Connecting Flight in Brisbane Airport - Enough Time?

Hi all,

Seeking some advice from anyone with knowledge of Brisbane Airport, or perhaps just traveling in general!

I am looking at a domestic Qantas flight that arrives at Brisbane Airport at 635pm.

Then looking to catch the 9pm international Emirates Flight to Dubai. This is not a connecting flight package.

This is a 2H 25m theoretical gap to retrieve bags and check in and board again.

Is this going to be too risky or not allowed at all perhaps? Is it possible to alert Emirates about this plan and would they even care (in case there is a delay)?

Cheers.

Is it a connecting flight, or two separate bookings?

If it is all on 1 ticket, your bags will be moved for you and you just need to walk to the other flight. If separate, you are running a risk. If the flight is on time, you should be fine. If the first flight is delayed, or you get held up at customs, or anything, you might be out of luck.

If they are separate booking, Emirates won't care.

    • It's two separate bookings. Thx for the advice

Is your Qantas flight domestic? If it is then you will need to collect your bags and catch a free shuttle bus to the International Terminal.
International check in normally closes 60 minutes before departure, as long as the Qantas flight is not running late then you should be fine.

    • Thanks very much.

I assume in normal circumstances that Qantas/Emirates would have made this a connecting flight package. However they must have a time rule where if there is not an acceptable amount of free time then they won't allow it/won't be able to guarantee it… hence me having to take my own risk.

In most circumstances you should be fine but it's still a bit risky if your Qantas flight arrives at the domestic terminal. If you have the opportunity to book an earlier flight into Brisbane I definitely would. Not worth the stress with tight connections.

    • Thanks. Travelling with a baby so trying to reduce total travel time. But I guess it's better to teach the final destination than not at all…

We don't have DST in QLD. So literally you have a 3H 25M window. I see no problem in this.

The arrival time would be brisbane time.

    • Thx but all times quoted are local time

  • I've done the reverse - Dubai > Brisbane > Sydney and i had heaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaps of time to spare, but the sticking point is the Domestic to International hop. You have to change terminals, and then still check in

Probably doable but a little risky. I think you'd be ok because Qantas usually gets preference (to the other Aussie airlines) in Australian airports and tends not to run late

    • The reverse you're only risking missing the domestic flight. OP is risking missing the flight to Dubai.

  • Should be plenty of time as long as your first flight isnt significantly delayed. Always a risk when the fligts are on separate tickets.

  • You really only have 1hr 25 min because Emirates check in closes at 8pm. Doable but highly risky. Maybe have a backup plan of what you will do if you miss the Emirates check in.

  • if time is short when you arrive at Bris (due to delayed Qantas flight) then forget the terminal bus -which is every 15minutes apparently- and just jump in a taxi.

or there is also the airpark (blue) bus which goes from Domestic to International (and then to parking)

terminal bus or airpark bus. or if pushed for time then taxi.

when I flew back from melb last sunday night there were a bunch of people (~50) waiting for the terminal bus. their domestic flight had been late and they were rushing to get to international. they were quite peeved that they had been waiting 25 minutes for the terminal bus.

    • Yep, after 7pm terminal transfer bus is every 25 mins.

Absolutely ridiculous for 'Australia's New World City'.

    • Thanks, that is good to know.

How long does it roughly take to get from terminal to terminal by bus vs taxi? Just would like to know so I can judge what method is needed at the moment in time.

Both will take similar time, about 5 mins.

Obviously the advantage of a taxi is you shouldn't have to wait for one.
