Home Security Screens

Hi All,

I've tried to look at some past posts in regards to security screens but found mostly posts about alarms. Apologies if I have missed a post already discussing this.

I'm curious to know how many of you have security screens installed in most windows at home.

I'm currently building a new house and want to put security screens on all my windows. I've spoken to a few people and they seem to think it's waste of time and to invest in alarms/cameras (which I intend to anyway).

I have 2 modern full length windows in my living area and to be honest, I don't want a security screen to limit the view and aesthetics in these or any other windows in the house.

Just interested to know the general consensus on security screens and how useful everyone finds them.

Worth installing?

Cheers!

  • I think they're worth as it obviously provides more security than fly screens. For aesthetics and cost reasons, we put the traditional security screens on bedrooms and other windows that can't be seen from the street (except small windows at the front of the house) and put an imitation cheaper Crimsafe on living area windows and sliding doors. It may even be worth putting a Crimsafe screen door on the front door to let the breeze through on warm days (we didn't do the latter but will probably do it soon).

  • As a deterrent - noise and need for tools / time barrier - yes , but if someone wants in they will find a way .

If concerned about the windows how about roller shutters and keep them down when not home ?

  • +1

Waste of time and money. Plus makes your house feel like a prison.

  • I don't know if its worth it or not.

But some people subscribe to the theory if someone want to get in , they will get in no matter what you install.

And others like me are more in the camp of it being a deterrent. (ie. If your more difficult than your neighbours then its less likely they will target you)

The most effective security is probably a dog.

Back to topic, I got prowler proof 316L mesh find it very good so far. Very clean install , no issues with the product itself. I opted for forcefield because its much better than fly screens with diamond grille. Hate diamond grille.

In any case . Had 25 windows and SD doors done. Roughly $8K , I thought it was quite cheap.

note I actually got them for looks and having a breeze 24/7.

    • Did you install it yourself? If not, which agency did you go with and how long back was this?

  • Depends on which suburb your windows are located and how well you're insured.

In the city, I'd get some sort of security screen for any openings simply because I'm not home much and there's no neighbourly protection (friendly neighbours but they're not enough to deter thugs).

Country house, I wouldn't bother. If the burglars are caught by myself or neighbours, there would be nowhere to go and no one to help them. If no one is around, the burglars could fire up an angle grinder and have their way anyway.

To me, it doesn't matter either way. I'm insured and if someone tried to break in, it would be as inconvenient to me as if they'd succeeded. Gotta dust for prints, search local criminal database, sharpen the axe… dig…
