If anyone wants some background on these, have a look in the audioscience thread (https://www.audiosciencereview.com/forum/index.php?threads/r…)

I've had one since mid-late November 2018, I paid about $250 from aliexpress, so $300 with local warranty is pretty good value. That D50 is also pretty good value - it usually sells for $250USD (about $350 AUD on aliexpress).

    Pros:
    * For headphones that need amplification, it provides nice, clean power. e.g. I use mine with Hifiman HE4XX from massdrop, which were "good, but not amazing" without an amp, but amazeballs with one. I was previously of the opinion that motherboard audio is more than good enough (and it is for most headphones).

    However …

    Cons:
    * Some people (myself included) experience random power outage - i.e. the unit turns itself off, sometimes whilst playing. Happens about once every week or two for me, so not worth sending back to china for that. Some people think its PSU related, so if HifiGearOnline is shipping with an australian power supply (it needs 15V 1A), it may not be an issue.
    * Some people in that audioscience thread have experienced sudden death of the unit, usually preceded by the unit suddenly turning itself off, then never turning on again.
    * This is a minor niggle, and probably driver related - if I play non-44.1 tracks on it using foobar in exclusive mode, then I have to select a 44.1 song to reset it to get any sound from windows/games. I fixed this by just dual feeding it - USB for "critical" listening, s/pdif for windows gaming, and just switching between the two. I'm running the latest firmware and drivers.

If it wasn't for the random power off and/or sudden deaths that people are experiencing, it'd be a sweet little device. But, with the reliability problems, I don't think I'd recommend one. The D50 or Khadas Toneboard plus a JDS Atom is a good alternative setup (but costs more).

Still, with the local warranty, you're pretty well covered if it does die.

I’ve just been informed that Topping are looking into the issues of the DX3 Pro and until they’re sorted they’ve halted production and asked me to suspend sales until the issues are solved. While this is pretty annoying, at least it's good to know Topping are listening to the concerns of users and working on solving them.

In the meantime I agree with you, the D50 represents better value, and can be the start of a great setup with either a headphone amp (such as SMSL SAp-9) or a speaker amp.

  • Massdrop currently has these for $178USD including shipping to Australia (comes to about $254AUD) - 4 days remaining
