Samsung Galaxy S9 or wait for S10?

Shuuuu, my fellow ozbargainers, can you guys help me in solving my dilemma of whether to get the s9 for 740 or wait for s10 and wait 6 months later to get it around ~900,

5g is not an issue for me since 4g is fast enough for me.

Also should i get s9 or s9+ with the 500mah extra battery with 2gb of extra ram (doesn’t really matter since i don’t do a lot of stuff on my phone anyway) and bigger screen

I'd wait for the S10 to come out either way, if the S10 is better you know to wait, if the S9 works better, it will likely be priced a lot lower with the S10 out.

    • Yep, the S10 will be mega costly when it comes out and the S9 will drop in price. Once the S10 is out, you can see if the S10 is worth the money…..

Once the S10 is out, you can see if the S10 is worth the money….. explodes/catches-fire randomly from overheating, has any other major issues which warrant reconsideration of purchase, requires a major software update which isn't out yet (to address some major issue with new model)

      • Don’t think price will drop much relative to the price today for s9, since when s9 was introduced s8 price didn’t really drop much either

    • please see logical argument below - i think you're a tad off reality

      • Hay mate, I think you're mixing all our comments up as if we're all just a single person? All I said was with the S10 out OP will be able to better see whether its the type of phone they're looking for and if its worth the money for the extra features or if the S9 fits better, especially as OP seems to already be okay to wait and the S10 releases in a few weeks.

I never said dramatic but you may be right that "likely be priced a lot lower" may end up being "a little lower", but I do imagine the S9 price will drop, putting OP at a much more informed position and price with only a few weeks wait.

          Hey mate,

Not mixing any comments, I am well aware of a forum and how different people post, for all intents and purposes it's a freedom of speech board.

My main point was to advise op that the release of the S10 will not signal a dramatic, or in your case; "likely be priced a lot lower".

As trustnoone wisely mentioned, the s9 will drop (dramatically) in price, the moment s10 is released.

Since you are it seems OK with waiting, this adds an all important 3rd option.

    get the s9 for 740

    OR

(New 3rd option/suggestion) Wait till s10 is out and get s9 for maybe 500 or wait another 6 months after s10 is out maybe 400 for the s9 then

or wait for s10 and wait 6 months later to get it around ~900,

    • logic please

      • Agree, even when s9 was released, s8 price didn’t really drop even further, until recently which dropped by an extra 10 to 40 compared to half a year ago at like 640.

      • I haven't bought a newish phone for a while now, but they always seem to drop in price alot when buying to model a couple of generations old, compared to the latest 'flagship' .

  • If you don't do much on your phone, would an s8, s7 (or other android alternative) be an option too? Will be a fraction of the price of an s9/10!

wait for s10 to come out then buy s9.
    that is the smart way.

  • As trustnoone wisely mentioned, the s9 will drop (dramatically) in price, the moment s10 is released.

WTF, I had to downvote some of these stupid comments, since when does Samsung Flagship phones drop dramatically on the release of their next phone?

    Let's use history as a rule of thumb;

The Samsung Galaxy S8 was released just under 2 years ago at ~$1,200
It's currently selling between $800 - $900 outright at major retailers.

This suggests that at worst case over 2 years, the phone dropped $400 (or $200/year), noting that $800 is the cheapest you can source it from a reliable place right now.

If these duds above used logic, they will note that the S9 will probably be worth around $1,000 - $1,050 when the S10 is released. A far cry from the (drum roll) dramatic drop that you're suggesting to Op.

    • since when does Samsung Flagship phones drop dramatically on the release of their next phone?

Of course the price is going to drop, but yes, depends on what you define 'dramatically' as…… Its not going to half overnight, thats for sure!

      • well the sentiment above to OP suggests a 'dramatic drop' which is worth waiting.
I don't see that discount any different to a standard Harvey/JB frenzy sale

Why not wait for the S11 to come out then get the S10?

    • +1

      haha,

      • wait for S379 and get S378

        • Yeah nah, thought about this the first time i purchased a flagship device 6-7 on this after release, if i keep waiting might as well not buy it since it is released every 12 months and if the next device is released i’d Just be keep waiting for the new phone to drop in price

  • I would really wait for the S10 before committing to S9. It is supposed to have heaps of new features (infinity-O display, new face unlock, faster chip, on screen finger print sensor, etc.). If none of that seem useful compared to the price, then you can get the S9 without any regrets later on.

