VB Gold is essentially the same beer as Great Northern; just like Fosters (sold in the UK) is the same beer as Crown Lager (sold in Australia).
Carlton & United tried to take on XXXX Gold with VB Gold back in the 2000s and failed; why would Queenslanders drink an obvious "Gold" rip off with the word Victoria in it? So CUB licked their wounds, went back to the drawing board, relaunched another mid-strength with a Marlin on it and told all the pubs they have taps in to start pouring Great Northern. Boom, market share achieved.
