Long Term Laptop under $1500

My eldest sister is in search for a long term laptop to replace her that has been slowly dying from use. She wanted to re-purchase a Toshiba model laptop, however, Toshiba has stopped producing laptops.

Does anyone have any recommendations that fulfills the criteria below?

  • Must be a PC (a non-mac enthusiast)
  • Must be durable (able to survive a 3 year-old being difficult essentially destroying the machine physically…)
  • Usage will mainly consists of using Office Suite, surfing the internet and watching videos.
  • Screen resolution preferably should be more than 15 inches.
  • Video quality should be above average, no screen glare or mirroring background.
  • Must have a good battery life.
  • SSD would be great but not needed.

Thank you.

You'll need a military grade laptop for that.

    • No modern laptop is safe from a 3yo

How many sisters do you have?

      Under $1500

That's a very generous budget for the requirements listed (minus 3yo)

Any 1080p laptop on special at officeworks or jb will suit.

Screen won't be above average for sub $1500.
It would be wise to wait for an eBay discount code.

Does this laptop just need a fresh os installation on a new ssd. A lot cheaper and will make a world of difference. Seems criminal to spend $1500 to surf the net and type up a word doc.

I installed an ssd and win10 on a family members 2011 i5 dell inspiron. Loads in about 15 seconds and does everything your sister would want with ease.

  • I have Alienware that lasts me 6 years now and I use it during business hours for the past 5 years, never missed a beat (apart from battery of course). They key (also with every laptop) is to clean the dust inside and reapply thermal paste to CPU & GPU every year.

Alienware 13 & 15 can be had for $1900 which can be further haggled down by talking to chat. Not to mention you can claim 3 years depreciation as work/study laptop.

  • One way to reduce impact of a 3yo using a laptop is having a separate keyboard and mouse, indeally wireless. Personally a computer would be off-limits for a 3yo.

Dell currently have 20% off in their eBay store, plenty of options in the sub-$1500 area.
