Saw the Verbatim USB deal… but USB 2.0 is like the FTTN NBN vs USB 3.0 which is FTTP NBN.
Bought them yesterday but didn't think much of the price. Guy said they were on sale. Its cheaper than anything I can find on eBay.

Ive got a bunch of USB's left over from the last decade (or two). Unless you lose them which seems to be the fate of most USBs.
As per the specs it is backward compatible with USB 2.0! Would this still be an issue with older BIOS/PI?
"Dual Compatibility – USB 3.0 connectivity; backwards compatible with USB 2.0"
I dont know of any USB 3.0 devices which aren't backwards compatible. But OP's example is a niche thing with older products, although I do find it weird why USB 3 wouldnt work with 2. Nowadays though modern machines dont even use BIOS they all have UEFI.
The Kingston Datatraveler G3 is specifically mentioned in this blog post by the Director of Engineering at the Raspberry Pi foundation:
Some flash drives have a very specific protocol requirement that we don’t handle; as a result of this, we can’t talk to these drives correctly. An example of such a drive would be the Kingston Data Traveller 100 G3 32G.
Note that the post is talking about booting from USB. I have one an as a normal (non-boot) drive it seems to work fine with the Raspberry Pi.
It depends on what type/variety of devices you come across. I've come across heaps of devices such as audio interfaces which don't play nicely with USB3 but are perfectly fine with USB2. Have had similar issues with software drivers from some companies as well. M-Audio is well known for this problem.

Akai have also had difficulties with this problem as well but more so with regards to interfacing with existing systems which don't support backwards compatibility properly.

it might not be usb 2 vs usb 3 but rather the size of the drive and most usb 2 were smaller.
i still keep some old drives and sd cards 2gb 4gb, 8gb for legacy devices as that is the biggest size they support.
haven’t seem many 8 gb usb 3 devices.
so people need to check the max size supported for legacy devices rather than the speed.
I thought so too, but have found a few times where things have failed with multiple USB3.0 USB Keys then I find the one USB2.0 stick left in my arsenal and boom, just works.
It's not common, and if you're buying it for general use then go 3.0, just thought worth mentioning having a 2.0 can be good.
Kingston 64GBs running at $15 as well. Very reliable flashdrive in my experience. People complain they're a little large but its not the size that counts mayte. Picked up a couple yesterday.
If anything they say its a little bit slow. But I use microSD cards nowadays to transfer files. Only had a need for USBs recently for booting and device recovery.
My comment was more to facilitate the phrase "its not the size that counts"….
Although the drives are rather large.
How's the write speed.
This is better than the Verbatim deal I posted. Good stuff!
Shipping kind of blows out the cost of the deal. $12 postage for just two of them
too lazy to walk to MSY; does Officework sell this stuff? I'll take 5% price beat.
There is a store in capital square in Haymarket selling the 16gb 3.0 for $5. They had a signage on the window. This was on special 3 weeks ago, not sure if they are still on sale.
If there's an Aldi near you, they have a 16GB one for $6.
USB 3 ?
Oh… no. Sorry.
got the 64gb version in the last deal, it does not plug in properly with some usb ports and even if it does, keeps disconnecting.
the speed is slower than my emtec usb 3.0.
at the moment using it as my router usb, does the job well and does not keep disconnecting.
This banner on the MSY website indicates it's a "Back to School" sale 14/1/19 - 18/2/19. You might like to add the end date to your post
Thanks, didn’t even see that. Haha.
Product page speed specs: 10Mb/s write
Just noticed that, Datasheet only specifies read speeds! Nothing about Write speeds!
Speed:
32GB, 64GB: 100MB/s read
128GB, 256GB: 130MB/s read

Review for this drive…. https://usb.userbenchmark.com/Kingston-DataTraveler-100-G3-U…
"This drive is actually slower at writing than a lot of USB 2.0 drives, it's seriously dog slow."
My 32GB gets 74.4 MB writes and 140 MB reads. Did I just get an amazing bin or something? It's seriously my fastest USB I have, I love it.
I just got the 64gb one today. It fluctuates the entire time, 24MB/s down to 0 bytes/s. Like a (profanity) wave of mediocrity. https://i.imgur.com/YW58s31.jpg
I've been searching for over an hour for a fix, but everything I try fails to fix the problem. I just hope that by the time I actually fill it up, the reading speed will be leaps and bounds better and I won't have to worry about the writing speed again.
I think this makes a better NBN analogy. So many USB 3.0 drives have such poor write speeds they aren't worth getting but still rely a lot on the USB 3.0 marketing.
USB3.0 with slow writes = FTTN (still branded NBN)
USB3.0 with good writes = FTTP
Personally, on the 32GB model, I get just over 20MB/s for large sequential writes and 130 MB/s reads.
I think it's fair to say that the performance matches the price.
I have the 32GB too.
74.4 MB/s writes
140 MB/s reads
I don't know why yours is so poor.
So performed a quick real world test for the sake of curiosity.
Write speeds from a HDD to the drive itself ranged consistently between 20+ to 30 odd mb/s for larger files. 20+ with the occasional dip under the 20 mark for batches of smaller files.
A large file from SSD leveled out around the mid 30 to 40 mark.
My two cents for what its worth.
Carry on.
thanks
Thanks. Op
How much is shipping?
how does Kingston drives compare with Officeworks - "Verbatim" drives' ? see here
https://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/verbatim-3…
USB 2.0 VS USB 3.0? That's a no brainer…. Unless the USB 3.0 really sucks, like the one I got from aldi.
These would still play movies fine I think.
My main use would just be copying a video (avi,mp4) from laptop usb3 port to this USB.
So I guess I need to know write speed of this 64gb in deal, compared to the average 64gb usb3 stick ?
No exact number required, just a rough idea of how much faster a comparable usb 64gb drive will write .
Most of my video files and 200mb to 2gb. Will it be 3 times slower, or 5 times slower etc
I have the 32GB version and get approx: 74.4MB/s writes and 140MB/s reads
I don't know why people talk about USB 2.0 speeds, this is a brilliant USB. Unless I just got lucky and got an awesome bin.
I have 4x32gb of these kingstons and 2 are fast and the 2 are slow. all from MSY so it's the luck of the draw.
That makes sense, I just got extremely lucky then. Probably won't buy more if if it's a lucky dip.
Are they waterproof, or only if they stay sealed? 😎
great price
Good deal.
Umart have Kingston 64gb for $14. They look a little different.
The image looks different but the product specs at the bottom point to the same product. It is cheaper at umart it seems.
All out of stock in NSW, so quick.
I just bought two 64gb from slacks creek and write speeds are 15MB/s. Bummer
I've often used these and similar drives plugged into a Raspberry Pi - as it's ports are all USB2 you're not going to suffer there.
Useful for very low power storage on the network, e.g. if you're using it as a download mule to bring down large files with Aria2… Lets you kick off a big download and then power down your main PC (or take it with you) and the Pi continues with the download, extremely useful if you have a slow link.
Australia post in lilydale are selling 3x 16gb USB 2.0 Sticks for $2 on clearance. Bought 3 for $2. Just FYI it was in Lilydale might not be nation wide.
Do these have a hole so you can attach a lanyard? Not clear with by the photo. Thanks.
Yes, they have a loop hole at the end.
Sometimes you need a USB 2.0 drive, some BIOS & Raspberry Pi tasks have become long troubleshooters until I realised incompatibility with USB 3.0
So yes speed wise big difference, but sometimes it's needed for other purposes :)
