  • My Chromebook Pro is an incredible laptop. Use it more than my Dell XPS

    • +3

I am typing up this deal on my Asus Chromebook C100PA that I bought back in 2015. Horrible performance, but often ended up being my evening computer when I just want to lie on the crouch and browse OzBargain, because it's so light and convenient.

      • Had the c300 was an ok laptop but ended up flipping it a while back, remember when chromebooks were sub 400 dollars?

      • Yeah totally, it's the best OS for bumming around! I used to have the Toshiba CB-30, which was fine for casual use, but couldn't deal with heaps of tabs open, and suffered from fairly bad performance. I ended up replacing it with the Samsung about 2 years ago, and it's still feels as zippy as when I got it. I now use it for a lot of my work emails / research too.

The added benefit is that it means most of your wear and tear is happening on a device which isn't your main, more expensive device. My XPS feels brand new, and will probably last a lot longer than it would have, as I only use it for the tasks that require a powerful computer.

Could never imagine shelling out over $500 for a CB though. Couldn't really imagine ever getting a Pixelbook.

      • Why not using a tablet instead?

        • Neither Android tablets nor iPad run full version of Chrome with extensions and developer tools. Windows tablets on the other hand have other issues making them less efficient than ChromeOS.

          • @scotty: Good point, I never thought of that

    • I have the Pro as well for bed, uni whatever else.

I mostly use my ChromeOS desktop (like right now) that I got back in 2014. Still pumping, no issues and use it heaps.

  • I wish they made a low spec chrome book that otherwise has 8gb ram. That's the only thing they need to make them fly even more imo

Get the M3 version if you can. Got mine from the US Black Fridays sale and I love it!

    • How much did you get it for?

      • +1

Bought it directly from Samsung US and used forwarder so it was 600 plus AUD..

  • what apps can use this machine? can i use play store android apps?

    • Yeah, Android apps via Google Play Store and now Linux apps too (if you want to get to know Linux).

    • +1

Not all, but most. I always have Firefox, Netflix and VLC on mine.

      • Whats word/excel like on the chrome book?

        • I've personally only used the web versions. I know someone who has downloaded the Android version of PowerPoint and they were happy with it. I imagine it's going to watered down like the web versions. But if you plan to do document editing offline, then downloading the Android Word and Excel would be good.

Google's tools are pretty decent too, but you'll want to use Microsoft products if you really want to be compatible with the stuff in your office/school.

          • @BadGiraffe: I don't mind google's versions, but the missus is not a fan, I got her using Web excel on PC and she's happy with that, as long as it's similar on Chrome, should be okay.

Thanks for the input, now to find a good priced AU Chromebook.

            • @Nalar: Don't get a crappy one. Get one with decent specs. The Asus C302 was my 1st choice, but I got the cheaper sibling, the C213. Kind of regretting it. I would have loved a backlit keyboard.

    • Just keep in mind some apps don't work, some will just crash.

  • GST will be charged on import?

    • +1

For under AU $1000 items, the retailers are supposed to opt-in to charge the GST. Looks like B&H can't be bothered.

      • I like B&H. I wish more people were like them.

Now that I think about it, it's totally possible that the ones who charge the GST are only claiming to "opt in" but are pocketing the GST for themselves.

  • Also Google are providing updates until June 2024 according to their support page so this Chromebook should last you a while.

  • Does this come with 2 years Google Drive storage?

  • Cheaper here if you have Prime and CashRewards: https://www.amazon.com.au/Samsung-Chromebook-Plus-Camera-Chr…

    • Says on the page:

Note: Not eligible for Amazon Prime

Not sure why, as it's sold by Amazon US.

  • I suppose this charges via USB C port as I can not see a proprietary charging port ( unless it's not a round but some other fancy port lol ).

I really want my next small portable laptop to be a 2 in 1 convertible And USB C charging ( so I can use my usb type C PD power banks and simpler charging methods all round).

A stylus might end up being a bonus, but really can't see myself using that much lol.

    • +1

Indeed, charges via USB C. It's nice to be able to use the same charger on my phone.

      • Great to hear. Will keep an eye on this model or similar this year if price get's a little more tempting.

Still have a HP 14" Chromebook with 4GB ram and decent CPU for it's day, Celeron 2955U with similar performance to this CPU but uses a bit more power ( bought around 3 1/2 yrs ago at the fading days of Dick Smith, and silly me got talked into a full replacement extra 2YRS Warranty for an extra $50 ). It's still in good working order with the battery down maybe 20-30% as I really have not used it that much, but would like a chromebook a bit thinner and lighter with a nicer IPS FHD touchscreen, USB C charging and of course an even longer battery life is always a bonus.

        • +1

Nice. The upcoming Asus C434 might take your fancy. Looks like a really solid new 14" that should come in at a good price within the next few months.

          • @Tinqer: Thanks for heads up, will start reading up about it. How much do you stink it will be here in AU?

Or will we have to get it from O.S.?

            • +1

@ozhunter68: Mmm still pretty unsure. There's a chance they'll bring it to Aus properly, Asus sometimes do.
Either way I imagine 650 AUD minimum, maybe up to 900, when not on sale :)

  • Anyone used the m3 and Celeron versions (or equivalent)? How do they compare? I can see that the m3 has approximately double the Octane score of the Celeron version however curious how this would translate to real world usage (performance / battery life)…
