Pathetic Internet Speed

What kind of "broadband" is this - 9:28AM Tuesday?

Unfortunately my area is at the bottom of the list, won't be connected until end this year. I have checked, no cable or fixed wireless provider in the area either.

What other options do I have now?

  • mobile broadband? I use it at home and out and about- works well for me but depends on where you are.

100GB a month? My sons eat that in one breakfast!

    • There are unlimited mobile data plans if you are prepared to pay!

      • I heard about an unlimited mobile plan from Telstra at $99 a month that can be shared for in home use. Is it still around as I could not find it yet?
Any other? They must be capped after certain amount of data?

oh, it appears its not offered anymore sorry! Optus is now a 500Gig plan for $80 a month. The telstra one I saw, and that is still available (Uncapped) is on a mobile phone plan, and its like 199 a month.

    What are is that?

    • 3012

      • Post Code 3012 = Maidstone, West Footscray, Kingsville, Kingsville West, Brooklyn, Tottenham

        • I'm guessing it's not Tottenham. If memory serves me correctly it is the only Melbourne suburb with a population of 0.

      • Guess wireless is your only real option if you need high speed. I'm on TPG FTTB (which is very good already) and my wireless 4G is usually faster about 50% of the time.

  • Assuming this is ADSL. How far are you from the exchange?

  • TPG technician actually came and tested the line. While the chap was there, the speed was fine, went up to 10Mbps download.
The problem is it can drop to almost dead unpredictably!

    • 10Mbps download.

You need to contact your phone line provider and get them to keep fixing it. You've obviously got issues with your copper line.

      So either:

      a) persist with your phone line provider (Telstra/TPG or whoever you're paying for line rental or naked dsl) to get your line fixed;
      b) go Mobile broadband (which can have it's own mess attached).

If you have a phone line, check for noise. Don't be happy with slight scratches or humming.

that was us on a good day for years (7.5km from exchange).

NBN is now in the 20's (still 1.7km copper from the node)

I still need to keep the ADSL as I have cameras that I access from outside (like running server, need static IP). If I get that, how do I hook it up to my home network so I have both connections?

    • Depends on your modem router, but most routers these days have a port to plug in a 4G wireless modem so that the wifi router can then use that connection as well as your ADSL one. But it depends on your router.

  • Found the Telstra mobile unlimited plan $199 a month that comes with an iPhone XR. This might work. I will need to check if the iPhone is locked or can be put on eBay. Then I need to research 4G modem and how to connect to my LAN!

    • Isn't that plan shaped after a certain amount of data?

      • Nope

You can order the iPhone xs max 512gb with that plan. Still $199

  • Better than mine.

NBN has acknowledged the problem and maintainence is scheduled.

2 back to back fortnight internet blackout. That's a month.

    I love our internet.

  • I complained about slow speeds to my ISP for years. No remedy.

Eventually my landline died so a technician turned up.

A fault in the street was found to blame and now my internet speed is five times faster.

    No compensation was given.

  • If I still plug the SIM in a 4G router and shared with other devices in my home WiFi, how can Telstra know that from me using the data on my mobile phone?

    • To connect to their network the device needs to send their IMEI.

  • I looked at OVO 250GB plan for $99 a month but a bit concerned about speed.
    I tried this at home:
My Galaxy S7 originally was Virgin Mobile, and now Optus. I ran speedtest tonight (Friday) repeatedly and it's only 3 to 5 Mbps
While a Telstra SIM in a TP-Link 4G modem steadily gave 55 to 67 Mbps
    Thoughts?
