Non Aussie deal - (or) why we sooo screwed in Aust

Anyone see the recent nonlisted deal of a 73" DLP 3d ready TV that wasn't for Australia? It's price was $1190!

How screwed are our prices in aust?!?!?!?

Could you imagine a 73" TV for under $3k? Let alone just over $1k!!

Hey Gerry Harvey - this is why no one will buy Aust anymore!!!!

Anyone have access to a shipping container? Wanna ship over a few $1k 73" TVs???

I think I read a while back on Whirlpool, Priceusa thread, that it is possible to ship a TV over although it costs something like $300 bucks? Additionally, you would need a stepdown transformer and a set top box as I believe the digital signals are different.

But yeah, perhaps someone needs to start some business that sells individual shipping containers, where we can pack a whole bunch of stuff in there. Even stuff like groceries would be cheaper albeit harder to get through customs.

Oh god, here we go. You know why Mitsubishi, Pioneer and Philips won't supply consumer electronics to Australia?
Because we screw retailers on price, driving the price down to unsustainable levels, and manufacturers pull out.

Having said that, yes, TV's are cheap in the states, but if you break your leg without health insurance you are done for. In Australia? The government will fix it for free.

Australia has a population of ~25 million whereas the US has a pop of 330 million. Spreading the distribution costs over 11 times more turnover makes TVs cheaper. When you think about it, TVs should be MORE EXPENSIVE over here!

And FYI: You can pick up a 60" LG plasma for less than $2k

I consider myself luck to live in this great nation and am willing to pay a little more for a big TV than be condemned to conditions like in the US.

    Stop whinging.

    Love Gerry

  • Dont forget the elephant in the room here is the fact that you are talking about a DLP TV, which are crap-loads cheaper than other technology, but don't get distributed down under. Apples for apples, after paying for shipping and warranty, TVs are approximately the same price here as in the US (which is very surprising!)

    • maybe DLP but if thats a DLP(3) fudge I WILL buy that!

      • Hey, I am all for $1500 72" 3D panels! :D All I am getting at is that it's a range of factors that make TVs over here (marginally) mnore expensive.

And if I keep hearing idiots blame "Gerry Harvey" for high prices, I might crack. (no offence)

    • You'd need a big room for a 73" DLP TV… not just wide and tall but also pretty deep..
This is effectively a projector in a box.. completely different and much cheaper tech than LCD or Plasma.

72" where the hell do you put it!! and to give our android fans (you know the ones that say in every post dont buy an iphone4 as an iphone5 is coming), why buy 72" when there's an 80" coming……

Maybe the reason these are not available here is the utes sold in Oz aren't big enough to take these home, or put another way is there a big enough market..

72" for less than the price of a baby bonus check? I can guarantee you there is a market! :P

      • Then again if we didn't have the baby bonus (tax raised to cover it) maybe we would have these cheaper TV's - and so the argument will go round and round

  • the main problem is alawys becos we have less ppl in this country hence harder to make money on volume with low margin. so we always gonna be screwed cause there's not enough demand (ppl power) but do u really need a 72", that must be a huge living room u have!

    • outdoor viewing at night!
Hell I would get one for that(damn the canberran weather though!)

    • its the same as the PHD syndrome where P stands for Pretty and H stands for Huge

The bigger the better(not always but most of the time)

I actually downgraded from a 52 inch TV(RPTV) to a 40 inch one because that was the optimum size for my room!
