15 Hour Transit at Shanghai Pudong International Airport

Hi fellow Ozbargain members,

I am traveling to Europe in July-August this year via China Eastern Airlines (ex Melbourne).

On my journey back I have a stopover at Shanghai Pudong International Airport for 15 hours.

My flight will reach the airport at 4:20 a.m in the morning and the flight back to Melbourne is at 8:05 p.m (transit time 15h 45 mins) the same day.

I have contacted a handful of hotels in Shanghai (including the hotel at the airport) and all of them have a check-in time of 14:00 and are not very flexible (I had a very hard time communicating with them as well due to their english skills). I have also contacted the airline who have advised that my ticket does not include a hotel although the stay is more than 15 hours.

I am traveling with my wife and my daughter (8 yrs) and happy to fork out money for a hotel but because of the hotels check in and check out times I am having a hard time finding a hotel.

I would appreciate if my ozbargain fellow members can give me some ideas that would assist me.

Thanks in advance.

  • Booked hotel room one day before maybe, most of the hotels over there, especially near the airport have got 24/7 reception available. So you will be able to check in without any issue. Hopefully it helps.

    • If I book the night before, the check out time is 10 a.m. By the time I reach the hotel it will be 6 a.m and I will have to vacate the hotel by 10 a.m.

      • Book 2x nights he is saying

        • I was contemplating that but booking 2 nights for essentially a 12 hour stay at the hotel doesn't seem viable to me.

          • @Arsi: Kind of sucks but really only option. For that hotel at least

  • I found this site, but cannot vouch for the accuracy:

I assume that you are looking for somewhere to nap and shower initially, and then go out and explore a little of Shanghai. Booking the night before arrival might be necessary. Make sure you have the applicable visas, and understand how that works with your luggage.

Even with, say, 5 hours use of the hotel room, and allowing for plenty of time to re-check in at the airport later, that leaves plenty of time to explore the Bund and a few other areas near there.

There are hotels accepting hourly stay (hourly room?). e.g. 2 hours, 4 hours and 6 hours. I think it's originated from Japan/Hong kong/Singapore etc where couples are forced to live with parents and want to have a good time ;) I had experience in Singapore before during a transit. You basically just walk in and ask for the number of hours you want to stay during their operating hours.
Here is the search term in Chinese 上海浦东机场 钟点房 (Shanghai Pudong airport, hourly room). If you google it you should see a list of hotels. Sorry I am at work can't help you further.

    • Thanks. Having a look now. Much appreciated

Is it for sleep or just shower? Priority Pass has a lounge with shower in the terminal.

I used the time to get the Metro into the city, walked the Bund, then shopping, and then out to the Maglev back to the airport.

    • this.

and then you'll sleep on the plane.

  • Does China Eastern offer free accommodation for stop over of more than 8 hrs? It is mandatory in some countries.

    • I have contacted China Eastern but they have advised that my tickets are not eligible for accommodation as they were issued from Europe.

I bought the tickets from gotogate website.
