Phone Cases - Do They Protect The Camera?

I bought this product and I thought it would protect my phone, come to find out if I drop the phone the camera area is not protected. Are all phone cases of this type the same?

Yes … Even the tough case ones like Otterbox will have a cutout for the camera

I wouldn't really say the camera is "not protected" . It would have to fall and hit in some exceptional kind of scenario, to get into the cutout. Eg fall and hit onto a pavement and that pavement just happens to have the perfect sized rock, in just the right position, as to strike inside the little cutout during impact.
The cutout would be needed in order for camera to function properly. If the cutout wasn't there, I believe the extra covering over the lense (even though clear) would affect the camera shots.
If you are really worried about it, I would try a small piece of tempered glass screen protector, over the lense. Check photo shots before and after applying glass screen protector over lense (to see difference it makes to shots, if any).

  • I'm going to make a couple assumptions.

No, they're not all like that. Yes, they all have a cutout (else how would the camera be able to take a picture?). But some (many) are thick enough that a flat drop WOULD protect the camera, because the camera is now slightly (very slightly) recessed vs just sticking out begging to be banged up.

Virtually none will protect against a direct impact (i.e. it falls and hits a rock directly where the camera lens is). You can get a tempered glass protector, I personally don't believe those help much with direct impacts but it would help keep it from getting scratched. No promises that it won't affect your image quality (in fact I'm pretty sure it would, whether it's noticeable is a different question).

Edit: Darn kids needing stuff before school, guy above me got his answer in way before me.

and I thought it would protect my phone

First of all, you shouldn't expect a $1 piece of plastic (TPU) to protect much of anything. It'll still be better than no case at all.

Second, some cases come with a raised portion around the camera which gives the camera some protection if the phone is dropped, but almost all will have the cutout around the camera so as to not affect camera performance.

HighandDry has never used a TPU case and doesn't understand physics enough to workout that a TPU case offers better protection than a hard case without padding so he just assumed a case that costs one dollar isn't very good.

      He's incorrect again.

      • True. I have had these TPU cases, they take alot of impact. Kind of cushion/absorn the impact I guess.
Certainly don't need to spend big to get a good phone cover.
My bro bought the $100 lifeproof case, had to return 1st one to store, replaced under warranty. Second one then failed.
I've had cheap cases/covers last forever.

      • I can assure you that a $1 case "isn't very good". I'm not out here recommending $1 hard cases either.

      • It depends on the quality and structure of the TPU used for the case; it can have more elastic or more rigid properties depending on the manufacturing processes involved. Then consider that even if the material properties are identical, the case’s structure dictates most of the protection, e.g a flat, smooth case will not be as effective as one with some form of added material for improved deceleration on impact, such as ridges, bubble-like patterns, etc.

Not all TPU cases are equal, and I highly doubt a $1 one will be all that flash.

  • You can get glass screen protectors specifically for the camera on your phone.

However I would suggest springing for a quality case. I have always liked Spigen cases as they are very well designed, often they are the top pick on CNET, Wirecutter, etc lists. I have one of the hybrid cases so hard shell on the back and clear rubber around the edges which helps soften falls. The edges around the front and around the camera have a decent lip for added protection. I'm very fiddly so I drop my phone A LOT and I've never had any damage. Even if I polish up the camera I cant notice any scratches. The few people I know with cheap kmart cases are also the people I know with broken screens.

  • The cases that protect the camera protects the camera.

    The cases that don't won't.

  • Yes they do. I use Spigen cases. However no matter how good the case is it won't protect the screen, I've never dropped my phone, but I still have a crack on the bottom corner somehow, and my last phone had a shattered screen for the last few months I had it. That being said, I find it easier to use my S8 with a case rather than without, it's easier to feel where the fingerprint reader is on the back and with extra bumper around the curved edges of the screen my fingers aren't accidentally opening things just by holding it.

  • You can get a clear PET camera cover, like a screen protector but just for the lens.

  • yes i got a tempered glass cover for the camera area. Thanks for the replies

  • My one plus two was run over by a car which had a TPU case on it. The screen cracked but the camera worked fine
