Canada-US Visa for Border Crossing on Ground

I'd like some confirmation whether an eTA (electronic travel authority) is required for an Australian passport holder entering into US from Canada. The entry point is the bridge that connects the two countries at Niagara Falls. According to Maid Of The Mist it says citizens from some countries may need a Visa. The Learn More link takes you to the US Customs & Border Protection which doesn't mention specifics.

  • You need an ESTA to enter the US even though Australia is on the visa waiver program. I don't think there is anything else, although when I crossed in 2013 between Vancouver and Seattle I had to pay an additional $6 for some bs.

I've been on this bridge and there is some BS charge. Check you have the right amount of cash in the right currency.

Get both the US and Canada ETA's
I went fron NYC > Niagara (Canada side) in December and it worked out fine.
Canada side is sooo much better and you can go for a swim as well if you are up for some frozen rapids :P

If you’re starting on the Canadian side and just want to cross over to look at the falls from the US side, I wouldn’t bother. Just stay on the Canadian side and enjoy. It’s much better over there.

If you are crossing the border and continuing on in the US, then you need an esta.

If you’re just doing the boat tour and starting from the Canadian side, it’s now called Hornblower in Canada. It’s the same tour. You won’t need to cross the border.

  • As above, you need ESTA to enter the USA.
If you only want to go to the USA for a short period of time OR to visit Buffalo I wouldnt bother as Niagara, NY & Buffalo, NY are both fairly trash places haha
