BYO Jet - Is This Illegal?

So I booked 2 return flights on the recent Qantas/Swiss deal Melbourne to Amsterdam.

My circumstances have changed (a break up) and I'm now going on my own and understand my partners ticket will be non-refundable (I paid for the trip)

As a result I wanted to come back a little bit earlier

I sent an email asking to change the dates on both my outbound and return flights and was quoted approx $2660

So then I asked about changing the return flight only and was quote $4759!!

Here is the kicker though - the return flights I requested are the same!

How is it possible changing both the outbound and inbound flights could be cheaper than changing only the return flight when the return flight is exactly the same?

I hope this all makes sense but it honestly seems like they're making the prices up

Price fluctuation due to supply and demand. Maybe there's more demand on the new departure date?

You could be right. Easter Sunday

Yes, they are. It's also perfectly legal to.

Out of curiosity, why do you think this would be illegal?

You living under a rock? any changes that work against you is illegal ;)

Cause the OP doesn't want to pay more, so must be illegal :)

I dunno what's legally enforceable when your dealing with a middleman company that has virtually no presence in Australia.

    • BYOjet is owned by Flight Centre ?

    rrrrrrrrrrrrrriiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiippppppppppppp

  • Yeah there is talk of airlines being not allowed to charge that much but it hasn’t been implemented yet.

Have you got any friends you can go with instead ?

Now you can properly enjoy Amsterdam ;)

    • Yeah I do but nobody I know can get 5 weeks off with such short notice.

You’re right though about enjoying it far more though

Give a friend a free ticket from Aus to Amsterstam. Let them buy a one way ticket back?

        • I'm not sure how much they'll sting me for a name change, I'll look into it?

          • @saitken: Put it to your mates. Someone might be able to swing it. When are you going ?

Get them to cover a bit of accomm and beer (most importantly). Tell them “ticket is on me”

      • For five weeks I can be your friend.

  • Return flight might now only have a couple of seats left or even only premium economy. Class changes on tickets do add up.

  • Apparently they don't allow (they said the airlines don't allow) name changes - oh well

    • which airline?

    • Bull shit

Go to the airline directly. Course they do.

      • Qantas/Swiss. I called them who said everything needs to be done via the agent until the first leg of the trip is taken

Did the thought ever occur that maybe….just maybe that your return ticket set was a 'deal' and a one way booking is not part of a 'deal'?

One way being more expensive is common anyway, ensures seats are filled rather than airlines being at the whim of supply/demand on unpopular destinations that happen to cross popular hub stop overs.

  • Change flight dates and one person isn't even going to be on the flights!?

    You're going to get sued!

  • So whats the deal if I book a separate one way return airfare with another airline?

So basically I would take board the airfare from Melbourne to Amsterdam then take another flight home on another airline.

My ex would obviously be a no show for both flights and me on the return as well.

Will a get charged a fee for doing this?

Let me guess - I might get sued!?

    • if you fly with Lufthansa, you'll get sued.
