  • How much is it locally?

  • +1

Wow, this is a whole new level of cheap. :o

    • It actually has been a little cheaper but with no games :) Here

    • +13

Brave new world when an almost $1k graphics card is cheap. It's a shame Nvidia has such a monopoly at the high end.

      • -6

In comparison to a heavy smoker / couple smokers = $1,500 a month, something that will give you at least 5 years of enjoyment I think is not too bad a deal.

        • +21

No that just shows that anyone who smokes is a crayon munching moron

          • @thearbiter117: Or really ridiculously rich. Hollywood actors all seem to smoke, but I guess they fit into both our categories!

            • @locknuts: They smoke because there’s a culture of it in Hollywood, dating back to the days where studios were paid by the tobacco companies to put smoking scenes in their films.

              • @[Deactivated]: Maybe, but I still think they would be chewing on crayons if they weren't so busy smoking cigarettes.

            • @locknuts: Hollywood does not have our tobacco tax.

        • It isn't that much.

The point here is that we're being ripped off thanks to the card having 2 fancy features 2 games (games most people won't play). They've effectively just -1'd the last gen and thrown in some faster VRAM and some fancy tech that isn't being used.

Nvidia had really better hope AMD don't have a high end with Navi, and that Navi screws up. Otherwise I don't think even Nvidia's mindshare will keep them at a GPU monopoly.

  • +1

Similar to the deal last time from PB Tech in NZ (via their eBay Store FutureGear)
Good card with quiet fan and good OC potential. Managed to get mine OCed to 2050MHz and during gaming can maintain 1950MHz.

I really don't understand the new import duty laws. It says the retailer "can" collect GST, but doesn't stipulate any necessity… Does the retailer just keep it? Are they obligated to pay that to the ATO? It's so unclear….

    https://www.abf.gov.au/buying-online/buying-online

    • This is interesting. Thanks for posting it.

For goods with a value of AUD1000 or less, there are generally no duties, taxes or charges to pay at the border.
However, From 1 July 2018, the Goods and Services Tax (GST) may be collected by overseas vendors of such low value goods when imported from overseas by consumers in Australia. GST will be charged at the point of sale and not at the border.

      • "may" be collected. Doesn't say "must"… brain freeze

    • +1

I'm not a tax lawyer (or any kind of lawyer for that matter) but:

Under law they do have to collect taxes on purchases from Australia and pay them to the ATO. That said, much like tax fraud in Australia, if you're not conducting business at a high enough volume it would likely go under the radar.

If they did catch wind that an overseas company was not collecting GST I don't think the ATO has the authority to audit to find the full scope (unless the company has an Australian business), but it certainly wouldn't be a good look—especially if they're publicly traded. I'm guessing they could ask customs to confiscate any shipments to Australia after that point, and/or collect tax at the border from the customer?

      • +4

Last time I checked Australian Law doesn't apply outside Australia.

        • +1

But us Australian consumers most certainly fall within Australian law.

          • @Michael15286: That is why the tax will be collected at the border.

            • +2

@daiwai: Correct. I have experience buying a 2080Ti from this exact shop 3 months ago.

B&H (this retailer) uses DHL has their shipping company.

When the product arrives in Australian shores, DHL will check if the taxes (GST) has been collected. If not, they will call you and ask you to pay the GST before they release the item.

              • +1

@reddead2067: This most likely wont happen if the declared value is under $1000, a 2080ti is certainly well above $1000.

              • @reddead2067: Are freight carriers obliged to collect GST? I thought is was only the sellers?
I think freight carriers may be obliged to collect customs/import duty?
Not sure on all this… just putting it out there.

    • +1

The reason for the ambiguous wording is because it all has to do with how much a company sells into Australia. In other words, if it’s a small business selling $5k worth of fishing reels per year for example, they are excluded from having to collect GST because the compliance cost will be too high.
However, if a company sells over $70k of goods into Australia annually, they are required under Australian law to collect GST and provide it to the ATO. B&H would likely fall into this category, as would Amazon and the like. The ATO has contacted companies that are required to pay GST and the big guys are all aware of their responsibilities.

