Fast Food Related Discounts Should Be Opt-in

Now I know this might not go well with some but I feel fast food related discounts should be an opt-in listing and should only be displayed for logged in users who have opted in.

Same concept as confectionery free isles. Some people have weight and control issues and promoting fast foods is detrimental to them and overall health and well-being of others.

Some people have weight and control issues and promoting fast foods is detrimental to them and overall health and well-being of others.

Just because they opted out of will power and personal responsibility does not mean others should have to cater for them.

Some people have weight and control issues

Maybe they should work on those self-control issues instead of burdening everyone else with them.

As talked about on the religious and adult deal posting restrictions.

If you don't like a deal, just ignore it and move on. No reason to berate people who do enjoy the deal.

That'll be on my tombstone one day.

        Press F to pay respects.

        fffffffff

Or block the store. I block many stores that sell things I'm uninterested in, KFC, McDonald's, a bunch of stores selling "protein powder", as well as every religious store.

So just block the stores you are not interested in and don't feel you need to push your agenda to us all.

"promoting fast foods is detrimental to them and overall health and well-being of others."

Better drive around with their eyes closed so, fast food advertising is everywhere.
People need to practice some self-control.

It's not that hard I guess. We gave up soft drink and junk food about 10 years ago. The appeal has definitely gone and if we do get offered the occasional glass of fizzy it tastes to sweet and sickly to me now that it doesn't get drunk. :)

  • and alcohol too?

What about people with compulsive shopping issues?!

      • +7

        you mean all of us.

        • +7

Haha precisely! I demand an OzB home page that's blank so I don't get tempted!

          • +3

@HighAndDry: I had a "piston engine" moment the other day. (Monty Python sketch, worth finding"). They had the Crocs at Costco for $4.97 and I just couldn't pass them up. These are now my outdoor shoes for taking the compost to the bin.

          • +8

@HighAndDry: We're working on a new feature, should be ready April 1.

  • +3

The site already has the feature requested. You can opt-in to deals by subscribing to notifications for any of the deal categories. One could just subscribe to everything except for the "Dining & Takeaway" category. Problem solved.

What is a confectionary free aisle? Don't you mean confectionary free checkout? That's just to help parents not deal with kids tantrums because kids have no self control, unlike adults who presumably browse ozbargain.

Personally, generally, the fast food deals put me off. All you need to do is think about greasy food pre-prepared in spitting distance of cock roaches, mould and rats. That's enough to make me seek calories else where.

  • +2

Ideas should only be put forward by people who understand the difference between aisles and isles. School first!

    • +4

Being stuck on a deserted island would be an effective, if extreme, dieting strategy. Just hope it's not a desserted one…

      • maybe we could get Man Friday to make us a Sundae.

    • An ocean of water or an ocean of products.

Since I've got a 'puter my spelling has gone downhill. If it wasn't for autocorrect I would, probably, be functionally illiterate by now.

What does Third Party status mean specifically in this thread?

    • +3

Op is asking for his friend, maybe.

    • +6

Neither a producer or a consumer of junk food. A busybody.

    • Clicked the wrong button. All fixed.

      • +1

OK, thanks :) Was tempted to report or TWAM, but preferred the possible drama >:D

  • +2

This thread represents the pathetic nature of today's society

    • -8

I disagree with the OP. But your comment represents the pathetic nature and endless ignorance of the wilfully stupid in today's society. Keep eating what the hateful scaremongering trolls are feeding you, sheep.

      • +1

So many big words, but no context for your references. Well done.

      • -2

But we did the same for smokes. Should they be advertised again (before you start in a comparison there are heaps of studies that substantiate the negative effect fast food has on health in general and how mass advertising creates this environment).

        • +1

Nicotine is physiologically addictive, and also bad for others. Welfare state aside, being fat only hurts the fat person and anyone who willingly interacts with them.

          • -3

@HighAndDry: So obesity has no impact on cost of healthcare and directly on tax payers?

            • +2

@kinghuzi: You can still eat fast food and be healthy as long as it fits your nutritional needs for the day and you portion control.

But you can't portion control out exercise the long term effects and chance of illness from cigarettes.

So I disagree your view that fast food deals should be opt in.

  • No, it just opens the door to a whole mess of changes which would have to be made to be fair to everyone who feels this way or other ways about various things. Basically an entire new system put in place where you choose exactly which categories you want to see bargains from. Sounds like a lot of work to implement with no benefits.

    • +2

I feel offended by the oxymoron of Apple bargains. Please protect me from the interwebs.

  • +1

Can’t think iof any confectionary free isles… Tasmania, Singspore, NZ and the UK all have it. Maybe King Island?

    • If you are going to pick people up on the spelling of 'aisle' you might want to learn how to spell 'confectionery'.

  • Personally I think the field has to be open with, perhaps, the ability to opt out for certain categories if they are triggers for some people, or they just aren’t interested. Not sure if this is already there or even feasible if not.

    • Not certain categories, but you can hide deal from specific stores and users.

      • +1

I don't think the people get tempted to eat fast foods when they really ought not to would be the type of person to take the effort to hide deals.

        • I don’t, necessarily, agree with that. I can be obsessed by things, e.g. some games, but if I stop playing after a while I just forget about them. However, I welcome you producing the research you have on how people who are tempted to eat fast food think.

  • +3

But I like seeing the KFC posts. Makes me think about fried chicken.

    • -2

Exactly, seeing KFC posts makes a person who is prone to eat fast food think about it compared to a healthier meal. I love the non-food related posts on ozb but I have no option not to see them if I want to access ozb.

      • You go to the deal and hide food and grocery tag.

      • +1

Oh no, you'll see them and think of junk food. The horror.

      • +1

I see KFC deals and I think of that delicious smell and the delicious taste and the not so delicious diarrhoea that follows and then I think about the confusion I get when I see corn in the bowl but I don’t remember eating corn and then I think about the fact that I’m a fat bastard who doesn’t eat kfc because I’m trying to lose weight and then I think about how this post is representative of the nanny state mentality that Australia currently has…

  • +5

Some people's avatar look like food or cheeseburgers, perhaps something should be done too? /s

  • Reading some of these posts makes me realise how big the problem of fast food is in Australia.
There is so much evidence that it is slowly killing those who consume it, yet there is so much money being made, that the big companies get away with it.

    • +1

It's not just Australia, it's every first world country. Same can be said for smoking, alcohol and drugs. What are the big companies supposed to do? Teach adults how to eat? Develop a show feed system for customers like farmers do with pigs?

    • +1

Everything is slowly killing you. If you ate fast food in moderation it'll do absolutely nothing to you. It's people's lack of self control that's killing them.

    • People who live long lives live the bulk of it in old age. I like the very old woman who died recently who said God punished her every day with a long life and she only enjoyed one day of it.

  • +1

Now I know this might not go well with almost everyone

    FTFY.
