Subaru Impreza 09 - Grinding Noise at Low Speeds When Braking

Hey Guys, just want some help on this issue!

My car has grinding noises when it brakes at very low speeds(before a complete stop), this only happens after X amount of driving/braking.

I have replaced brand new rotors and brake pads using copper anti seize lubricant at contact points of pads to calipers and the sound is not happening as often as before but is still occurring. I have brought this car in to Lucas Automotive (Subaru specialist) to check up on other things and have brought this by him, however as the noise doesn't happen often he did not hear any fault.

What do you guys reckon and what are some steps I can take to check ?

  • Pad retaining spring not seated right?

    • The pad piston? I have compressed it before working on it and pumped the brakes a few times after the job to ensure brake pressure, other than that i dont think it would be it

      • No… I mean the anti rattle spring on each pad.

    wheel bearings…

    • How abouts would i go checking this ? I've heard wheel bearings making a clicking noise when bad

    • Quite possibly this.

  • I have replaced brand new rotors and brake pads

How long ago (or how many kms) did you do this? Sometimes it takes time for the pads to seat properly with the new rotors.

    • I have driven them roughly 500-600KMs already, happens rarely but it happens

Could be the body kit scraping on the ground.

    • Ha! Underrated.

  • Did you get the correct pad for your car?

    • Yes correct pads from repco

Solution - turn up the doof doof

    • +1 for funny but working solution.

I would go to a gentle hill and roll down it slowly with the engine off.

  • Hey guys also forgot to mention, the pads i got didnt come with replacement brake hardware so this is currently the old hardware, i've cleaned and lubricated them at contact points

    • Perhaps you could get a mate to video the slow braking and post it in a dedicated Subaru forum or youtube. It could be uneven piston application and check to see if you need to put any shim.

    don't break at low speeds

Check out grindr website for info on grinding

  • i think your AYC diff / active yaw control, is konking out

    or maybe wheel bearings
