Punching Bag / Boxing Equipment

Hey guys,

So i wanted to get a punching bag or one of the other boxing bag things (i don't know much about the equipment..) just to have in the backyard so i can do some fitness from time to time. I've considered joining the gym for their classes but at the moment it's not financially feasible so i'd rather go with buying some equipment to train myself at home - nothing serious, just want to move more and get fitter. I already play soccer regularly and i'm just trying to get fitter overall.

Having said that, the thought occurs to me that the cost of some of this equipment might well be equal to paying for classes at the gym, so i want the wise counsel of the ozbargain forums in:

  1. Any suggestions for where to buy/what to buy in terms of equipment at home
  2. And as a result of 1, i guess a comparison of whether it's better to do this at home than at a gym class (or more cost efficient).

Cheers

  • Any suggestions for where to buy/what to buy in terms of equipment at home

eBay —> Distance: Nearest First —> Auctions Only
    or Gumtree

i guess a comparison of whether it's better to do this at home than at a gym class (or more cost efficient).

    depends on the total cost

you can EASILY buy 2nd hand gym equipment for less than half price of the Original RRP(or what it could cost you @ Rebels/Amart)
also you have to factor in:
    * where to put it
    * cost of home gym VS cost of gym membership

    • cheers, definitely consider those points

  • Depending on where you live, your local PCYC might have boxing lessons on the cheap!

IMHO, it's always better to learn good technique first; then you can decide if it's something you're gonna be happy to pursue at home by yourself! ;)

    • i've had a look, costs something like 15$ per lesson and well…ideally i'd do it 2-3 times a week so the cost of that would pile up pretttty quickly and pretty high.

Trust me, a few $15 classes will save you a lot more than that in injuries thru poor punching technique, especially if you're using a heavy bag! ;)

  • Punching bag won't last long outside in the backyard. The sun and rain will destroy it!

    • i was thinking of getting those that attach to a stand - and i can remove it and bring it inside when i'm done after the workout ?

  • goin a gym. boxing equipment never get used as with gym equipment.

you have to be very motivated to workout at home. gyms are good because they provide the motivation for you: it costs money, and everyone around you is working out.

once you have some foundation, then i would move to the home gym. if you go straight to the home gym, it won't get used.

but back on topic, check out gumtree, i see lots of bags there for pretty cheap. also make sure you buy gloves with good wrist support, cos you can seriously hurt yourself when you start punching and you get tired, and thats when injuries happen.

    • i already work out at home. as i said, i play soccer in a club team so i have training once and a game once per week. on top of that, i ride my bike (alone as opposed to meeting with friends) and also go jogging (alone) 2-3 times a week. i just wanted to add an extra dimension to my workouts. i've had a look at gumtree and i found a punching bag for 150$ that's being sold kinda near me! that sounds like a fair price.

cheers for the advice on the gloves, do you have any examples (so i know what to look for) when buying gloves ? I'm thinking of getting those small MMA gloves as opposed to boxing gloves, what do you think ?

      • if you are boxing, then buy boxing gloves. i never tried any of the 'bag' gloves since i use my 16 oz ones for bag work. they offer more wrist support. mma gloves have less padding and support so they can be more easily maneuverable (sp?) since they are used for grappling and grabbing.

leather generally lasts longer than vinyl ones (but costs more).as far as gloves go I hear, you DO get what you pay for. more exp ones last longer. if you are just casually hitting the bag though, you prob don't need extremely high quality ones.

note: i'm just a beginner though, just do some occasional boxing work for krav maga. just some tips i got from my own research since im no expert myself. i was hunting for gloves not too long ago. i bought a nice set of 16oz leather gloves off ebay for $25 which had wraps as well :) pretty close to new so not complaining :D

        • For bag work I use good leather bag mitts; boxing gloves for sparring of course! I wouldn't bother with open finger MMA jobs for basic boxing training though ATM, until you decide you wanna take on GSP! :p

Big tip: Tape/wrap your hands/wrists, I can't stress this enough; and probably the first thing any good boxing/mma/kickboxing trainer will tell you is the same; and your joints will thank you for it!

Don't buy anything but leather, vinyl is useless IMHO, it's 'grabby' on the bags or pads & can lead to injury; as well as being nothing like as durable as leather. Leather gloves will outlast even the best vinyl 20:1 IME, so yes, buying synthetic is false economy! ;)

boxing is pretty boring when just doing bag work by yourself - shadow boxing is OK but bag work is a bit of a chore. Teaming up with someone on the pads is LOADS more interesting as you can work combos, defense, footwork and generally motivate each other, with the occaisonal spar to keep you inline (body sparring to start with). You can also feel yourself getting better and mastering combos and getting a vibe.

as mentioned, technique is key, so you will need some classes to get your entire body punching properly - it starts from the feet! I've got a 8am-4pm membership at Melbourne Martial Arts Academy for boxing/kickboxing/muay thai/MMA/Kettlebell etc and it only costs me $18 a week for unlimited classes - pretty damn good!

also, I like to fire up on JACK3D too, which can give you focus during your workouts :)

maybe have a look at something like P90X for something to keep you conditioned.

I buy my training stuff through boxing-fitness on ebay - I think he's a personal trainer who sells stuff on the side. been happy with several purchases.

  • How about going along the lines of something a bit more unconventional like a TRX suspension trainer? They don't take up much space and you can do over 1000 exercises on them and don't need to spend hours on them and you can take them anywhere and use them anywhere and they pack away in a small carry bag. They are great fun too. Always keeps it interesting!

If you are interested in one, let me know please.
