People Keep Running Red Lights - Should I Report Them to Police?

Hi all,

I ride to work on a pushbike. Some mornings (I would estimate 1 in 10 rides) people run red lights at the pedestrian/bike crossings.

I ride with a GoPro on my helmet for my own safety (almost like a dashcam I guess) but this camera picks up these things happening.

The way I ride is I hit the button to cross and then I check (visually) that the cars have actually stopped. I don't cross until I am 100% sure that all the cars have stopped. So I'm not technically affected by these people running the lights, but it still bothers me.

On one hand, I'm tempted to give these videos to police for follow up. Then again, on the other, I think maybe that person was running late/had just woken up/any other excuse that might have caused them to run the red.

Examples of these events are here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VqF6bJcCzGw (note - this is old footage, someone else just ran the red this morning as well and that video isn't up yet).

Should I report them to police or just live and let live?

I can tell from the video you're living in Logan.
And I'm pretty sure you don't need me to repeat "Logan Bogan" for you..
Didn't expect much from Bogans living in Logan ._.

    • This is a pretty common theme weaved throughout the area, "bogans from logan" etc. However, you realise that people can drive their car from an area outside of the much chastised "logan bogan" region into the area shown? Or are you saying that once someone drives into logan they become worse drivers from the "logan bogan" effect?

  • You should dress up as a policeman and pull people over.

    Or just become a policeman.

    Or get a hobby… cycling?

    "logan bogan"

    heehehe.

    Snitches get stitches

    YES!

I watched your video. You crossed the road, then crossed back, then crossed again? Why? You held up traffic 2 times more than you needed to?
And I bet you wonder why everyone hates cyclists.

    • I crossed back the second time because I was experiencing what was happening in real-time. So I wondered if maybe the lights were out, if thats why people didn't stop? Due to this I tried to cross again at those lights to check if the crossing signals were operational.

I honestly thought it was more likely that the lights would be out, as opposed to those many people just failing to stop. If the lights were out I was going to report it to the main roads department to get it fixed.

People hate cyclists because they, unfortunately, get stuck behind them when they ride 2 abreast, or when theres just not enough room on the road to observe the 1.5 m passing rule. They also hate them because a lot of them are elitist jerks that try to run everyone else off the road.

Personally, I'm just some dude who was obese last year (140kg's) and am trying to get into a healthy BMI. These days I'm closer to 117kg and steadily still dropping. I'm aiming for 100kg.

I ride a really, really boring commuting bike thats not even carbon and its very slow compared to a race bike. It even has a rack. I'm not the kind of cyclist who flips everyone off and rides into crazy traffic, even when legal to do so. I do see this some mornings though, from other cyclists, which is a shame.

      • Good for you. Bike riding is a great way to get fit and lose weight. Keep it up. Just don't unnecessarily stop traffic in the process. People get road rage for almost no reason these days, I'd hate for you to be on the receiving end of someone's blind rage.

Also, if someone goes through a red but it doesn't actually put you in danger due to you being too far away from their car, does it really matter? From what I saw in the video, it wasn't that bad. Why make a big deal about it??

      @PleasureMe

      I read your comment….

You've got me thinking that perhaps before we start any future discussion regarding cyclists being licensed, a more pressing issue might be people being tested for minimum competency standards before they are allowed to comment on the internet.

Just an idea to kick around.

      • what are you on about?? I never said anything about cyclists being licensed. FYI, I don't agree with the idea that people who own bikes need to pay rego.

Maybe you should get your facts straight before you comment. I was asking a question about a video I watched, I wasn't trying to take a guess at what someone might say in the future that is actually completely wrong.

        • I never said anything about cyclists being licensed.

Yes you are correct and my apologies for the confusion, you have failed to see it was merely a device to introduce my broader point.
          .

…if someone goes through a red but it doesn't actually put you in danger due to you being too far away from their car, does it really matter?

Your additional comments above however, probably illustrate and reinforce the gist of what I was originally alluding to better than anything else I could add.

  • would be nice if the bikeway that goes under loganlea road actually went somewhere

Thats strange, I drive to work every day and i dont really see people driving through red lights often at all. I see push bike riders going through red lights a lot more often. Do you mean just when it goes from yellow to amber? or when it is clearly gone amber.

  • if police get time & date from camera + location from you then if there is a traffic camera in the area they can check against that footage
