Looking for a New Desktop - Budget around $1.8k

First time buying gaming desktop PC, sick of buying cheap outdated desktops that lasts 3 years.

Casual gamer

Whats the best store (and reliable) to buy from or pay someone to build? (no idea how to build)

Did some research, looking for specs like this
CPU: Intel Core i5-8400
Memory : 16GB
SSD: 240 or 480 GB
Graphics : Nvdia 2060 or 1070
HDD: 2TB
Power Supply 500W - 650W

Something like this https://www.msy.com.au/viconline/mspec-gaming-pc/22403-mspec…,
Buy definitely need 16GB Mem

Any suggestions or recommendations (or how to get a good bargain)?

    • Oh wow thanks! Im guessing id have to build it myself

      • It's very easy to build yourself although it seems very daunting if you haven't done it before.

There are many guides from start to finish such as https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/how-to-build-a-pc,5867.… and it's difficult to screw up.

If you ever get stuck on a particular step search youtube for exactly what you are stuck on and people will show you how to do it.

Once you've done one you'll see how easy it is and you can now upgrade parts when you like.

        • Oh great! I might have a think about it. Need to add in shipping costs as well ( as its from different sites)

@meatstriker: Mwave's your best bet site wise. Shipping seems to be nice, and prices are pretty good.

I'll leave my own of part picker list here if you want to use these specs. Can buy all of it on Mwave for virtually identical price.

Slightly over your budget, if you wanted to bring it under pick up an RTX 2060 (make sure it's a dual or tri fan card)

*Adjust the build a bit to suit your needs.

            • @N1NJ4W4RR10R: awesome post dude

for these specs, i am sure it would be awesome enough for serious video editing?

            • @N1NJ4W4RR10R: Thanks for the recommendation. Didnt know price includes shipping, thats good

              • @meatstriker: Not totally sure if it does on most sites, but I also live in rural NSW.

Mwave at least allows Aus post shipping… something like under 23kg is free?

Anyway, just make sure you double check for shipping.

About $1800 with the 10% off discount and more than what you asked for in every way basically. Can add in a hard drive pretty easily.

    • Thanks for the info, wasnt too sure if buying off ebay was the best idea tbh

      • I mean you can buy it off their website, it's an actual computer store in Adelaide, it's just cheaper with the ebay code.

I would go the ebay route if you are not too fussed on getting cheap or not the highest quality parts but honestly as long as they do x y z it should be just as good.

Gumtree has the potential best but it is only for people with time and knowledge on how to check for the best deals and test systems and deal with swindlers etc yada yada remember some people are trying to swindle you but you do get some upstanding citizens.

Only thing with going pre built is having to maybe buy extra stuff after as the upgrades are usually where they make their profits.

But there have been some great pre built options definitely for peace of mind.

Just chuck in a large ssd and hdd and maybe a network card and you should be good to go.

Unfortunately automatic tagging is not active yet on this website so you will have to browse multiple product tagging until an automatic and systematic full proof product tagging system is up and running for product tagging that will definitely assist with looking for the best deals in your desired category.

  • Should've gone with this deal from a few days back: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/436344

$1599 gives you great specs + a monitor as well. With the extra $200 you could easily upgrade the storage (seen a fair few SSD deals on here).

Also you mention being a casual gamer, and as such could've easily sold the RTX 2080 for $900+ and used that money to buy a cheaper gpu (eg. GTX 1060) and just simply keep the extra money.

    • Yeah that sounds good, wonder how often that happens. My old desktop broke down the day after that sadly

I'd advise buying AMD when you're looking at the low end. 580 > 1060…just make sure you get the 8gb version.

*Although I'd also check benchmarks on the games you play to know whether it has a heavy Nvidia bias.

PC Case Gear have customisable systems here - so you can choose one with the CPU/RAM/GPU/Storage that fits your requirements.

What you're after comes in at $1620 with this bundle https://www.pccasegear.com/bundle/223

    Graphics : Nvdia 2060 or 1070

The 1070 will last less than three years. I'd upgrade it at that budget to a 1080 or 2070.

You can pickup a GTX 1080 for about $650 if there's a good sale on where theres stock.

    • I'd go for a vega 64. Cheaper then a 2070 new.

If you can find a decent second hand 1080 or a good model 64 you're set.

2070 is pretty awful value, if you're set on an RTX card go for a 2060.

subtract around $100-$200 as there are cheaper options at places like msy etc ($699 for the etc 2070)

  • Depends where you live I haven’t followed the thread fully and pcpart picker is a great tool to use. There are a lot of local stores that have comparable prices you can just pick up the parts from. Ple computers Umart, May, pc case gear, futu etc. all come down to where you live. If you are not confident to build yourself I’m sure you could con a local member into helping you out. I know I’m in Brisbane and could probably find time if you are local.
