For boys, a size 6 basketball should be used between the ages of 12 and 13.
For girls, a size 6 basketball […] is the official size used at the high school, college, and professional level.
Is this serious?
Not sure what you mean.
Females aged 12+ use a size 6.
males aged 14+ use a 7
As in - full grown, adult, professional women's basketball players use the same size ball as 12 and 13 year old boys?
yes, there is not much difference between a size 6 and 7.
When i play mixed basketball we use a 6, in mens we use a 7.
@Duff5000: If there really is "not much difference", you'd just use a size 7 for everything wouldn't you? Using 6 for mixed seems to make sense because there'd be women playing too though.
@HighAndDry: Mens hands are generally bigger, it makes sense.
@Tuftsdude: It does make sense I'm not really disputing that - I just didn't think it was so large a difference that professional women's ballers were playing with the same size ball as 12-13yo boys. I've watched a few WNBL/WNBA games, and okay, they're nowhere near the level of the mens counterpart leagues, but they were still serious ballers. I think they'd be able to handle using a size 7 ball…
@HighAndDry: Leave it. Your comments are dumb.
@nikoris: Does no one else find it surprising grown women are playing with the same sized basketballs as 12-13yo boys? I know this might seem like I'm trying to insult them, but 1. I'm honestly surprised, and 2. I feel whoever made that decision are the ones who were just a little condescending.
@HighAndDry: Men are on average stronger and larger than women. The ball is slightly larger and heavier (+10%)in mens. No big deal.
There is no doubt pro women could handle a size 7. The game just isn't played that way, the governing bodies deem that a size 6 works better for the women's comp.
Men are on average stronger and larger than women.
Sure, but I don't think enough to need a smaller/lighter ball. I mean, even you agree:
There is no doubt pro women could handle a size 7.
In any case, I'm not saying there's anything wrong with it, I was very literally saying that I was surprised by the fact. I don't think any other sport uses different sized balls, do they? Don't think it's the case in netball, soccer, water polo?
The game just isn't played that way, the governing bodies deem that a size 6 works better for the women's comp.
Again, not looking for a justification, just voicing surprise. (Though since you bring it up - the basketball hoop is the same size for both men's and women's right?)
@HighAndDry: Hand size to ball size changes how you control the ball. Larger ball is harder to control with smaller hands. It makes sense to use a smaller ball with on average smaller hands. A 5 foot tall woman doesn't use the same size bat in cricket as a 6 foot tall guy. (sure not exactly the same but it is pretty similar, the ball in basketball is the bit you manipulate, in cricket the bat.)
I am sure there are other sports that differ between sexes. Pretty sure javelin weights differ for example.
(Though since you bring it up - the basketball hoop is the same size for both men's and women's right?)
Actually that is one thing i have suggested i would like to see change. Personally i would like to see women play with a slightly lower ring. A ring height that the average pro woman player could dunk on. IMO it would make the womans game more interesting to watch.

See, this makes absolutely a lot of sense…. except for the fact that 14 year old boys start using a size 7 ball too. That's the part that has me scratching my head. Otherwise, yeah - guys have bigger hands, use a bigger ball. Pretty straight forward.

Oh yeah that's true - I think more dunks would make the women's game more interesting too. Have to be honest - I don't watch much basketball of either sex, but the highlights I do see do have a lot of dunks.
@HighAndDry: I'm High and Dry's side on this, but for different reasons.
On average, men are taller, heavier, stronger, and smarter than women.
But we aren't talking about average people. We're talking about athletes, people that are professional in this field. So a Size 7 Ball seems more fitting for both professional men's and women's games.
Otherwise, you inadvertently are saying the professional women's division isn't as capable as certain boy's division. And if untrue, it is condescending.

I never said anything about anyone's capability. Using a size 6 doesn't make you less capable. I use a size 6 when playing mixed. It is more suited to the average size of a female than the average size of a male. It really isn't a big deal.
At 14 i would have easily been taller than the majority (95%) of women. Makes sense to be starting using the mens competition ball around that age as by 16 you are often playing with adults anyway.
And if you must go there, Professional womens comp would struggle against a team of say 17 year old rep guys. That isn't condescending either, it is the reason we have different comps to start with.
@HighAndDry: Don't look at it that a size 7 is optimum for a 14 yo kid, it really isn't. It's optimal for an adult male - same I imagine the ABA deems a size 6 is optimal for an adult female.
I played bball all my life, and at 13 we were using a size 6 but everyone wanted to use a size 7 like the big kids. The reality was at 14 when we we 'finally' got to use a size 7 in competition everyone had fun cause we were playing the real game now but truth was most kids were still grossly under developed for it - 3 pointers were thrown with all your might and kids still had to jump to make the distance for a free throw.
I'd say the reasoning they do start using a size 7 at 14 is to get players used to the size and weight in their developing years and most kids won't actually handle a size 7 with good agility until they are around 16.
Re the athlete argument - there is no sport in the world where there's a different standard or rules between pro and amateur leagues. Same rules for everyone - well built athletes just have an advantage which is why they become pros.
To confuse the discussion even more FIBA 3x3 uses a size 6 (but size 7 weight) for all ages men and women.
@coblos: The size change i can deal with. The weight change is hard to switch back and forward between when you use a size 6 one night and a size 7 another in the same week.
so what's the equivalent to Spalding that are used in the NBA?
NBA use size 7, WNBA uses size 6.
If that isn't what you were asking can you reword your question?
is this an indoor or outdoor basketball ball?
This one is disposable quality, so outdoor is probably fine. It will deflate first.
Definitely an outdoor ball, but doesn't explode if you use it indoor.

Alrighty…
This is useful for playing basketball with friends or on your own.
Not really, pvc balls are trash. No grip, easily slip out of your hands.
Ah yes, I think I had a synthetic one once. The weird texture on my palm gave me the same weird feeling as fingernails on a chalkboard.
It's much easier to practice with a basketball.
Really slippery and really hard, they don't bounce well at all.
these are probably a better choice for a $5 ball. (just don't leave then in the sun, they will warp)

It's $5 for a reason, save your $5 and put it towards a rubber outdoor ball or a Spalding TF250.
Who doesn't fancy a slazenge now and then?
Wouldn't it actually be a 'Basketball ball'??
This is a good "go to" ball, it would be good for a family party or play in the parks.
I would recommend to look balls starting from $20, there are plenty to choose from. If you buy this, you would mostly not enjoy playing it:
Ie, Can't dribble, too slippery, squishy, can't shoot etc

Spend bit more it will last longer as well.
Now i need a cheap basketball ring
One of the kids turned up to training with this. It felt and played like medicine ball. No grip, hard as, poor rebound. Would not recommend this.
Bet you one of the kids outball you
So far not yet… But I'm having to train hard to keep up :)
*a medicine ball
It might be cheap, but it's hardly a ball worth buying that you would want to play with. Cheap isn't really value if it's kind of junk.
Sounds small. How big is it?
