Plug in your location and it will show you businesses that have Foursquare deals set up.

Some notable ones from the Melbourne CBD:

  • Grill'd Melbourne Central, for every 3rd check in you will receive a free mini chips with your burger purchase. Remember, our reigning Mayor gets 1 free burger per day.

  • Oporto Free upsize chips & drink with any single or double fillet meal deal purchase for every 5th checkin.

  • Red Spice Road You're officially a regular…. Have a drink up to $10 on us! (Show to your barman)

And so on. Pretty easy way to score a discount.

On a sidenote, I used Facebook checkin at a pub the other day. It showed me a few people who were checked in. I clicked on one of the profiles and it revealed a woman's picture, hobbies, favourite movies and relationship status: single. Moral of the story is not only can you save money using checkin but you can potentially be more well prepared to woo a woman/man.

    deals look really cool! but some questions:

    how do you use this? is there an app to download? is there one for android?
    how does it keep track of where you've been and how often?

    Foursquare is widely popular mobile checkin service which runs on pretty much any phone including the Android. I have a Nokia and it actually has a couple of apps for Symbian. You open the app when you are in the location and it gives you a choice of nearby things to checkin to (businesses, parks etc.). You then click to checkin. Foursquare can then hook into your Facebook or Twitter account and post your checkins there. You can check your history of checkins on Foursquare's website.

    Yes foursquare can help you pick up chicks AND get bargains but…
    given all the potential privacy issues, it can be used to stalk people and/or capture personal information.

    Not only that but I remember seeing an app that actually calculated the male:female ratio in a check in place hence allowing predators to take advantage of such situations

      hmmm, free burgers and upsizes vs them knowing im a guy who likes beef over chicken. think i'll take the gamble XD or is there something very serious that would cause me to reconsider? i dont bank or pay using my phone? and my facebook doesn't contain much of anything really thats important (to me, thats why its on facebook!)

    Yes, there are ways you can cheat the system but you may be banned from the service or not receive badges if you do.

    Privacy is about control of your information. People shouldn't be discouraged from using social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter, Foursquare, Google Latitude etc but they should be wary of what they are doing.

    E.G. Only "friend" people I know on Facebook. Lock down your profile so when someone searches for your name, they will only see very limited information (a picture and a name). My Foursquare profile just has my name. Use a different FB profile for any bargain freebies (LIKE this to get a widget).

    I wouldn't call it being a predator to want to hang out where there is more of the gender that you like (if you are single). I call it bettering your odds.
