Gaming Console for an Airbnb

Hi Guys,

I'm looking to add a console to an Airbnb I manage for the guests. The property is solely an Airbnb listing, no one lives at the property ongoing. It's an addition probably aimed more at entertaining the kids.

Which console do you recommend? The property has NBN via Satellite so online gaming isn't really an option. latency and data limits do limit this.

I was thinking of getting maybe 10 games to start, looking for older games to keep costs down. Which are the must haves that will be suitable for all ages? and maybe the odd obscure game that a guest may not have played before?

I'm leaning Switch, but have no idea. The last consoles I had were the Wii and the 360.

I did ponder a MAME cabinet, but the costs can add up.

Cheers

EDIT:

Thanks Guys for feedback.

Went with an Arcade Cabinet.

and a pool/air hockey table

and also grabbed a basketball game thing you see in the arcades (cheapie) and a dart board.

Done I reckon.

  • I have a PS3 in an Airbnb and I'm certain it doesn't get used. I wouldn't waste your money to be honest.

I provide a Chromecast in the rest of my Airbnbs and that's it. No netflix, stan etc. I've had positive comments from the Chromecast and no negative comments regarding Netflix etc. Most people who want it would have their own account and can use the Chromecast.

Put money into wifi, it would suck to rent a place without it.

  • Id definitely avoid the Switch. Way too easy for kids to drop, scratch the screen or take somewhere and lose it. And very expensive.

Id just get one of those Super Nintendo Classic mini consoles. Cheap, robust and would be a bit of a novelty for kids.

  • Forget about a console. Too much upkeep, and children will have their own devices (iPads, phones) if they want to play games. If you really want, leave some nice family boardgames, puzzles, books.

If you want to pay money, a Netflix subscription is great. I have always had positive feedback from guests who have used it. It helps that Sony TV's have a huge NETFLIX button on the remote.

I vote the SNES mini with controllers attached to the console and games built in would be harder for things to go missing or be damaged. Avoid any console with discs children don’t handle them properly. The switch games are really small so can get lost so I would definitely not get a switch.

A mini SNES or something like that would be fine in my opinion. Doesn't need to be over the top. I think you're asking for trouble if you buy one of the current gen consoles (stolen etc)

  • I'd put a Mini SNES or Mini NES or even a Sega-Megadrive-Classic. All are simple no internet required devices that have a selection of games that are single player and/or two players. They all cost roughly close to $100 so if they get broken stolen no huge issue. They all have wired controllers so there is no losing the controllers and they all consume bugger all power.

    • 100% this.

    • I'm speaking for myself specifically, but have noticed others seem to feel the same way too on a holiday.

Having an old/classic console like this is quite enjoyable when you're relaxing on a holiday. The nostalgia trip is great.

Having said that, younger generations weren't brought up with consoles like this, and the graphics/gameplay may not be what they're used to and they might find it a bit boring. Thankfully my 4yo enjoys playing them (although gets frustrated) and we can play together quite easily.

  • I would simply provide WiFi and a HDMI cable with amble power outlets.

  • Get a used Wii U. Cheap and plenty of games.

  • PS4 or XBOX one. HAve digital copies so that games don't go missing

  • dont do it. you will only regret.

  • I am renting an Airbnb in Melbourne next month.Took me ages to pick out the one that's suitable.Eventually I was swayed with the one that offered cheese, wine and the host offering to collect us from the nearest tram.It also helped that it looks clean and well kept and the reviews are good.
