What to Do with Myki Found on Road?

I found a myki on my way to work near a trash can. Being the cheap ozbargainer I am i picked it up and had to first thoroughly clean it due to the dirt sticking on it.

Then I first wanted to see if it was registered. trying to register allowed me to, so I didn't register, but now I knew that whoever lost the card cannot do anything about it.

My next step was to find out if there is a large balance in which case I can try to post it here/Whirlpool to return to rightful owner. Going to a kiosk I found that the card had -2.40 in balance but touched off (important point)

So, I threw it into the recycle bin. But now, I'm thinking that if I charge it for $2.5 (technically $2.41) I can touch on once and travel for exactly 1 time. I am scared whether it would be allowed as the myki goes into negative, but per rules I should be able to do it. So, that nets me a gain of $4.4 - $2.5 = $1.9

So, my question is should I do a dumpster dive and retrieve the card for this? (the recycle bin is full and the myki is at the very top, so easily retrievable). I need an answer fast because the recycle bin would be taken tomorrow by council

TL;DR - found myki with $-2.4 balance. Should I charge it for $2.5 and use it once to gain a profit of $1.9?

    What a large post.
Do you have a use for the card? If so, use it.
If not, try to give it to someone who can.

Don't throw it out, that's wasteful.
If you don't have a use for it, leave it back for someone who can use it. Leave it at a train station or bus stop.
Even though it has a negative balance, it would be cheaper to use that card than to buy a new one.

is a myki another word for a joint?

To answer your question about the validity of a fare without enough funds to cover it, you are fine as long as you travel only in zones 1 and/or 2 (metropolitan Melbourne).

I'm thinking that if I charge it for $2.5 (technically $2.41) I can touch on once and travel for exactly 1 time.

Technically $2.40 actually. After topping up that amount, you will be able to touch on (which requires a balance of $0.00 or higher) and make exactly one journey - this is one reason why cards have a $6 fee. To be more precise, you will be able to ride either of:

    • One tram; or
    • One bus; or
    • One contiguous trip on the metropolitan train network (e.g. Camberwell to South Yarra with an interchange at Richmond, provided you do not leave the station)

for a period of time up to 2 hours.

When you touch off or next attempt to touch on (in the case where you do not touch off), the fare will be deducted and your balance will be negative.

Note: A myki without enough funds to cover the entire trip is not valid in regional Victoria (i.e. V/Line).

  • troll post? Fashion the card in to a shiv and sell it at your local prison, you'll make more money.

  • “Investor found in the back of a garbage truck. The investor had been dumpster diving for negative balance myki cards. The investor would pay to bring the negative balance up to zero balance. So far they have been honourable by refunding the state government the balance of the last trip. However their intention to use the ticket again with a zero balance for a free trip for their profit is not. If only their talent had been used for good instead of evil.” 😃

If you keep diving (in the dumpster), maybe you'll find another card with $5.

    Put it in the ATM.

    • not sure I understand

Don't do it otherwise next month we'll end up with a riviting thread about what to do with a myki card that has a negative balance of $4.40.

  • I don't think you can recharge it for less than the minimum fare?

Register it to your account and keep it as a emergency spare in case you even lose or misplace yours - saves you having to make a trip to the train station/ticket counter. You could leave it at negative balance and only recharge when/if you needed it in an emergency.

You've already saved $6 for the card.
Keep it for when you have visitors.

OP is considering doing a dumpster dive for potential savings of (what he thought was) $1.90. Waiting until he has visitors might be a long while…
