Just Purchased a Dell Latitude 7480 for Light University Work and Need Advice on Upgrades

Just Purchased a Dell Latitude 7480
Comes with:
i7-7600U @ 2.80Ghz
8GB Ram
256gb Toshiba XG5 NVMe SSD
possibly (14-inch QHD (2560 x 1440 pixels)) Starting to question maybe I have a lower spec screen.

Got this used for $650 minus ebay discounts

Main reason is windows 10 pro (so i can install windows 7 on virtual PC, I hope) and also its a 14" that gets 10-14hrs battery life (Half way to europe) and seems to get good ratings.

I like my machines fast. Doing nothing to stressful, just some stats programs, research programs, word and games like sim city 2000 etc (GOG)

So far I have purchased a Crucial 16GB Single DDR4 2400 MT/s (PC4-19200) for $151 (6% cashback on top) and am now looking at the hard drive

Can anyone recommend a goddish hard drive.
It says a Crucial MX500 1TB 3D NAND M.2 Type 2280 Internal SSD fits, but does anyone recommend anything else.

Can people also recommend what to type when looking at different brand. I normally only deal with 2.5" SDDs. Do I type "NAND M.2"?

    Samsung 970 EVO 1TB

I just bought 7390 2 in 1 and upgraded to Samsung 970 EVO 1TB (not plus), cost $280 from ebay, its new and sealed.

You want to downgrade a NVMe SSD to a SATA SSD for a larger storage capacity? Are you certain that is what you want?

  • You'll barely notice much improvement by changing that SSD and RAM.

  • possibly (14-inch QHD (2560 x 1440 pixels)) Starting to question maybe I have a lower spec screen.

Right click on your desktop and go display properties. Under resolution, you should see one resolution that's "Recommended" or "Native Resolution". That's the resolution of your display.

    Crucial 16GB Single DDR4 2400 MT/s (PC4-19200)

Check your mainboard but you should have 2 RAM slots. Make sure you populate both slots (with identical RAM sticks) so that you've getting the advantage of DDR (the first D stands for "double") config. It's a marginal difference but there is a difference nonetheless. Never only use one stick if you can help it.

    256gb Toshiba XG5 NVMe SSD

This is already the fastest type of Storage you can get, there's no reason to swap this out unless you want more space. And in that case, make sure you get another NVMe M.2 SSD. (There are M.2 which are SATA that are (slightly) slower).
