Free Hot Roast Chicken @ Coles if Hot Box Is Empty (Selected Stores/Times)

1852

Read an article on news.com.au exposing a 'Secret Hack' to get a free Hot Roast Chicken from Coles.

Selected stores have a sticker (see photo in link) on the hot chicken cabinet that states:
"If you’ve missed out on a Coles hot roast chicken from 11am to close, your next one is free"

  • Cough on all of them….. after you open all the bags

I don't like the way roast chicken tastes at Coles or Woolies they taste plain and metallic but for free I will eat it.

    • It's the same as a chicken from a chicken store

  • If the chicken was cooked over 4 hours ago and is still full price, you can ask the staff to reduce the price.

    • That's actually not right. If it has been in the warmer for over 4 hours it cannot be sold at all. If someone is marking down after four hours they are in wrong. Mark downs usually happen between 2.5-3.5 hours after cook, UNLESS there aren't that many, in which warmer they just get left at full price and shredded for the case once 4 hours is up.

      • Interesting how this is your first comment on Ozbargain.

Both Woolies and Coles have chickens at my local for more than 4 hours. Sure, they are reduced a bit (not even that much) but it happens daily.

Funnily enough, they never seem to last that long in Sydney so not sure about the 4 hour rule there.

I have a feeling if I said you can't sell this after 4 hours, they'd kindly tell me to f-off.

Not sure why it's interesting, it's the first post I've seen since joining where I actually have some experience and thus can give some insight.

I can't speak for Woolies, but I actually work in a Coles deli, and our manager/store manager/support manager/duty manager all say they cannot be sold after 4 hours, I can understand some managers may do a dodgy and still sell them after 4 hours, but we are specifically told it is not allowed.
We mostly don't mark down unless we have A LOT because after the 4 hour mark they just come out, get shredded, and get sold the next day in the cold meat section.

  • Few holes in this.

It's not if the box is empty, because the box can be empty by chickens still cooked in their little oven - they'll just give you one of them. Or if it's nearly cooked you'll just get told to wait.

Secondly, it's your next chicken that's free. Which who knows how they'll measure this. They give you your free chicken coupon or whatever and then (according to a mate) doesn't work in "peak times or public holidays".

Different times in each store btw. My local is only until 6pm.

You need to wait, buy one and get the "NEXT one FREE".

    • So what’s the reason for your neg? Do you need a link to the voting guidelines?

      • +2

Because there is no obtainable deal. Just a marketing trick.

  • Coles are you trying to make me go to Coles to find "free" chickens

  • +1

If you live in the country it's more likely you will get the free chickens, the workers are nicer.

  • Got free chicken at the north sydney store. They removed the sticker a few weeks later. Not cool <.<

Got one voucher today as I heard one lady was asking in the line so I went along to the cashier and she just gave me a voucher…

I work at coles, this has been a policy at all stores for years now, you should also not that conditions apply eg. if we have chickens coming out the oven in the next 59 minutes you will be told to wait, if we have an alternative product then you will be given it at a matched price. Vouchers also expire 7 days after issue and are only granted within trading hours so if you hang around in-store past 5pm on a saturday, even though the doors are still open you will not be given a voucher as it is past closing

    • +7

You seriously tell customers to wait 59 minutes?

      That is ridiculous.

      • I do not because I make sure there are chickens when I am there however i cannot speak for my coworkers. Bearing in mind Deli workers get in trouble with management if they give away any vouchers

    • Do you habe a lounge area where people can put their feet up, watch some down down ads on the telly and wait?

  • What if there’s one chicken left but I need two? Or two left but I need three??? I am missing out, give free chooken pls

    /invincible logic

  • not so much a deal but a comment - my wife hates the idea that chickens may have been sitting in the warmer for 3-4 hours. She will ring ahead to the supermarket, ask what time they are planning to put out new chooks, and then ask for one of those to be reserved, and we will pick up as close to prep time as is possible.

      Supermarkets love her.

    • You're a lucky man.

  • This happened at my local coles and they were participants as there were signs everywhere. I asked the person at the deli, he had no clue and sent me to the front desk. I went to the front desk and they said they had no idea and had to get a manager. I waited a good 5 minutes before I walked out, left my groceries. I messaged Coles to enquire and they gave me some BS response…

Queanbeyan coles doesn't have the sticker

  • Seems like a lot of trouble to go through just for a chicken. In any event i find the supermarket chickens to be exceptionally soggy. Not a pleasant chicken experience.

  • Don't Bother with Coles PORT MELBOURNE -
Went there and they had no chicken left and well over one hour until chicken would be ready. There were 4 to 5 people crowded around the ovens for training or something and the girl working there told me to go to customer service desk for a voucher (I didn't even ask her about the voucher either) and the customer service desk guy 'Mitch' and his female colleague at service desk had no idea what i was talking about and 'Mitch' went to the Deli manager to confirm who advised no such thing. He then told me I needed to wait over an hour for the chicken to ready. Waste of time.

  • I got one tonight! The policy in this store was until closing time.

  • Told this promotion ended due to panic by shoppers.
