Norwegian Things to Try Not in Guidebooks

I'll be going to Norway for 2 weeks during their summer. I'm not really asking for places to go as we've got that mapped out.

1) I would like to know some of the things that we should try to do that aren't typically described in guidebooks. A very typical thing that only Norwegians would do. For example, especially the elderly Hong Kong locals, like having yum cha at 6AM!

2) What are some foods to try? I've already read about reindeer meat, sheeps head, variations of salmon, hot-dogs, brown cheese, meatballs etc

3) What are some inexpensive things to buy or snacks to bring home that I wouldn't find in Australia or Asia?

4) And lastly, any money saving tips? Its a bloody expensive country, I think I will stop complaining how expensive Australia is. I'll be stopping overnight in BKK, so I'll stocking up on beer, food and snacks before heading off to Norway. I've already got my Fjord, Olso and Bergen passes as well.

I'm open to whatever replies that comes first in your mind even if its repeated elsewhere.

I'll be in Oslo, Bergen to Alesund return trip in a rental car and then finishing it off at Stavanger.

What did Norway say when you asked them?

  • Every beach in Norway is a breast friendly beach. Try not to stare.

    Olso

    It’s Oslo.

    • also Áslo

  • 1) Church burning.

  • Drinking out of the skulls of your enemies

  • Try the local Hooch they make their own brews very potent, Alcohol is controlled by the government so it's too expensive for most of them, even the bottle shops are controlled by gov.

Man do they throw a good party once the pubs are closed.

I normally stay in Stavanger on the waterfront, but you can jump on the fast hydrofoil boats to other local cities like jumping on a bus.

but it's a beautiful place some of the food isn't for everyone but Bergen a bit further up the coast is also really nice.

I'd spend some time and work out a plan of things to go see look at. it's worth it.

They speak English well so you can normally find someone to help out, The people are friendly and very direct so when someone walks through you without taking a second look in a pub don't feel like you have done something wrong or walking up to them and making a scene, they are just direct and they're not out to hurt you just don't expect an apology or an excuse me. Just as they wouldn't from you.

Also never leave a drink unattended, the locals just take them to drink so you don't have to worry about a drink being spiked they just vanish if you take your eye of them.

    • Akevitt tastes a bit like vodka. It's best consumed in the colder months.

Take a walk up Karl Johans to Det Kongelige Slottet, then double back to Spikersuppa, turn right to Raadhuset and continue to Aker brygge for lunch. Finish you meal and keep walking to you hit Astrup Fearnley and the surrounding galleries.

  • Things they go mad for are these salty lollies, not something I'm into but they love em.

  • I tried whale meat when I was there last June, it was part of the breakfast smorgasbord at the hotel so I thought I might as well try it as there's no way I'd order whale meat on its own.

  • Is Norway the country that's (in)famous for its pungent pickled herring? I'd try that.

    • That's Denmark.

  • Try and get there before the 23 of July. Sankthans is big deal over there and something you don't miss out on.

  • Try the snus and candies. Snus is amazing stuff, really packs a punch.

    • snus

      This honour goes the Swedes.

      • True, but they have a few brands available in Norway (try Siberia if you want to blow your head off). The traditional Swedish stuff like General and Ettan are the best though.

    • Are there bars with spitoons for the Snus users, do Snus users carry around personal spitoons to gob into or do they just spit brown tobacco stained crap everywhere in public?

      :D

  • I ate a moose burger in Norway. It was tasty but my Mrs wasn't a fan of my flatulence afterward.

  • I to are heading to Norway and are still planning my trip. Stavanger to do Pulpit,Bergen, and Norway in a nutshall DIY.Staying in Flam and then oslo.Accommodation wise not to bad apart from Flam. I was in Iceland last Sept and wasn't that expensive as lead to believe. Switzerland on the other hand is "omg" expensive im finding!!
