Xiaomi Vacuum - Low Suction Issue Resolved

I thought I'd share my experiences diagnosing an issue with my Xiaomi Vacuum, for someone maybe with the same issue Googling around for a solution, it was a pain in the ass but hopefully my experiences can help someone out there.

It just had a low suction problem. It would just roll over easily vacuum-able things, the carpet was still 95% messy after a job.. it would suck up something and then drop it later. The dustbin would be mostly empty after a job. Vacuum would be set to full power.

First thing I did was empty the bin and clean the filter - didn't help. I replaced the filter altogether but that didn't help either.

I removed the hair from the main brush and the hair that had spindled around the edges. Cleaned the dust from the bristles but… no help.

I figured there must be something caught in the pipe to the motor. I turned it upside down and listened for rattling but nothing. Besides the motor sounded completely fine when running. Didn't sound like it was dying - was running full speed and sounded healthy.

Battery was full. Dustbin wasn't broken or cracked. It seriously seemed like everything was fine, just decided not to suck things up.

Now call me dumb but I really didn't realize how big a role the main brush played in vacuuming. The role is actually huge.

I decided to change the main brush with my older main brush to see if it would do anything and immediately I knew what the issue was. You know how one end of the brush is square and you insert it in the groove on one side, but the other side just drops in? The nub on this side is supposed to spin freely on the brush - I compared the spinning on my old brush to the new and realized the new brush's nub had seized up.

After putting in the older brush with the free spinning nub the vacuum cleaner worked perfectly, just like new.

Not sure how I'm going to fix the newer brush but there you have it - if that little nub isn't spinning, your vacuum cleaner is almost 95% useless.

That's all :)

Edit: Tldr: if the spinny thing on the main brush doesnt spin the vacuum won't vacuum.

Universal application - When the thing don't do the thing, the thing don't work so good.

  • I've got a VAX Zen (Powerhead) model (mains powered). Some friends stayed at our house whilst we were away for a few weeks, when I came home I noticed that the vacuum head was completely clogged up with lint and dust. They hadn't realised they needed to switch on the powerhead separately. No spin no win.

By the way, the Vax Zen is no good at all in warmer climates. The auto shut off shuts it down for half an hour or so every time it gets warm.