Goods over $1000 AUD will continue to be taxed at the border by Customs, regardless of how much business a company does in Australia.

  • Time to upgrade my 1070 that I bought 2.5 years ago?

    • +1

      No.

Patience, 1070 is still awesome and when Navi comes out, Nvidia should reduce their prices… Should.

      • -6

"Patience, 1070 is still awesome and when Navi comes out, Nvidia should reduce their prices… Should."

Reasons like this, is why AMD wont produce high end GPUs… Loyalty remains with Nvidia IMO… Shame cause we need more competition..

        • +2

"Reasons like this, is why AMD wont produce high end GPUs… Loyalty remains with Nvidia IMO… Shame cause we need more competition.."

I'm an AMD fan, got one in my current PC, previous GPU was AMD crossfire, before that AMD, before that AMD. I'm just advising someone to wait.

        • +3

Can you comment on your Reddit post that I am an AMD fan owning numerous AMD cards and was advising someone to hold off purchasing a card now?

      • +6

@FabMan: lol, someone posted your comment to the AMD reddit.

        • Cheers, I am assuming it was the guy above.

          • -1

@FabMan: Honestly it wasnt me, i dont even have a reddit account. I wasnt having a go at you either, you took it too personally. It was a general statement, you'd also very well know Radeon 7 is around the corner 7/2 is the release date and the reddit post was posted 45 min before my reply.

      • Every time someone asks for advice on whether they should upgrade/buy a PC component, there's always someone telling them to wait.

Screw that, buy it now, enjoy it now. There's always something better/cheaper/faster/stronger on the horizon.

        • Very true, but 1070 is still pretty awesome, so its not like they are dealing with a 750Ti. 2080 just seems too expensive for my taste though, nearly a thousand dollars. Just because there is a new product, doesn't mean the one you have suddenly became rubbish or that the new one will offer significant benefits.

          • @FabMan: Yes, the 'RTaX' is a difficult pill to swallow, everyone has different needs though.

    • +1

      no

      • Thanks all. I’ll hold on for now then.

    • I would say no. I feel like upgrading should be the next 2 generations up, as i do wanna upgrade my aging 980 but can't afford an RTX 2080. Perhaps a 2060 will do.

      • I feel like I should upgrade too, but my 980 is still performing just fine. Can’t really justify it, especially with this lacklustre 20X0 series

        • +1

Sure is! It's actually only me getting ticked of by seeing Shadow of the Tomb Raider hovering at mid 50fps at High settings. It's still very playable, I just turn off that frame counter.

        • +1

980 is doing great. using driver 399, as drivers above 400 dont give me as good performance. I'll upgrade to the radeon VII if the reviews are good after a few weeks. Release is this Friday/Saturday.
Playing MGSV and it runs superb

    • +4

I also upgraded from 1070 2 months ago. I say if you have the money then it's worth every single penny at $900 (price I paid for 2080 new at that time, 1080ti used was around $800-$900, doh!). Performance increase is like +50% I finally can push 1440p 100fps at high/ultra settings, I couldn't believe how much did I miss. 1070 is very good for 1080p, but if you want to play games at 1440p, then the 2080 is a no-brainer. Tech price will always go down so if you hesitate you'll just forever wait for next gen. The 2080 will keep you happy gaming for a few years. At under $1000 and the fact that you can buy cheap freesync monitor, it's pretty reasonable, so why wait?

      • +1

THanks for this want to 4K gaming. 1070 does some older games at 4K but struggles newer games at 4K

        • +1

Then RTX 2080 is the right card to get! I'm playing on my 4K TV occasionally and the 2080 did a respectable job at keeping the frame rate steady at 60 in Witcher 3, FF XV and AC Odyssey (yeah I only play RPG). I do have to turn down a notch or 2 for some settings, but usually those don't have real visual impact or are undesirable anyway (like the volumetric cloud in AC Odyssey).

          • @Kingduytan: Thanks also Freesyc is available on the 2080 and not a 1070. Recently got a Samsung QLED TV has freesync. If it can run Witcher 3 at 4K then its the card to get!

            • +1

@Bid Sniper: Freesync IS available via the 1070.

And freesync from an Nvidia GPU is via displayport only, current Samsung TV's don't have displayport.

