Free Database of Publically Accessible Fruit Trees

Moved to Forum: Original Link

I came across this website whilst trying to find some olive trees in my area.

The organisation has an app but the website is free to use.

Enjoy!

About the project

Falling Fruit is a celebration of the overlooked culinary bounty of our city streets. By quantifying this resource on an interactive map, we hope to facilitate intimate connections between people, food, and the natural organisms growing in our neighborhoods. Not just a free lunch! Foraging in the 21st century is an opportunity for urban exploration, to fight the scourge of stained sidewalks, and to reconnect with the botanical origins of food.

Our edible map is not the first of its kind, but it aspires to be the world's most comprehensive. While our users contribute locations of their own, we comb the internet for pre-existing knowledge, seeking to unite the efforts of foragers, foresters, and freegans everywhere. The imported datasets range from small neighborhood foraging maps to vast professionally-compiled tree inventories. This so far amounts to 2,705 different types of edibles (most, but not all, plant species) distributed over 1,430,910 locations. Beyond the cultivated and commonplace to the exotic flavors of foreign plants and long-forgotten native plants, foraging in your neighborhood is a journey through time and across cultures.

Join us in celebrating hyper-local food! The map is open for anyone to edit, the database can be downloaded with just one click, and the code is open-source. You are likewise encouraged to share the bounty with your fellow humans. Our sharing page lists hundreds of local organizations - planting public orchards and food forests, picking otherwise-wasted fruits and vegetables from city trees and farmers' fields, and sharing with neighbors and the needy.

Seem's to be just dumpster locations in my area. Not sure what that says about where I live.

There's a lot of waste in your area?

    searching for marijuana plants …….

    • 1 cannabis in Israel

      • would not risk going there, they bomb innocent people

        • Yeah, those Palestinians keep sending RPGs in with no regard for where they're aiming.

          • @[Deactivated]: Yeah, at least Israeli soldiers are nice enough to aim for doctors when they fire.

            • @kahn:

              …aim for doctors…

              Source?

The Israeli army targets government buildings and even air drops leaflets before an airstrike so everyone can evacuate first, and this is only in retaliation to the barrage of RPGs indiscrimately fired into Israel.

              • @[Deactivated]: Search "israeli snipers shooting medics". That's only one example of the inhumane acts committed by the IDF. There's lots of neutral/factual information out there if you care about the subject. Also, there's a documentary featuring former IDF soldiers.

                • @kahn: Before I search it up, did I wonder if we're talking about a soldier in the IDF allegedly aiming to kill medics or the IDF ordering the shooters to kill the medics specifically?

Vs the number of RPGs fired into Israel.

                  • @[Deactivated]: I don't know what distinction you're trying to make with the IDF snipers. I also don't know if you have much knowledge about the decades-long conflict given that you seem to focus on Palestinian resistance to the Israeli occupation and rule by force. Is there anything that the IDF has done that you wouldn't automatically justify somehow?

                    • @kahn: There is no justification to killing an innocent bystander.

You are referencing an IDF soldier firing into a protesting crowd and fatally wounding a person who happens to be a medic and you're making it sound like the IDF ordered an operation exclusively targetting medics.

The IDF personal is now being investigated.

What happens to a palestenisn whose RPG makes it past the Iron Dome? (It's a rhetoric in case anyone is wondering. He is celebrated or considered a martyr if dead).

                      • @[Deactivated]: You would have to be pretty naive to think it was unintentional. People in power often do crazy things like this because they have dehumanised their targets and do not fear any consequences. It was only a single example of the many times Israeli forces have abused their power. It should not be surprising that things like this happen when you have a huge imbalance of power. It can happen in almost any country, where the weak are annoying the powerful.

                        • @kahn: What you provided isn't an example, it is a wild claim that a soldier was ordered specifically to snipe medics in a protesting crowd where the protestor's occupations were not known. You've made an absurd claim.

And the RPGs fired by Palestine, you don't seem to like commenting about those. I guess they're an accident?

Ps. It is not Israeli occupation when the land belongs to them.

                          • @[Deactivated]: OK, mate, it's absurd to claim Israeli snipers take out Palestinian civilians with impunity but totally believable that it was an accident. Yeah, it's also true that Palestinian land actually belongs to Israelis. Totally objective assessment of the situation there, well done!

                            • @kahn: I never claimed it was an accident unless you have a source? So far you make many claims, all baseless.

And still no acknowledgement of Palestinian indiscriminate discharge of RPGs into Israel.

        Well, that escalated quickly

  • sorry I'm a noob and I've never done this before.
Just to clarify, you can literally go to any of the addresses that pop up and just pick off their trees?

    • Yep.
The map tells you if the fruit is in a public area or overhanging from somebody garden into the street.
If the tree is planted in somebody's garden you might want to knock on their door and ask permission before picking. But if the tree is on the sidewalk, it is free for all.

      • So is it mainly for those really small sour plums?
Any success stories with this service?

      • alley property, beech!

        • Unless a squirrel, slim pickin' of anything tasty from a beech, tree, outlander… :)

          Besides…
          Artist's impression?

She a possible relative of yours, of course.. ;)

Fast cash is better than a big discount on something you don't need

Beyond pure savings, I seem to recall you getting a bit preppery there at one point, so maybe should be aware of that?

          Mmmm…
Worms (some, if lucky, in free fruit) w/ mac and cheese. Sorted!

            • @outlander: A brief emergence from undergrowth, as just indicated to someone else.

              Good evening, badgeworthy one.
              :)
