Foxtel and Netflix sign new partnership.

Basically from later this year Foxtel and Netflix will produce new programming together and Foxtel IQ customers will be able to watch Netflix programming through the on demand section of the IQ box.

Screams of desperation to me…

Not really. It sounds like they are catering to people that want to access Netflix through their Foxtel box. Make it easier for people to enjoy all entertainment through your box and they are unlikely (well a little bit) to cancel because of frustration.

Although like Netflix has done in other countries with similar deals like this, they are the real winners here as they get to distribute some of Foxtel's locally produced content overseas in other jurisdictions that Foxtel don't syndicate to. So essentially Foxtel users get to use Netflix easier, and Netflix get more "original content" on the cheap. Win-win for them.

    • Sounds like a loss for Aussie Netflix customers who don't also have Foxtel though. All this will do for us is drive up piracy and VPN/Smart DNS use again, which wouldn't be necessary if Netflix produced the content on their own.

      • Sorry how does it cause an issue for Netflix users in Australia that don't have Foxtel?

If you want Foxtel content, you have to buy Foxtel.

Aussie Netflix users get the same deal overseas, take Star Trek Discovery as one example. In America it is distributed by CBS cable/online etc. But because we don't have that here, so we get in on Netflix which is great because otherwise it wouldn't be available in the region at all (unless Foxtel or Stan picked it up).

        • Sorry how does it cause an issue for Netflix users in Australia that don't have Foxtel?

New locally produced Netflix content won't be available on their own streaming platform in the country it's produced in because the company they're producing it in partnership with will have it exclusively on their platform instead.

If you want Foxtel content, you have to buy Foxtel.

Not arguing that at all. But this new content is also Netflix content yet I won't be able to watch it on Netflix unless I use a VPN.

Anything produced by Netflix in Australia is available on Australian Netflix. I can't think of one example where this is not the case. Remember that most of the time Netflix might be a buyer of produced content that is either backed by Foxtel/Stan ownership group etc. or already have content rights bought by these parties.

But this new content is also Netflix content yet I won't be able to watch it on Netflix unless I use a VPN.

No, this content is Foxtel produced and distributed, so they have rights in their own country to distribute it exclusively, and sell the rights to distribute it elsewhere in the world to Netflix. This is a fair arrangement.

            • @serpserpserp: I think you're missing my whole point of new vs existing content, apologies if I didn't make that clear enough above.

Anything produced by Netflix in Australia is available on Australian Netflix. I can't think of one example where this is not the case.

Yes, existing content produced by Netflix in Australia is available on Australian Netflix. If I'm reading the article correctly, new content produced by Netflix in partnership with Foxtel won't be, because it will be exclusively on Foxtel instead.

Again, existing Foxtel content produced solely by them, yeah that makes complete sense to have it exclusive to Foxtel here and sell the distribution rights for other countries to Netflix. My issue is new content that Netflix and Foxtel are producing together will be exclusively on Foxtel her.

Could be that I'm reading it wrong and this new content they produce together will be distributed in Australia on both platforms after all. If that's the case then apologies and ignore my entire argument. But IMO it doesn't make sense as a business move for Foxtel to help produce new content that isn't exclusive to their platform in the one country they offer their service in.

Can't see that written anywhere in the article linked by OP.

Can't even see it written in the article that they are planning to produce anything together.

                • @serpserpserp:

Can't even see it written in the article that they are planning to produce anything together.

Very first sentence: "Entertainment giants Foxtel and Netflix will co-produce an Australian TV show for the first time"

But apologies, the exclusivity thing isn't mentioned in that article, it's in this one I should have linked earlier:

It's likely (but not confirmed) that Foxtel will get exclusive streaming rights for the new original content in Australia while Netflix would get to deliver it globally.

So not for certain yet, but hopefully it won't be the case.

    • Like Fetchtv

  • Desperation for who ? It sounds like partnership benefiting both sides

Foxtel exclusives now finding a way onto netflix world wide excluding oz while foxtel users get netflix

Foxtel still keeps its exclusivity to stuff such as GOT and Australian shows in Australia

    • The deal wouldn’t have happened if Foxtel wasn’t loosing customers hand over fist…. that’s why it screams of desperation.

      • +1

As a business, what would you propose they do instead?

This seems like a smart move, if they are losing customers to Netflix. Maybe the less desperate move would be to continue to lose customers until the business collapses?

As a business, what would you propose they do instead?

Perhaps Foxtel should look at their business and pricing models vs those of the other companies who charge a fraction of their monthly fee?

How many families can afford $100/month to pay for TV shows and movies that they probably don't have much time sit down and enjoy? Netflix and Stan etc have much much more reasonable pricing. A regular Joe who has no particular preference on what they're watching will obviously go with companies like Netflix and Stan simply because of the price differences.

