Changing Airlines at Hong Kong Airport

Hi all,

I thought would take advantage of the Virgin Airlines sale for a cheap fare to Hong Kong and then taking the flight out to my intended destination with Cathay. I have previously transited through HK but it has always been with the same airline so baggage is automatically put on the next flight.

As I am booking this myself (and it't not a code share arrangement), it seems I will have to first pick up my bags from the Virgin flight and then re-check them in for my Cathay outbound flight. Have done a bit of research and it's unclear if I have to first pick up the Cathay tickets on landing from a transit desk. Also wondering how long I need to take into account for picking up bags and checking them in again.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Regards
Sean

  • You shouldn't have to collect tickets or anything like that. Everything is digital now. Take a hard copy of your reservation on your trip and you'll be fine.

You will need to do Immi >> Collect your luggage (incase of checked in)>> check in your luggage with Cathay>>do security/immi again…have at least 2 hours in hand assuming minimal delays to your flight into HKG…

Recently did 1hr layover in HK, and that was with the same airline and only just made it AND we had someone escort us through the airport.. id imagine a minimum of 2hrs

Clear immigration, clear customs, buy duty free, collect bags, exit, sell duty free at 100% markup to a taxi driver, go to the departure section and go to Cathay line and checkin

    • Hong Kong is a duty free port. The taxi driver can buy it cheaper at Mongkok.

  • Thanks all for the comments. I have 8 hours between flights (if not delayed in Melbourne) so I think I will be OK.
