Swapping Carrier to Swap Back onto New Service

So i'm on optus at the moment on a sim only plan but finished my contract. I want to sign up to optus again with their new plan but it's new contracts only. I need to port my number out to telstra/voda and port back onto optus.

Obviously when i asked optus they were hesitant and didn't advise me to do this and just told me to get a new service and cancel my current one (therefore not keeping my old phone number). They said what i was thinking of doing is fine but wouldn't say if there were any restrictions or minimum time periods.
Wondering if anyone has done this and knows how quickly you can transfer numbers out and back in?

Cheers

  • From a porting perspective, I wouldn't recommend trying to port out and back in on the same day

I'd just buy a prepaid Telstra or Voda pack (whatevers on special at coles/woolies) and just use that for a month

  • Think the normal waiting period is 30 days

  • Which Optus plan is it that is only for new services?

  • I wouldn't recommend this. If this is for an offer for new services only, jump on the phone and negotiate so that they offer you the same price. It may take time but it saves you from the hassle of porting out and back in.

  • The telcos don't seem to have the porting process down pat yet so you run the risk of complications.

As long as you wait until at least the following business day, after your number has successfully ported out, to port back in, then you should be fine. If you port too soon, then the “open case” related to the initial port out may not have been closed properly, which can not only create some big headaches, but will almost certainly cause you to be denied this deal, since you’ll have to explain what you were doing in order to get it remedied.
Having said that, even if you do everything correctly there can still be issues (although I’ve only ever seen one number ‘lost’ in several years of Telco work) which needs to be kept in mind when doing something like this.

Optus have massively tightened their scrutiny of Port Out & Ins over the last couple years. This was largely due to seeing a high churn between Optus and Virgin (with smaller MVNOs to a lesser extent) when deals for “new customers” popped up. Optus/Singtel then put out the directive that, for example, certain Virgin deals were not to be given to port ins from Optus. When this happened, there was a large number of people using Telstra/Voda prepaid as an intermediate porting step, to which the business eventually became aware. Any staff member who is following procedure would notice what you’re attempting to do, and should block it. But following procedure isn’t always the highest priority in Telcos, so you should hopefully be fine. Giving it a longer period of time before porting back in would be ideal, but it’s up to you.
