Is This a Good Value PC Upgrade?

I'm wanting to upgrade my PC and budget is $600-$700. Mainly used for gaming at 1920x1080.

My current PC is as follows:
CPU Intel Core i5 3570 @ 3.40GHz Ivy Bridge 22nm Technology
RAM 8.00GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 798MHz (9-9-9-24)
Motherboard ASRock B75 Pro3-M (CPUSocket)
Graphics 4095MB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960 (EVGA)
Storage 119GB M4-CT128M4SSD2 (SATA (SSD))
298GB Western Digital WDC WD3200JD-22KLB0 (SATA)
931GB Western Digital WDC WD1001FALS-00J7B1 (SATA)

I've been watching the Techfast deals recently and found this with 20% off bringing the price to about $640.

https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Intel-i3-8100-RX-570-4GB-120GB-S…

Could anyone please tell me:
1. Is this a good price for the specs?
2. Would it be a significant upgrade to what I already have?

Thanks for any help/advice.

    no, just upgrade the gpu

For 1080p a 1060 or a good rx580 is the go best bang for your buck. I agree with just upgrading gpu.

    What games?

Your processor is quite old but desktops aged a lot better than laptops recently.

I'd get more ram and upgrade the video card, depending on what games you want to play. DDR3 is too cheap not to get more.

    • Last few games I played were Subnautica, Far Cry Primal, Hellblade, Fallout 4.

It'd be mostly a side grade.

Right now, I'd recommend just upgrading your GPU. Go for a 2060 or vega 64 (if your psu can handle it)

*Ideally a 2060 (close to $600) and pick up some more/better ddr3 ram.

As most have said here, just upgrade your GPU - that's where most of your power is coming from nowadays.

If your budget is tight, you could grab a 2060 on sale and you'd be well on your way - and since it's a current gen card, easy enough to upgrade other bits of the PC down the track around the GPU.

I'd probably try find another cheap 8gb stick of RAM as well to finish it off.

  • Thanks for all the feedback. Seems like everyone thinks an upgrade would be the best option. Given an upgrade will essentially be postponing the next completely new PC purchase I'd like to spend as little as possible on RAM and GPU.

I've found I can get 2 identical sticks of RAM (identical to what I currently have) here: https://www.umart.com.au/Corsair-8GB--2x4GB--CML8GX3M2A1600C… for $92.

What is the best bang for buck graphics card going for around $250? Maybe I should wait for one to come up on OzBargain around that price point?

Thanks again - appreciate the help.

i won't spend that 100 on ram if you only got $250 left for gpu
better off spending all 350 on gpu, as 8gb ram is still fine.

wait for gtx 1660 vanilla should be $300+ launch in 2 weeks time

gtx 1660 Ti is $400+ launch in 3 days time

      • Yep, completely agree with phunkydude.

If $250 is the budget, bump it to $350 and disregard the memory upgrade.

And the 1660 suggestion is a good one for a bit of future proofing without smashing your wallet.