    • No I don't think so. I'm considering picking one up second hand in the low 300s… A solid card at a reasonable price. I'm waiting for navi, and will spend $500 on a major performance boost, but those second hand 1070s are the benchmark for me.

  • +1

Good price for the card and games. Good find!

  • +5

At $1000 for a graphics card you have to ask yourself what - does it spark joy?

    • No? Throw it away!

    • +2

Perhaps you should sieze and redistribute these bourgeois cards, comrade.

    • dunno about joy but evga have been known for sparking flames

    • How's the spring cleaning / sorting going?

  • +11

Not sure if you are a gamer but that feeling you get when you unbox a new powerhouse graphics card and you can't wait to install it. After you install the first thing you normally do is run benchmarks. When we see the final result with high FPS the feeling we get is indescribable. We then quickly install a game so we can run an FPS software to see how it performs and again we feel joy when the result says 120 FPS on ultra high settings with 1440p/144mhz. After a few days of doing this over and over again and then reality sets in an we think damn I just spent a $1000.

    • +4

      Those few days though……

    • +9

after i kept doing that, i realised i was more into running benchmarks, constantly tweaking, than playing games.

    • +1

And after these few day I start playing oxygen not included and thinking "what have I done".

    • +1

      Lol… Nailed it.

  • I think customs will hold onto it until you pay import duty if it is over 800 odd dollars. I copped it once before in the past, and it wasnt cheap. Probably cheaper to source locally

    • Was the purchase from B&H?

  • Just looked it up. Providing total cost including post is under 1000 there is no duty to pay.

  • Sweet as. Finally time to upgrade the ol'faithful GTX970. Hopefully I can pick up a few bucks re-selling it.
Anyone have any thoughts on what a MSI GTX 970 LE 100ME would go for these days?

    • +1

      $200-$250

      • +1

        200 - 250.. you're dreaming.

You can get a brand new ASUS RX 570 Strix 4GB for 191.00 delivered, and that will starch the GTX 970

        I'd guesstimate a figure $130 - $150 max

        • +1

just sold my regular MSI 970 for $200 a month ago, and OP's is one of the limited editions which could make it (albeit slightly) more valuable. i see plenty of decent models (asus, gigabyte) going for $150-$200 all the time on ocn and gumtree

          • @Stew-y: Thanks for the feedback guys. Doesn't hurt to start high. I'll give $200 a crack and see where I land.

  • Still a solid 0% upgrade in price to performance from a GTX 1080ti, but thats a lot better than on release where it was like a 25%+ regression. Plus it is for an EVGA model and with 2 games so overall its a decent deal. I am interested to see how far down these will go.

  • I have a 1080 Ti - any reason for me to swap for this?

    • Ray tracing and a few -100$s?

      • I wouldn't buy this for ray tracing. The performance hit to fps is not worth turning it on… Or so the reviews say.

    • literally none. same performance.
Wait until next gen RTX3080 or 3080ti (or AMD eqivalent)

  • Price gone up by US$20 so I expired the deal. Price just comes under AU$1000 and is still available.

    • Seems to be in stock cheaper at (USD $689.89) (AUD $951.84), might want to change to active and change prices to reflect.

  • Good card, I paid 850 all together for this for that nz deal, (15% new ebay plus members and ebay gift cards) although didnt come with games

    • did you try to redeem the code by registering - https://www.evga.com/articles/01295/game-on/ ?

      • I didnt get a code o.O? where might i find it?

        Edit:

        Q. Where do I get my promotion code, if I did not buy my graphics card from the EVGA.com online store?

                • @Zabuza: ill try that too but they will probably just say they dont have any. wonder if they just used the codes themselves or sold them lol.

                        • @Zabuza: upload your paypal invoice. thats what i just did. says "request" and allow for 5 business days for confirmation!

                          • @SardineHead: it looks like a different page to the one you linked and paypal receipt? would that be enough in the thing it says it must show the evga sticker

                          • @SardineHead: Mine says this when i uploaded,

"For security reasons we do not show your invoice here. If you see this message, we have successfully received your invoice for this product."

Seems like we uploaded in different sections?
