Know of a better price at the moment?

      DotComDotAu

    • Hahah made me laugh… you +ved so guessing you're not actually having a go

  • Thanks OP two of those were on my Amazon shopping list, which I only checked this morning.

  • Amazon… Why not E27 colour sale?!

    • +1

      Why not ambiance GU10!

  • -2

Geez, so many lightbulb bargains. I had to make my choice, and I made my choice yesterday. I went off to Kmart and bought 4 Mirabella Genios and ordered an Amazon Echo. Decision made.

  • Thanks, got two Lightstrips from Bunnings as of the price match guarantee (minus 10%)

  • +1

Nice one! Picked up a tonne

  • +1

    No B28? Pass.

  • Why did you leave out the White and Colour Ambiance B22 at $54.90?
That lightstrip pricing is good - only $1 more than previous low

    • It probably slipped by since the Colour E27 wasn't discounted.

Hue White and Colour B22 - $54.90. Almost 40% off the (outrageous) $89 RRP.

Bought two colour and two white. Resisted lightstrip temptation.

If you're not a Prime member, make sure to check your local Bunnings since they'll be price-matching tomorrow. Officeworks and JB too, probably.

  • Are these better than lifx?

    • Different - they don't use wifi so able to control more of them without degradation, faster response esp with multiples, easier to set up with physical hue switches. Otherwise no idea.

    • I have found lifx pretty unreliable. Haven’t tried hue.

      • Have the TP Link ones (got for $18) Which I have found to be easy to use and setup and would like to try the Philips for comparison.

      • +2

Hue is very stable - it's the hub that does the trick. You can turn 50 lights on and off simultaneously. It doesn't require internet and you don't need your smartphone to control them but you can if you want to. I have the dimmer switches and they work quite well - there are times when the dimmers lose sync but that's not too frequent and work quite well with the amount of lights we have.

        • Internet connection is required for programmed routines.

          • @ca6leguy: I think you can use the Apple TV too, and presumably something else if you’re in the Android universe (to do routines, whether there is Internet available or not).

Of course, you’ll need the web to download all the firmware updates.

House full of Hue globes here and no significant issue. One out of a dozen needed to be factory reset as wouldn't detect when plugged in, then fine.

I bought 2x Lifx to have a test/comparison. One of the two would randomly turn itself back on through the night. Look it up dozens of people same issues, no fix. I won't buy again.

      • I have read the same, that Hue is the most reliable. Even then, we get the odd weird thing happening, but overall, they’re pretty solid.

      • I have two lifx bulbs as part of the google mini free lifx bulbs deal. I use them for the toilets and mi motion sensor so when kids walk in they turn on. Also hooked up to nest protect to alert.

Havent see them turn on randomly yet tho.

      • Yeah can confirm. I've got four LIFXs and they take a second or so to turn on, but Hues will just switch with smaller delay.

    • Zigbee vs wifi

Lifx is brighter but i think it uses more power then Hue since its always gotta stay connected to wifi

    • Depends what you're after. If you only want one or two, and are okay to change settings from your phone or smart speaker, Lifx is better. They're a bit brighter and don't require a hub. However, the Philips Hue system is a bit better overall if you're planning on putting a few up. The hub takes the load away from the router and allows them to act as a mesh network, and there are a range of accessories to give you physical controls (motion sensors, smart switches, etc).

You can also control how they respond to the physical power turning off and back on. For example, by default it's set that turning it off at the wall and back on will have it behave as a normal bulb, reserving smart features for manual control. This would also mean that if your power at home is unstable, they will randomly turn on when it happens, even at night while you're asleep. You can change these settings to have it stay off, start on a set mode, etc.

  • How do these compare to the Xiaomi Yeelight bulbs? Significantly or slightly better?

    • +2

See above lifx replies - but it really depends what features you're looking for. Each type has it's pros and cons. For me the Hue bulbs are excellent. Being able to turn on 8 bulbs in one room simultaneously and set them to any colour is amazing. Turn off 50 with one physical switch. If you only need a few smart bulbs then I don't believe there's much of a difference.

