  • That comes VERY close to election tampering - effectively bribing people so that they exercise their voting rights in a certain way.

    https://www.aec.gov.au/about_aec/Publications/Backgrounders/…

And the law is worded fairly broadly:

    1. Section 326 of the Act provides that a person cannot ask for, receive or obtain, or give or confer, any property or benefit with the intention of influencing the vote or candidature of a person at a federal election. The electoral bribery offence does not apply to declarations of public policy or promises of public action.

The offer could be framed as "we're just paying, in NBN fees, to display ads in people's front yard, like buying ad space" but… it's cutting it close to the line.

    • Paying someone to run election advertising does not equal election tampering. All they are doing is what political parties have been doing forever - payment for advertising.

      • Yes, I know, which is why I said:

The offer could be framed as "we're just paying, in NBN fees, to display ads in people's front yard, like buying ad space"

But political parties do have to go through a (supposedly) rigorous process to be registered and to engage in electioneering conduct, and are (again, supposedly) subject to very strict oversight as to what kind of actions they can conduct.

  • I don't need free nbn to convince me to note vote the nats.

  • +1

    Why wouldn't I vote Nationals?
