Anything less than $10/kg is a bargain.

Amul Ghee price is hovering between $9 - $9.50 since Diwali.

  • That's…a lot of clarified butter.

  • Costco had the 1L nz orhanic Ghee for 12

G is next to H on the keyboard. Typo accepted

I bought from Costco thinking it would taste similar or better than butter but I was wrong. Why went for extra processing for an inferior product? Have I missed out something?

its for different purposes. ghee is clarified butter meaning the milk solids are taken out. this gives it a very high smoke point and wont burn in the way that normal butter would and is richer in taste and lactose free .
but i wouldnt spread ghee on bread for instance (but thats just me!)

      • +1

That's a very clear explanation. Thank you.

      • -4

        richer in taste

        fat is tasteless

      • My grandma used to use it to toast bread - definitely made it a richer eating experience… highly recommended to use on rotis and dosas!

    • +4

Yep, Lactose free and Crucially for some, it's also Casein free.
Casein is a protein that many people do not tolerate, especially people who cannot tolerate gluten. That is because gluten and casein have a similar molecular structure.
Casein is also to be avoided by those with any autoimmune diseases

      • Interesting, maybe I'll try a drop or two someday (I'm dairy and wheat free - not sure what part of dairy causes me issues)

Maybe the bit about you not being a calf.

  • Great for the arteries.

      Better than sugar and carbs

    • Funny that being from India on the tub it talks about how one teaspoon a day is great for energy lol

      • +5

well, fat is extremely good for energy since its so calorie dense :D

I'm going to get smashed for this but I'm just using olive oil in my curries now. I can't tell the difference!

A true Indian knows ghee is not just used for cooking.
You got a cut.. put some ghee on it.
You get burnt… Put some ghee in it.
You get sick.. mix some ghee with brandy and honey and drink it.
Sore stomach?.. rub ghee on it
You sweat too much… Rub some ghee in your armpits
Not performing in the bedroom?… Rub some ghee on it..

      • +9

ghee wizz, that's a lot of uses

      • +1

        What about flatulence?

        • +1

Thumb, ghee, you can figure out the rest….

          • @rodericb: So I such my thumb like a baby?

            • @ihbh: Yes but with one important difference…

      • -2

Sore stomach?.. rub ghee on it

I don't think I can reach my stomach through any of my holes

      • Can you use ghee as lube as well? KY gheely

      • +3

Use Ghee instead of lip balm

      • Girl not wet enough? Ghee her up.

      • Can it help with body odour?

        • Probably helps accentuate it.

      • Reminds me of this song.

Did that for yanks, until someone mentioned (and I’m yet to research and validate this) that olive oil is very good when consumed raw or lightly cooked (e.g. in salads or stir fries) but may not be as good for health when cooked/over cooked over a longer period (e.g. curries)

      • +1

Have heard exactly the same thing. Don’t know if it’s a myth or not.

        • Its true, Olive oil has low smoke point, basically its not for deep frying. Ghee has one of the highest smoke points in cooking oils. It has been used for many centuries in Ayurveda

    • I've got a sensitive palate and I find olive oil makes everything taste like an Italian salad, including curries. But I think if I tolerated it, over time it would become the new normal.

It will hover around at same price as Woolworths couldn't move ordered quantity & importer stuck with the excess stock. Local indian wholesale price in india is around $8.50-$9 so you can imagine how much money imported would be loosing after importing & delivering to woolies.

    • Does it mean that Woolies won't keep it after this stock is over (like Haldiram's frozen Samosas which had 50% off and then never got restocked)? If so, that's not a great news.

  • Great price, but nothing at a couple of my local stores on gold coast.

Not even appearing online, what's with that woolies?

    • +1

Specialty products. Only stocked in certain stores where there is sufficient demand.

      • It's more about demographics, and makes sense as well. Wouldn't make sense if they stocked this in the central coast for example, it'll be sitting on shelves for a long time.

  • This ghee is not the best for flavour and perhaps not have the medicinal properties as well. For that you need Cow ghee.

  • +2

We go for Al Aseel Ghee from local shops and find it much better than this.

It's easy to make ghee using unsalter butter at home - as pure as it can get. You can YouTube the method. Super easy.

    • Wasn’t aware of that- will be checking out on YouTube. Thanks for the tip!

      • Basically simmer butter on low heat until the milk solid separate from the fat and brown, pour everything through a strainer or two and the liquid you have after straining is clarified butter.
