[NSW] How I Made $1000 in Flybuys Points in 2018 for Free Using The Opal Hack

How I made $1000 in flybuys points in 2018.

Applies to NSW only.

In this post I'll share how I got over 200k flybuys points worth $1000 in 2018 using the opal hack for free.

In summary

  1. Start multiple flybuys cards.
  2. Enable promotions.
  3. Stack flybuys offers.
  4. Buy discount coles giftcards.
  5. Top up opal cards.
  6. Finally - and heres the kicker - when you have too much in opal credits - refund the card (and pocket the discount!!)

The explanation

  1. Multiple cards:
You want to have multiple flybuys cards to take advantage of the different offers available to your cards from time to time.

This also helps keep the bonus points requirement low as you can stop using one card when their requirement gets too high. Personally I stop using a card when their requirement gets over $120 spend per shop - $120 is the maximum top up an opal can take at a time. An opal card can hold $250 max credit at a time.

  2. Enabling promotions
Obvious ones as you'll need to know when a offer is on.

  3. Stacking offers
If there are paper offers, email 3 day promo and weekly shop offers, you can qualify for all offers with the single shop.

  4. Discount giftcards
You can save an extra 5% on the cost of topup with #egiftcards (via your energy provider, insurance company, bank, employer)

  5. Topup opal card
This one is an everyday cost and the easiest way to hit the offers.

  6. Refund opal
Basically makes the opal top ups free. Takes about 20 days to get refund.

I'm not sure how long it would be before they close the loophole, as woolworths stopped giving rewards points for opal top up around 2 years ago. So get in quick before it gets ozbargained out.

Comments

  • How many opal card did you refunded? And they dont stop you keep refunding opal card?

    • I did about 20 or so last year using 3 separate opal accounts.
And yes register your cards in case they get lost.

    What is an opal card?

    • +5

OP forgot to say his trick is only restricted to NSW at very limited Coles locations.

      • Good point thanks. I'll add it in the body.

  • +1

Thx max credit an Opal card can hold at a time is $250. Hardly worth the effort for locking up the capital and waiting few weeks for the refund.

  • +1

    way too much effort

  • +3

I've made $900 per year in flybuys dollars just on normal spending taking up targeted offers with three family members having their own accounts. You don't have to go to this much effort. I didn't have to spend any more than I was going to on regular grocery spending. This was on top of a similar amount of value from Woolworths rewards. I don't use credit card sign ups or insurance points. I also use discounted gift cards at both. My coles discounted cards come from my health insurance.

I can't believe flybuys still allows opal top ups as qualifying purchases for targeted offers. I'm sure they'll exclude them soon.

The capital tie up mentioned in one of the comments is a good point and wouldn't be suitable for people who are living month to month and don't have savings behind them.

    • Because there are very limited store accept Opal top up, not enough incentive to close it off

  • +2

I'm happy with my woolies reward card giving me $30 discount each year.

    • -2

Yeah I gotta say the Woolworths discount is better than Flybuys

  • +1

Thank you OP. This is a good one

    • +1

      Appreciate the thank you.

  • How much money did you need to spend approximately to get that $1000 worth?

    • Not sure as I didn't get the review email on my 2nd card.

On my 1st card it was 3889 for 86k points. Imagine the 2nd card would have a even better ratio.

Only spend like normal and top up opal to hit the flybuys offer requirements.

      • +1

This makes more sense. If you have a $60 voucher but only a $50 grocery bill top up opal to qualify for the voucher then when you have too much opal credit get a refund.

  • -1

This is in violation of a lot of T&C's (in essence, it is theft). What a $1000 is worth in life to put yourself through this hassle for 1 year and undermine your conscience?

I'm all in support of buying discounted stuff or using your amex statement credits to make some extra cash but opening multiple flybuy accounts?!

    • -4

      Thank you for your comment.

Can you show me where it says that you can't hold more than 1 flybuys account?

      https://www.flybuys.com.au/about/#/flybuys-terms-and-conditi…

I can't say its much of a hassle because opal is an everyday expense for me and i would have topped up at coles anyway with my discount egiftcard, and I only do it when they have promotions on.

According to the 2018 in review email, i gained 86160 points by spending 3889 normal dollars. (I.e. 82k are bonus points). I didnt get the review email on my other card but imagine the ratios are even better as I started that card later to link to velocity flyer.

