eBay Buyer Has Different Postal Address Location

I am selling an item on eBay, it's up for buy it now/ best offer. I received an offer $5 below my list price and on the offer it said the person was located in a suburb in NSW. I accepted the offer but the buyers actual address is in Tasmania, and as a result the postage costs have jumped quite a bit. Is this ok? Do i just have to suck it up and send it to Tasmania?

Was it listed as free shipping in Australia?

    • yeah it was. feel kinda stupid for posting this now haha. definitely have to send it. Thanks for the response though

      • No worries. When I'm making an offer, if it shows free postage I don't bother including my postcode. If there's a separate postage fee, then I make sure to include my postcode when making an offer.

        • yeah i think it just threw me off expecting a NSW address and getting a TAS one.

  • Just make sure you ship the goods to the address recorded on the eBay account

    • yeah i print my postage labels through eBay so i don't have to worry about addresses and seller protection etc. Makes it easier with the automatic tracking numbers and everything anyway

i thought it was PayPal account. ebay account can be different. whatever it says on the paypal email, because you won't get paypal protection if its not sent to that address.

double check with buyer via ebay messaging system (those messages are recorded, so if future problems you can verify)

i recently sent something and he wanted me to send to his work, i said i couldn't, he said ok, package delivered and got feedback so transaction closed.

on the offer it said the person was located in a suburb in NSW. I accepted the offer but the buyers actual address is in Tasmania,

Seems like the address on the offer, should be their actual address.

I more than 1 address added on my ebay account (due to buying gifts, and adding recipient of gift address). Being so close to Christmas, I would send them a message (always only communicate through ebay message system) and ask for confirmation on address, could even explain the situation and that offer was listed as NSW, and postage to taz is much more. Don't tell them you won't send it, just mention what has happened, they may offer to pay the extra postage if they think that is fair.

Depending on value of item ? And how much the extra postage difference is ? That would effect my decision here. Ie. If its $500 item, and $10 postage difference, I personally would just happily cop that small loss, considering value of item. If I sold a $20 item, and postage changed from $8 to $25, that would be more of an issue to me, because it means I would have rathered keep the item than sell for $3 ($20+$8 minus the $25) .

    • I'm assuming that the buyer didn't type "btw I'm in Sydney". Rather, eBay is displaying the address they have on file (or part of it at least) to the seller, which the buyer has no idea about.

This caught me out a few times when I would make an offer; I'd get a reply stating they don't ship to the US (it was a US eBay account). I learned to add a "btw I'm in Australia, postcode XXXX" in the message until I got a separate AU eBay account.

If I'm wrong and the buyer did in fact state in their own words that they were in a certain suburb in NSW, I'd tell them that the offer was contingent on that. But if it's eBay trying to be "helpful" then I'd suck it up and just ship it.

yeah this is what happened. Basically the offer came through and ebay autofills with certain info i guess, so it had offer of $xx to "buyer name" located in "suburb name" NSW. it was a $50 item that is 2kg or so so the shipping went up $9 but it wasn't as much as i thought it would be so no harm no foul.

          $9 lesson. Bargain!

Always ship to the address on the paypal receipt ;)

  • cancel sale, there is an option for seller address differs

  • That post code on offer as you experience not necessarily the same post code on shipment. If it matter for you, you should have included it in offer term. So on receipt of offer, you counter with note NSW address.

    • But there was no indication that the buyer wasn't in nsw when i acccepted the offer. so i only found out the person was in tas when ebay had his paypal address listed after i had committed to the sale and received payment.

      • either suck it up (i've done this before for $2-3 where i've misunderestimated the postage) or refund and relist with accurate postage

i just set a flat rate now and make it higher than actual postage cost from AP quote. covers the paypal fees.\

depends on whether you can be bothered relisting

there's also losing that promo if you had it listed on that for zero fees.

and the fact the buyer probably won't buy from you again (same item)
