Using 1.1.1.1 Claiming Faster & Safer Internet but Is It? Anyone Had Experience with It or Similar ?

It claims to be faster & safer

Not fully aware with VPN or whatever they are called. Sick of being tracked. Will this stop tracking ?

Is it safer? Yes and no. 1.1.1.1 will block random people (e.g. your ISP) from seeing your DNS responses and requests. Cloudflare can still see them and we truly have no idea what they do with that data. For better security it'd be better to do DNS over https/tls as that'll encrypt the connection between your computer and the DNS server. This is something 1.1.1.1 supports unlike Google and others :)

As for my experience with speed, I've found it to be faster than Google's 8.8.8.8 as that would usually result in slower page loading times. Not a massive noticeable difference and my ISP always ends up being faster.

So I guess if you want a tad better privacy, want to bypass certain DNS blocks or even want to go down the encrypted route it's worth a shot. As for speed it might make a difference, no difference or perhaps even worse.

  • Cloud flare is pretty popular, a lot of websites use it for its DDOS protection and stuff, but I think you're essentially changing your DNS you can find more info here: https://www.cloudflare.com/learning/dns/what-is-1.1.1.1/

But from my understanding, when you go to a website, you're inputting the site name (www.google.com) this brings you to the DNS, which changes your site name to the IP address to go to. Your ISP probably uses a specific one which is likely not great in accuracy and probably tracked for whatever reason. Changing it prevents man in the middle attacks and probably has better encryption if your trust cloudflare (Which a lot of places do).

In saying that, you're not using a VPN here, websites are likely still tracked here, I think you still have your normal cookies etc. It may help you get around banned sites, but thats more because of a lazy ISP just removing a banned site from their DNS and not because its blocked in any real way. Some popular VPNs are PIA I guess?

For actual privacy you need a VPN. Linus explains the cloudflare DNS here in this video.

  • Download Namebench and find out.

  • i recently put in google wifi at my house, and found that it uses their DNS instead of my ISP's

  • I've been using 1dot for a while now. It's pretty quick.

  • No-one's mentioned EDNS Client Subnet? Considering so much of people's internet use is through CDNs (video, OS updates, even the images for big sites), it's important for performance that the CDN nodes know your location so they can route you to the best server. Cloudflare doesn't support ECS but others, like Google DNS, do.

As with a lot of things, it's a trade-off - privacy versus performance. Cloudflare doesn't support ECS because that would mean passing identifiable information onto these CDN providers. Of course, Google has a different approach. If you don't want Google to track all your DNS searches, OpenDNS is another option that supports ECS. It's up to the individual how they value these things (privacy vs performance).

Edit: This is roughly what I'm talking about: https://www.sajalkayan.com/post/cloudflare-1dot1dot1dot1.htm…

  • My isp iiNet has blocked a certain private torrent site and just by changing my DNS to 1.1.1.1 it now fine again
Can’t tell the difference in speed I’m on nbn 100/40 sync at 97/35

  • I have used google's DNS, not any more

I have used openDNS, but my private tracker site recommended cloudFare

    So I use cloudFare

But why don't you check it all out yourself with DNS Benchmark - https://www.grc.com/dns/benchmark.htm

I have been using it for yonks

  • I've used Cloudflare 1.1.1.1 for my DNS for the last few months, but have noticed recently that site loading is slower than it should be.

I suspect it is due to Cloudflare routing Australian links via the cheapest and not the fastest (Telstra or Optus) routes.
    read this link

So now I've changed back to Google 8.8.8.8 , and will see how it goes.
Seems faster, but at this stage might be a placebo effect.

    • Thanks I stick with 8888 then. More lucky numbers than 1111
