Multi-Region DVD player

Hi guys,

I'm after a Multi-Region DVD player. My mum bought a DVD off eBay but it wont play on our DVD player as its not multi-region. I've read somewhere before that its usually the cheap ones that are multi-region. So basically, i'm after some opinions on which brand to get and hopefully one at a semi cheap price too. If it plays blu-rays or VCR, that's a bonus, but at the moment, my main priority is just a plain multi-region DVD player.

Any suggestions are much appreciated! =D

  • There are ways to make it multi-regional
Try googling around or give us the model number :p

    • Is there a good chance that making a non multi-regional dvd player into a multi-regional one can break it.. or even affect the tv? I've never heard of doing that, so i'm a little hesitant of course.

      • Break it? Nope… it's just a 3 or 4 digit code that you enter using the remote. It allows you to switch the region to a different one, or set it to region-free.

        • Oh cool. In that case, its a Tevion TEV007 DVD/VCR Combo. Although it says on the front page of the manual:

"The DVD player part of this DVD/VCR combo is designed for DVD discs marked 'Region 4' or 'ALL'. Discs with other region designations will not be read. Please only use discs marked 'Region 4' or 'ALL'".

          Will this disclosure affect codes?

        • I've regioned-free my NEC DVD/VHS. no problem.

          plays anything.

punched in the code on the remote as internet site suggested.

Try this I found from a search:

If not, try ringing up Tevion customer service and asking them for the procedure.

    • Thanks. Might give it a try tomorrow when i know i'll be able to ring Tevion for support if i need it. I seriously had no idea you could do that.

I'm still curious though.. how much would you expect to pay for a region free dvd player out of the box?

      • Most of the cheapo ones are region free.

Here is a good list of models and their associated hacks to make DVD region free:

unfortunately, I don't see the Tevion TEV007 there.

    • When this happens, sometimes just google around & see if it's marketed in other countries under a different name/model; occasionally you can sneak in the back door that way! ;)

  • Coles may still have these nutech dvd players in clearance for $15. Says it is region 4 but plays all regions without tricks. Not the greatest hitech player but does its job.

    • I'm pretty sure they were still marked at $39 or $29 at my local coles =( Which coles had them for $15?

  • You will need a programmable remote control to reprogram your dvd player to be region free. You can't just use the machines own remote, or your tv remote. These remotes cost about $40, so can add substantially to the cost of your dvd player. Of you can just buy one & return it after using it to reprogram the dvd player. Dick Smith has a 10 day return for refund policy if you keep the receipt.

Worked for me. My Sony dvd player was region locked, & I unlocked it with this remote. Will now play all regions.

    • Oh wow, so much effort. Are you 100% sure the remote that comes with the dvd player wont work?

      • Alot of hassle I know. But I was stuck with a pile of imported dvds I'd collected over the years & a new Sony dvd player with HDMI upscaling that wouldn't play them. So I was determined to make it multi region.

With the same remote I also reprogrammed my old Samsung DVD/Video combo machine to be multi region. This was dead easy to reprogram. From memory I only entered a 4 digit code. The sony was alot more complicated.

In hindsight my advice is ask BEFORE you buy (my mistake). There are alot of multi region machines around. If you go to Bing Lee or similar & ask which machines are multi region they should be able to tell you. And read the box for confirmation. If it doesn't say 'multi region' on the box don't expect it to be.

No, what spacecowboy says is only true of some high end equipment. E.g. the PVR I once had required a special remote to unlock which could be rented, or so I gather from searching the web so I didn't bother. However most cheapo DVD players are unlocked or can be unlocked using their own remote.

If I was in your shoes I would try the link provided above by greenpossum.

  • Just get a cheap bluray player. They are all unlocked for DVDs.

  • i bought this 1 from oo.com.au plays them all no probs http://www.oo.com.au/neoniQ_DVD_Player_with_5_1_Cha_P42595.c…