          • @bobbified:

A regular Joe who has no particular preference on what they're watching

You just made up that there's this large group of people that don't care what they watch.

          • @bobbified: Or, could say that a regular Joel who has no particular preference on what they're watching will obviously go with companies like Foxtel simply because of the programmatic schedule.

            :O

          • @bobbified: I think you need to check what Foxtel actually charge now. It is less than $100 a month unless you have all the bells and whistles.

You have to remember that Foxtel have infrastructure that they pay for, Netflix/Stan don't have that. Plus the actually have a strong catalogue of content that does cost them money, and they probably pay a premium for that given the competition in this country now. Plus I am sure that the other non-sports packages actually subsidize the cost of the sports rights that Foxtel purchase.

If you want a comparable service to Foxtel, you'd have to subscribe to Netflix/Stan/Kayo at a minimum and you still wouldn't cover the content provided by the highest tier Foxtel, plus this negates the 4k stuff that they are delivering which doesn't require a top tier internet connection. I have a family member that doesn't have broadband (uses 4G for internet) and wants 4k content delivered to them, they pay about ~$60 a month I think for Foxtel. Sounds expensive, but if you add up the cost of 4k accounts for Netflix/Stan/Kayo and a 100/40 (or 50/20 connection if you want to rough it) it would be way more expensive to do this.

I think Foxtel are now taking steps in the right direction, it isn't easy to transition from a cable company to just being another Netflix/Kayo hybrid. Remember that there are people out there that still want cable/satellite TV that isn't delivered via the internet if they can avoid it so there is a user base.

It is kind of like Netflix when it started out as a mail deliver DVD service, they have evolved over 20+ years (maybe 25 now) to become what they are now, and even though it is easy to say that a DVD service mail delivery service is redundant and pointless, Netflix STILL haven't closed that business down and it still makes money for them even though there is a dwindling userbase.

Not a Foxtel user or fanboy, but I understand its place in the media landscape. But they do have their work cut out for themselves!

        • They are losing customers at an extortionate rate to the new sport streaming company

      • Disney+ and therefore Hulu's enviable arrival into aus this year also means netflix is getting a bit desperate - which is why they would make a deal with foxtel

  • If this means that stuff that was exclusive to Netflix (not their Original stuff) starts becoming Foxtel subscribers only, I will have to cancel my subscription.

I'll keep Stand and Prime Video and for the rest, piracy.

    • this happens and it would be suicide for Netflix in Australia.

    • Or just use a VPN

  • Does this mean Foxtel users have Netflix shows ruined by advertising? I mean we already know there are derps out there paying to watch advertising, they're existing Foxtel customers.

    • That's another reason we cancelled Foxsmell was the adverts

If i pay for something I don't want adverts (I can get them for free on FTA Television

I cant find a decent thing to watch on Netflix nowdays.
All the new shows are all transexual, homosexual, empowered women story lines. and the shows are rubbish.

I've started to watch Amazon prime, which seems to have better shows now.

    • I find them both rubbish.

    • We also have amazon Prime

I got it for the free deliverys and the wife as she watches a few shows on there

I will watch Good Omens on there when it gets released in May

  • Hmm… but Optus have a native Netflix app on their Fetch box already?

So, sounds like Foxtel are trying to play catch-up a little.

  • Hope they get the Netflix app on Foxtel Now box

  • My TVs can watch Netflix (and Stan, Prime Vid and others) without the need for Foxtel. I would probably need to update my Foxtel box to IQ4 and that would cost a year or two of Netflix payments to do that. I'm sure that Fox would find a way to insert a pile of adverts into the deal plus a 12 month lock in. Life gets complicated with bundling if you want to cancel one of the bundled services. The only reason we still have Fox is that the missus likes certain of their shows. Otherwise not worth paying the $80+ for infestations of ads.

  • First they completely wrecked the internet infrastructure in Australia and now they're hitchhiking their way with the thing they were terrified of the most…

I don't care less as we ditched foxtel about 6 years ago and netflix about a year ago

Spent more time looking for something to watch on both than watching anything

I downloaded game of thrones and I bought it when the seasons where released on Blu ray

I have also downloaded other shows that are only on foxtel (like wentworth for the wife which i also purchased when they were released on Blu ray)

Foxtel $39 a month - after reading your posts, I would like to say thankyou for the information. I rang with the intent to cancel Foxtel as I was paying $58 for an old box, entertainment, sport and HD. I mentioned that I was aware others were receiving free TV’s $39 deals. I stated that I could get Kayo and Stan for $38. I was firm in cancelling and she offered me- Entertainment, SPort HD IQ4 abd free installation for this Saturday. So just passing this on on case it can help someone else.
