My 4+yo TP-link D9 died on the weekend - it won't sync to DSL and the relevant admin screens give errors although the local wifi network still works intermittently.
It's not ideal timing to replace the modem because HFC NBN is supposedly coming in April, although the delays and rescheduling means I'll believe it when I see it.
I was previously using the Guest network on the D9 to keep a RasPi with Hassio and IOT devices 'separate' from my main network. When I get around to it, I was planning on trying to isolate the IOT devices, but not the RasPi from teh rest of my network more effectively.
I need decent wifi strength/distance as I need to reach the garage where I've got a xiaomi hub and will be installing a wifi link to a POE switch to run some security cameras. Apart from the switch, I don't yet have a wifi receiver to connect the POE switch, so I'm open to considering a mesh setup if that's the best long-term value.
I have borrowed a technicolor tg789vac which is syncing DSL and providing basic wifi, but which has a clunky interface and is a PITA to configure wifi, fixed IPs, port forwards etc. I may be able to keep it semi-permanently if it is worth keeping.
Any suggestions greatly appreciated.
I'd get a second hand "modem version" of popular routers such as Asus RT68U or Netgear R7000 and then sell it when NBN arrives.
You could possibly disable the modem and use the device you buy as your LAN router depending on how good the NBN equipment is but you can sell it at a small profit or loss in any case.
eBay is where I'd look but there's other places as well.