      • Thanks for the explanation. I use downlights in the living area so only use these smart bulbs in individual rooms with one bulb each so might stick to Xiaomi for now. Interesting to note performance wise, there isn't much of a difference.

    • +1

I have since replaced mostly all my yeelights with Hue.

To be honest wont go back to yeelight for bulbs. I've had too many issues in having to reconnect lights to the yeelight app. Hue just connects no issues, and stays connected

I still have yeelight lightstrips and bedside lamps. The lightstrips can sometimes have same issue of having to reconnect but they dont get turned off that much by power like the bubls

      Also Hue/lifx colors are richer

    • Another reason i moved away from Yeelight was Nest Protect connects to Hue and Lifx, so when smoke alarm goes off the lights in the house will turn on and flash red to alert you as well.

Hopefully never need this, and this isnt some custom code from HASS, its part of the nest eco system.

    • Go and watch Linus tech tips and he actually did his whole house with xiaomi over lifx and Phillips hue so they can't be that bad. He chose them over all else in his review.

  • Do I need the bridge? as I just want to buy two bulbs for testing v my TP Link ones. Thanks.

    • Yes.

Or a Nest / Samsung smartthings.

I have a smartthings hub v2 and they connect fine. But you still need a bridge to utilise the hue software as they are not seen by the hue software when connected in this fashion.

  • Thanks op…have a couple more dimmer switches on the way now. Was going to pick them up at Bunnings last week, but there was a big queue - glad I didn't!

Very tempted on the LED strip too, but maybe next time.

  • Thanks op! Price beat at Bunnings.

  • Thanks, yeah price beat at Bunnings :D

Also the Dimmer Switch is on sale for $23.90 (Prime)

I picked up a motion sensor for my office Hue lights and light strip, 2x of the White E27 bulbs for my son's bedroom, 2x white ambience for mine and my wife's bed lamps, and 2x dimmer switches (1 for my son's bedroom, and 1 for the kitchen/dining room).

So these plus the two Colour kits (so 6x colour ambience bulbs) and hue light strip which I've bought from previous Amazon sales, I'll now be able to do every room except the Laundry, Bathroom and Lounge room. I don't care about the laundry or bathroom yet, but the lounge room has 4x downlights so I don't really feel like spending $200+ just for the one room. And we are only renting so can't change them to more sensible lights haha.

One thing I wish was easily do-able was to be able to turn on colour cycling for the hue strip. I use Homekit/Siri to turn them on and off. I know there are apps that can do it, but from my experience they had to be running the whole time and if you killed the app it stopped the cycle. It appears the apps just constantly talk to the light and tell it what colour to be rather than being a built-in feature of the lights themselves.

    • I probably should eventually grab another couple of the standard white bulbs one each for the bathroom and laundry and put a sensor in each spot. Not this round though, sensors are still fairly expensive to buy that many this time… :)

      • Got batten lights in our kitchen and laundry…otherwise would love to have Hue bulbs.

        • Easily swappable to downlights…

  • Price beat two bulbs with a little resistance at Bunnings, better get in quick before head office realises.

    • So did I…. hue color and white bayonet for $49.41 each with the 10% price beat.

  • Just wondering when is the Philips Hue Play available in Australia?

  • Thanks OP. Picked up the dimmer switch for $23.90 delivered with Prime (for comparison, it's currently $35 at JB & $28.90 at Bunnings). Good price.

    • Could have price matched and beat by 10% at Bunnings ;-)

      • Travel costs? :)

        • Instant gratification?

    • Damn, dimmer price went back up

      • Yeah noticed that this morning. Was going to potentially grab another one. Ideally I'd like the 3 button switch so that I could put it in our bedroom so we can easily turn the bed lamps on and off independently. I currently use the Home app on my iPhone but to make it more wife friendly a physical switch would be good…