FYI I managed to do this with only 2 flybuys accounts, which I started late in the year (prob august) as I wanted to link to velocity flyer which requires my real birthday. Flybuys doesn't let you update your birthday for some reason.

I originally registered the original card with a fake birthday as I am wary of their security.

Once that new card was registered I started seeing different offers for both cards and started sharing the tip with everyone when I saw their offers were something ridiculous like spend 240per week each week to get 10k points.

I even shared that tip with my followers here:
      https://www.instagram.com/p/BqMsftCnMvj/?utm_source=ig_share…

And here's the link to the opal T&C. No where does it says you cant refund excess cards.
      https://www.opal.com.au/en/asset/92b9c9a2-aa9e-457d-ac6b-6a3…

Everything shared is legal. And nobody is forcing you to do anything you dont want.

      Appreciate your attention.

      • And you have two households?

        • I'm really trying too see your side here.

The term household doesn't even appear on the sign up T&C.

          Where are you seeing this?

@Ozgiftcards: I believe there will be different views one way or another. Selling qantas points are in violation of T&Cs too - but it is done widely on ozbargain…

          • -3

@Ozgiftcards: Well, then just give them your correct residential address and let the rest up to them.

They have indicated this requirement twice in T&C.

If you do this along with correct name, rest assured that you will only ever get one bonus.

Having said that what you are doing is having an uncivilized life. All of these rules and restrictions are because of civilisation. Otherwise, the cave man would do just about the same as you and there is nothing wrong about it.

            • @[Deactivated]: They have my correct residential address and name.

Thats how they send the physical card to you.

I used 2 different email address which I'm sure everyone have multiple emails.

What you're saying is akin to saying that we can't have multiple bank accounts, one for personal, one for business, or create multiple companies or business etc.

              • +2

@Ozgiftcards: I have 5 of each Flybuys and Woolworths rewards accounts with my correct address and collect bonus points on all of those accounts. After all it could be a share house.

  • +4

I'm not sure how long it would be before they close the loophole

Probably not long now, seeing as though some idiot put a step by step guide on how to cheat the system up on ozbargain.

    • +2

Haha opportunities are everywhere. Did you know that you can buy toilet paper from big W, flip them on eBay, and make a profit?

      • +6

        Well, shit…

    • +3

I think the OP has been benefiting on this loophole all these while and I appreciate him sharing the deal. I believe by sharing such guide OP might get traffics to his webpage but with so many mainstream channels that we can get discounted giftcards from, I’m not sure how much benefit he is getting while risking the fact that this $$ loophole might be closed due to this post.

He might be seen as an idiot, but the effort to type the guide and share it with the public deserves a thumb up I guess (Too bad I don’t live in NSW…)

ps: I’m not related to OzGiftCards

  • +4

whats first rule of fight club?

    • +9

      punch OP

  • -1

These are the things that you should not do or suggest others to abuse the benefits of using flybuys. I top up as well but not in an abusive way like what you doing.

Why can't you think of just work on lower tier discount shopping to meet promotion target over this. Exactly people like you kill the benefits of the program.

    • +4

I hear you, why do you think Woolworths stopped giving rewards points pretty quickly in the top up program?

The program is going to be updated eventually regardless.

I'm letting the community know how they can take advantage of the offer while it lasts. This is ozbargain isn't it?

      • +2

I am not sure it is worth their time to change the program to account for a few people, like us who take advantage. Many people cannot even be bothered to become a member and of those that do, very few I think, take advantage of these opportunities. It does take some time, head space and organisational skills do do. Even some people on here will not bother as shown by some comments above.

  • +1

does opal card topup still gives you flybuys bonus point for minimum spent on coles?like 1000 point on $50 spent offer?

  • How to find which coles does opal in sydney area

  • Can you qualify for bonus flybuys points if you pay for the shop by redeeming existing points? E.g. the offer is spend $30 and get 1200 points. Can I pay the $30 using existing flybuys points, and still get the bonus?

    • +1

Yes, you can. The points are a payment method and nothing to do with how much is spent.

      • Great thanks!

  • Opal is cracking down on people that do this now though. You'll be investigated for fraud if you're caught
