Powerbank Heat up When Charge iPad

Sup guys, this has got me scratching my head for a while but it has agitated me more and more recently. I have tested this between 3 different powerbanks, and when i plug the cable into my power bank to charge my ipad, it heats up to extremely high temperateures that i am afraid my powerbank battery exploding to the point that it is even hot to touch.

1) do any of you have this problem or is it just me

2) what power bank do you use

I think its normal. I have an ipad too and have a few powerbanks as well and they all heat up pretty hot when charging the ipad.

    • If you have an iphone does it happen also(want to see if if happens to all apple devices, and what powerbanks do you use and also which ipad do you use, i have fhe 2017

Does your whole powerbank get hot or only the charge port area

      • I dont have an iphone but I do have an android phone that uses "quick charge" and it gets warm but not as hot as when ipad. I've got the ipad pro 11 (2018) which charges at 30W (USB-C PD, powerbank max is 45W and ipad gets hotter than using the included charger), phone I think is around 18W (QC 2.0). So there's a spot where its pretty warm/hot and the rest of the powerbank is just a bit warm. My powerbank is the Cygnett ChargeUp Pro 20k. Also tried on the mi powerbank 2 and it got warm too, not as hot as cygnett though.

        • Thanks for replying, my phone doesn’t charge that fast (even though it can [qc2.0 as well :)] since my power bank limit is 10W and also my ipad uses 10W as well, but even though both have the same amperage and voltage, when i charge my phone it does not get warm even, but when i plug it into my ipad the charging port immediately heats up to extreme temperatures.

However, in your case it would make sense if it heats up since there would be a lot of amps when charging your ipad and amp causes heat=energy loss (that’s why there is step up and step down transformers when carry electricity in power lines

          • @[Deactivated]: hmmm maybe phone is more picky about charging voltage and uses less current to maintain voltage closer to 5V? I have never tried TPLINK powerbanks but maybe it’s design wasn’t very good and like the one in this video at 14minutes (https://youtu.be/rcCewyrKNSQ) the transistor and one of other component(choke I think) reached 140C, which behaviour seems to be like yours gets really hot immediately and I would assume ipad would ask for the max 5v 2.1a for its bigger battery. The worst powerbanks i’ve tested was romoss solo 6 and a dell one which claims to be able to charge 5V, 2.1A but when I tested it with them usb voltage meter thing they maxed out around 1A before voltage drops.

            • @FuzzyWolf: If that’s the case I would buy one of the amp meter to test it out then, I actually wonder if it’s like that as well

  • 2) what power bank do you use

    • Tplink 10000,

  • How hot? Can you keep your hand on it?

    • Yeah, but it goes to worrying temperatures, losses so much energy that it can only charge 30% of my ipad

  • Try a different cable, preferably genuine Apple. Update iOS to current if possible, and tell us what powerbank this is.

    • I did i use a tp link 10000

Your post isn’t very clear. Are you saying that the iPad heats up or the power bank battery heats up?

    • Powerbank Heat up When Charge iPad

it heats up to extremely high temperateures that i am afraid my powerbank battery exploding to the point that it is even hot to touch.

      How is that not clear?

      • I think it's marginally confusing in that:

I have tested this between 3 different powerbanks, and when i plug the cable into my power bank to charge my ipad, it heats up to extremely high temperateures

OP mentions trying multiple powerbanks, one ipad, and then says "it heats up" (as opposed to say, "they heat up"). Reading the post as a whole, I think it refers to the powerbanks too.

        • Only powerbank heat up but not the ipad, ipad charge normally, hiwever the energy from powerbsnk is lost since electricity is transfered to heat. therefore capacity isreduced

  • Powerbanks heating up, even hot to the touch, is fairly standard. Do watch out if they start physically bulging though, but otherwise not really cause for concern.

    • This happens for you too, does it gethot when you charge your iphone(if you have one, cause most peopke use android here)
