Best tasting rice are from Thailand and Cambodia
The brand or the actual rice?
The actual rice; it's now made in Cambodia
A variety of countries including Australia, but the lack of rain will cause shortages of Australian rice
@mrtin: The 2kg one from Coles for $5 is Australian grown. The Woolies 1kg for $3.20 is too I think. The 5kg is not any more, and I personally believe they won't onshore the 5kg bag again.
@mrtin: Zero water allocation is destroying farms and rural communities. Taking 2750 gigalitres and sending it down the river and out to sea is the major reason rice crops have not been planted. Rice mill shut down is next on the cards.
@heal: And the price of water has gone crazy. For some farmers it would have been more profitable planting nothing and just onselling their water on the temporary market. Sad hey.
Nope I just called them. Its from Australia.
You sure? It says Made in Cambodia on the product page (others said the smaller packs are made in Australia)
Weird as. The SunRice website says that they are Australia produced, buy the Woolies product page says that it is from Cambodia.
@osaya: It's made in Cambodia.
Source: bought them today and it says on the back on the left hand side
@kerfuffle: I believe they have rice farms around the world
@mrtin: Well obviously, but the point of my comment was to correct ozbar in saying that they were from Australia when they aren't …
@kerfuffle: try calling them yourself if you don't believe me.
@ozbar: I don't need to call them up; I can just look at my 5kg bags of rice at home that says Made in Cambodia.
@kerfuffle: if that is the case then obviously no point in selecting Sunrice over other brands.
Looking at stocking up on bulk rice, what's the best to go for? Is this any decent? For example Coles is selling Maharajah’s Choice Basmati Rice 5kg this week for a similar price, which is better?
They are completely different rice. Depends what you serve with it.

Both the Maharaja & Sunrice are at the lower end of rice quality / price spectrum.
Basmati rice is when you want each grain to stick out and it has its own distinct aged smell.
Jasmine rice is when you want the grains to clump together
When the price is rice sunglasses
Come on down!
I've tried both and Koala is a better quality of jasmine rice.
I found a sizeable piece of gravel in a Koala rice bag. Granted that was more than a decade ago.
wow, did you tell them??
I can't remember, but probably did. I will usually let companies know about any quality control issues.
Is Koala jasmine rice. Product of Australia?
I think for jasmine rice, I find Thailand’s brands (can buy at asian grocery) have better aroma and texture. But this price beats it.
How do you store that amount without getting dreaded pantry moths all over it?
Asian stores sell cookies that come in giant aluminium tin cans. Get the one that doesn't require a spoon to open. They work wonders for keeping moths out of your rice.
We have a couple of those cheap plastic crates with lids that can take around 5-6 bags of rice.
You can buy them pretty much anywhere, but here's what I'm talking about for $6 at Bunnings
https://www.bunnings.com.au/all-set-50l-plastic-storage-tub-…
Pantry moths would go through that like $hit through a goose.
store em in 4lb protein containers
10-15L food-grade buckets:
https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Plastic-Bucket-with-Lid-Buckets-…
Thanks, that looks like a good solution. What size bucket would fit a 5kg bag?
10L is fine for a 5KG bag. We use 6 (3x2 stacks) to store differing varieties of rice & flour.
I fill up some in a container and put the rest tied up probably and put inside a suitcase so no moths can get in. I used to have problem with it even without opening the bag.
anyone know what happened to their Brown Jasmine rice variant? that was absolutely awesome but they don't seem to be sold anywhere anymore. :(
Agree! That was a fine middle ground between brown for the parents and white for the kids. Have not seen it lately.
I miss it as well! does not appear to be made anymore, was my favourite rice by far!
What's worse is I've been to Asian and Indian grocers and none seem to stock this kind of rice, can't find anything sold in Australia on Google, how could this be?!
Does anyone know where you can find Brown Jasmine Rice??
OR at least something close, like what is medium grain brown rice like? Similar?
Just a heads up that I saw the same rice on sale for $8.50 at my local IGA. May be more convenient for some people 😁
Good price. It is no longer Australian rice for those who did not know.
