just doesn't see the soundbar as speakers, even though it detects the HDMI connection. I've tried the process on page 37, and have updated firmware and done a factory reset. The only thing I can think of is the cable might be dodgy, but I've tried 3 different cables with no success. Not sure what to do from here.
