Newbie Thinking of Finally Grabbing a Prebuilt PC for Gaming and Other Stuff - Recommendations Please?

Hey all, so I purchased Monster Hunter on Steam on a whim (also- I just found out they were actually on console first lol, I have a PS4, why do I do this to myself) and after watching a parody on Gintama and then looking it up on google (it looks super cool and fun to play!) unfortunately I'm on a mac OTL, and for some reason, bootcamp won't enable windows due to a lack of space even though I've got more than enough (minimum 40gb it says and when I checked, I've got nearly 100GB free) so okay-

Maybe I'll finally grab a PC.

This is the recommended specs to run MH:

  • OS: WINDOWS® 7, 8, 8.1, 10 (64-bit required)
  • Processor: Intel® Core™ i7 3770 3.4GHz or Intel® Core™ i3 8350 4GHz or AMD Ryzen™ 5 1500X
  • Memory: 8 GB RAM
  • Graphics: NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 1060 (VRAM 3GB) or AMD Radeon™ RX 570X (VRAM 4GB)
  • DirectX: Version 11
  • Network: Broadband Internet connection
  • Storage: 20 GB available space
  • Sound Card: DirectSound (DirectX® 9.0c or better)
  • Additional Notes: 1080p/30fps when graphics settings are set to “High”

I'd be incredibly happy with a 'mini-pc' that can handle the above but am fine with a normal computer tower type since I've just moved and got the space for it now yayy

also the above is definitely capable of running other programs like Photoshop and AutoCAD etc? I want to explore more of the creative apps while I'm upgrading ahaha

Budget I guess if possible- under $500? If not, max. $1000 I guess :') I don't want to spend more since I practically spent the same amount*2ish recently for the townhouse bond and furniture- my account is thinning OTL

I don't care about aesthetics of the PC much, just the specs haha cheers!

I just want to confirm - you have other uses in mind for the PC than just playing Monster Hunter right? Because otherwise you're spending $500-$1000 on a PC when you can just buy a copy of Monster Hunter for PS4 (~$50).

Definitely more than just playing MH!!!

But I also saw that EB has them for a discount… I'll grab that while I wait for the PC haha

Hahahaha, you sure you don't wanna let your bank balance recover a bit? AMD 7-series GPU just dropped, as well as rumours of new AMD CPU chips. If you wait a little while, could be price drops on the horizon. Otherwise - what phunky linked below is solid though personally I like AMD Ryzen CPU builds for better multitasking. TechfastAU has some cracking deals though, especially when eBay sales are on so keep an eye out for those.

        • I might wait yeah for my balance to recover :') and I'm glad to hear that prices might drop soon! (eta though? couple of months? 3 months?) thinking of seeing people's recommendations on what to grab for now though!! deal or no deal lol

          • @drumrollplease: The new 7-series AMD GPUs literally went on sale I think today or yesterday, so you should see price drops across older GPUs within the next couple of weeks.

but if you're serious on photoshop, you need to shell out serious money for color calibrated displays

    • I've got a SP4 https://www.reddit.com/r/Surface/comments/3rjjk0/display_cal… maybe I can do what this person did? But yeah it's just for fun, nothing serious for now!

Thanks for the rec :) I've already got a monitor though (and a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse - I just connect it with my existing laptops for that big screen lmao) - I don't reckon they sell just the PC without the keyboard/mouse/monitor?

    • That's a pretty good deal.

    • didn't know that was korean! TIL!

    • Thanks. Was too afraid to ask what it meant without showing my age. OTL

You've got some options upgrade wise. SSD, RAM, PSU and MoBo.

I'd upgrade the mobo to a b350 board and the PSU to a 750w unit through the site.

The RAM can be gotten cheaper on eBay (search up the part # once you get it) or could be completely upgraded to a quicker set (2666/3000).

The SSD has been said to be meh. I've had no problem with mine, but my high's a WD green. You should be able to pick up a mx500 (or whatever the crucial drive is called) for about $90 (effectively what you'd pay for a 480 SSD via the site due to losing the 128gb drive through upgrade.

    Hope this helps.

*Note, these systems can also be bought on eBay for lower sometimes. You'd be losing out on the mobo and PSU upgrades though.

  • Steam offers refunds, in case you have buyers remorse.

    • nah I'll keep it all good thanks though ahaha

  • I can't give specific advice to the current PC scene but in general it is best to save up all the money required (don't forget about screen, keyboard, mouse, headphones and/or speakers). Prices of CPUs and GPUs will always drop. Once you have enough money buy it all at once.

    • Already have everything but the computer itself (I've got a screen I use to connect my laptop to for two screens. Bluetooth keyboards and mouse. Headphones I've got plenty of. Speakers aplenty as well for music and the tv downstairs haha) cheers though yeah!
