Replacement (Front) Bumper Has Different Colour

Hi everyone,

I want to replace my current (front) bumper which lost all the tap rings. The problem is I couldn't find one with my car colour (called multiple scrap yards). My car is maroon/red and available bumper is white. So my questions are:

  1. Is it illegal to have bumper of different color?
  2. If it's not illegal, do people judge you on this? Does it attract attentions on the roads ?
  3. If it's white, can you paint red/maroon on top of it without scraping the exiting color.

My alternative option is to buy a band new one (black) and paint it. However it will cost me 4 times as much as the one from scrap yard.

Thanks

UPDATE : Thanks for all inputs, I decided to get the second hand one and will repaint it.

I spent 14 years in fed max doing hard labour because I was a different coloured bumper.

It is celebrated these days as diversity is encouraged.

  • Not illegal at all, just looks bogan. What type of car? Tried sterling spares for a new one? They are normally very cheap.

  • A front bumper would be easy to repaint. The only tricky part would be finding the matching colour code, but this should be easy online. Sand, prime, colour, sand, colour, sand, clear, sand, clear. Should be quite quick.

    • colour, sand, colour, sand, clear, sand, clear

What's with all the sanding? You don't need to sand inbetween coats

You should always sand between coats. A very fine grade of paper will give you a smoother finish. For example.

        • If you're talking a professional paint job, they don't sand between coats.

You prime a panel if it needs it, sand it, usually 3 coats of base coat. 2 for coverage and a third light coat for metallic or pearl paints which helps the metallic or pearl particles stand up, and then 2 coats of clear. No sanding takes place after sanding the primer.

If you're after a flat finish, you can wait for the paint to cure, give it a sand and re-clear, which is known as flow coating, or you can colour sand the texture out, cut and polish

    Of course not, lol.

do people judge you on this? Does it attract attentions on the roads ? I don't really 'judge' but I do notice, and make the kind of instant connection, part been replaced and got wrong colour cos its cheaper and couldn't be bothered repainting etc. I notice it more on a door I think, 1 door wrong colour, kind of stands out like dogs balls. Bumper, not so much IMO.

If it's white, can you paint red/maroon on top of it without scraping the exiting color.

You could and I probably would . Thats not to say that it will be as good a job, or last as long, compared if done properly and all sanded back, cleaned etc, as per proper way to do it. Depends on value of vehicle. If it's like a 100k showcar, of course I would want it looking perfect.
I would just keep as white probably. Get friend to hold it up to where it is going to go on car, step back, see how it looks ie. If the red/maroon of your car looks decent againt the white.

I judge/avoid a car with a huge dint in it, or half bumper smashed up, I think crap, I wanna stay away from you. And if they reverse out or drive out dangerously into traffic without giving way as they should, and I almost hit them in side, then I see the big ding in side or back, I presume it is likely cos they are a bad and dangerous driver and the accident was their fault. So I guess I 'judge' there.

    It is illegal.

Under the commonwealth car crimes act (1957) section 127 (a) (II) - the bumper of the designated vehicle must not be more 50th handed 2 shades of colour outside of the cars body colour. Penalty 1 year imprisonment and 55 penalty units.

    1. if it IS illigal, you would never ever get in trouble for it

    2. oh god yes, i would. and so would most other people. u can have a crap car and no one cares. but have a car with a different colour panel? whole different story.

    3. if your asking how to paint it, i doubt it would ever be perfect. just get it as close as you can. u can actualy get car paint in spray cans that they custom fill for you. they "try" to match the colour or they can find you the code. i think they do it at supercheap or autobarn? one of those

I think the best solution here is to paint your car white to match the bumper.

    • Office works have a special on liquid paper.

  • if its an old car just get one of the auto spares to mix u a few cans of the same colour code and diy at home… may not look the best but won't stand out like a sore thumb, and you won't go to jail