TBH my advice around phones like Iphone 9 or 10, Galaxy 20 or 21 is the same:

      • Dont let the forthcomming release make you wait in lieu of a price drop (only applicable for high-end flagships of iPhones and Galaxies)

      • Choice to wait or not should be based on functionality, wait for the full spec of the upcomming phone, if there's nothing that tickles your fancy then get the previous release. You will save ~$200.

      • For example… I was in the S8 or S9 dilemma. I found that the S9 builds on everything the S8 does with minimal to no side-effects such as increased weight/poorer battery, etc so I went with the S9.

      • Lastly, never go for a grey-import on Flagships - they're too precious to risk saving $300 for.

      • These are great advice thanks for your input, the phone i am getting is “Australian stock” as they claim, the model number is sm-g960fxxxxxxxx. I know the 960f is Australian stock but the one i am getting the numbers after the “f” is different but i’d Assume its aust stock but different seller have different numbers after “f” i’d Assume

        • dsw460p, dont let 'Australian stock' fool you.

If you're not getting it from Samsung AU, and the major retailers like JB, Harvey, Vodafone, etc then it's grey import.
All they do is get the grey import, flash it with the AU firmware, repack it and send it with an aussie charger.

          • @frostman: Oh no, do you think Samsung store be able to check if phone is aust stock or not, I’m planning on taking it to them immediately after I received it

https://www.thinkofus.com.au/samsung-galaxy-s9-64gb-lilac-pu… It says on warranty that is 24months Samsung but I wouldn’t really trust it

            • @[Deactivated]: Unfortunately they dont offer the services to check phone legitimacy, their opinion is that you buy their phones from their legitimate re-sellers, or direct from Samsung.

Just a note…you would never see JB or Harvey say (Samsung S9, Australian Stock)

The site you provided are all grey imports, your phone is likely a Samsung S9 destined to Kazakhstan which has been flashed with Aussie firmware and a Charger thrown in.

i.e in terms of Samsung Warranty, they won't touch it - you will need to liaise with that mob of a site.

              • -1

@frostman: Shit, should've bought the s9+ from allphones for 100 more

  • Okay, I'll do what noone's done: What phone do you currently have?

This really here determines how much sooner the upgrade you would need. For instance, an old SGSIII, just upgrade now its not worth waiting, but an S8 its wise to wait. The Samsung S7-Exynos, S8 Plus-Snapdragon, and S9 Plus-Snapdragon are all great phones. So I don't doubt one of the S10 Variants will be great as well.
It all comes down to "how great" and "how much".

-If you get the S9 Plus-Snapdragon now, you'll only be paying ~AU$900 which is cheaper than its RRP of $1,400, but remember SGS2 was released for $849 RRP.
-If you wait a little longer, when the S10 variants have shipped for a couple weeks down-under (End of March), the S9 Plus-Snapdragon price will drop to more acceptable levels (run out sale). I suspect they will drop from ~AU$900 to something like ~AU$700. Not insignificant.
-If you wait even longer, the S10-Snapdragon will probably drop from ~AU$1,900 RRP to around ~AU$1,400 which still seems outrageous, though you won't expect the S9 Plus-Snapdragon to drop much below AU$700 at this point (unless used). But more importantly you should, for ~AU$600-$1,100, at least be able to snap one the QSD 855 competitors from the likes of the:
LG G8, HTC U13, Sony XZ4, Nokia 9.1, Xiaomi Mi9, OnePlus 7, Oppo Find11, Vivo NEX Z, ZTE Axon10, Nubia Red, LG V50, Razer Phone3, ASUS RoG Phone 2, Xiaomi Mi Mix4, Xiaomi BlackShark2, Xiaomi Pocophone2, Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 Pro.

Then again, my crystal ball may be on the fritz ¯_(ツ)_/¯

    • That’s a lot of information, currently have the s3 and planning to upgrade since the camera sometimes doesn’t open but the rest of the stuff is fine, however i have bought the s9. Thanks for your input.

    • Are you ruling out aussie stock s8 / s9? (as they run exynos?) And if so where would you recommend getting the snapdragon model?

      • Not really, they both cost roughly equal.
I put the Exynos/Snapdragon just as a nod as to which is the better variant.

        As a history lesson:
        Exynos version better: S1, S2, S3, S6, S7
        Snapdragon version better: S4, S5, S8, S9
…we will see about the S10 variants soon, but if I were a betting man, I would say the QSD 855 version will have a sizeable edge over the Exynos 9820.
