AirAsia 1.9 Million Seat Sale and Other AirAsia 'sales'

Airasia haven't had a BIG sale for awhile and I don't think their current offering sale is anywhere near as good as their previous sales.

But, we all get itchy feet and I seem to be uncertain about the strength of future Airasia sales.

Now, I pretty much always holiday in NSW school holidays and usually Airasia doesn't increase fares much; but I think this might be changing.

Anwyays, I just booked SYD-PHUKET 4/10/19 (friday) <-> 12/10/19 (Saturday) (inside NSW school holidays) for $428 including no luggage, no selected seat and 4 meals.
(You can get the entire school holidays at about the same price).

The return leg is the cheaper leg at $184-ish.

Interestingly booking just SYD-KUL on the same dates costs $150+ more; which is a bit weird for Airasia.

If anyone would like to explain Airasia's current pricing I am all ears.

PS. Paypal is fee-free when booking.

  • Airfare pricing has never been about the distance travelled. People who need to go to KUL for business or to visit family are probably prepared to pay more than people who want to go to Phuket for a beach holiday so AirAsia and many other airlines takes advantage of this.

    • Sure but this has not historically been the case with airasia; which does point to point ticketing.
ie. Getting off at KL (and not doing the other leg) never voided the return legs.

I want to know if this is a change.

      • Once you are a no show It always voids subsequent legs

        • This is incorrect.

          (see airlines)

For the SYD->KUL->HKT although 'fly-thru' it is still considered by airasia as two point to point one-way trips.

          Same for the HKT->KUL->SYD.

UNLESS THEY HAVE CHANGED THEIR RULES RECENTLY.

EDIT2: I don't think they have updated their terms and conditions. Point 5 here still says one-way tickets.

          • @Eeples: I have nfi what you are talking about

            • @Donaldhump: Full service airlines use a PNR which wraps the outward and return ticket together and if you do not complete the 1st left then the whole PNR is usually voided.

But many, if not all LCC's, do not use PNR's but instead just use the booking code.
This has meant that even though you book a return ticket you are essentially booking two one-way tickets as there is usually no tracking if the first leg was made or not (even though it is on the same booking code).

I have a 'feeling' that for Airasia this might have changed for some ticketing.

              • @Eeples: ok you seem to know, i never knew that.

but i also dont pay to fly, given i fly for a living

                • @Donaldhump: That’s just it though. I thought I did know.

                  But I think it’s changed.

                  • @Eeples: the question your asking is a hidden city question though not about taking a return leg only

a->b->C will often be cheaper than a->b only

  • Kul is hub city, where as Phuket is not.

Lookup web site skiplagged for explanation

    • skiplag has my dates for flights SYD<->KL for $516 (getting off at KL and not going thru to Phuket). So it seams Airasia has not changed its point-point ticketing. ie. the return legs are not voided.

For SYD<->Phuket it has it at $412.

      Something is screwy here.

      • +2

That’s because when going to Phuket you can go many airlines that involve 1 stop

With kul there is one or 2 direct only, so there is less competition

Lax to dfw is 2x the price of lax to fll via dfw… just skip lag it, ie book x to z via y and walk off at y

Remember budget airline are not safe.( lack of maintenance ).

  • +1

    Singapore Airline 10/10 dude.

    • Singapore is 7/7 the SAME as Airasia.

If you can share a link to 10/10 or a link showing poor maintenance for Airasia feel free.

  • LOL.

  • Okay, I have worked it all out.

As Airasia is a point-point airline if you by a return ticket or a fly-thru ticket you are in fact buying two one-way tickets.

So for simple SYD<->KUL return ticket if you fail to make the SYD->KUL leg you can still use the KUL->SYD return leg. (eg. if you miss your outward flight, then decided to jump on a Qantas one-way flight…. you can come back on your original return…… since you have essentially booked two one-way tickets (SYD->KUL and KUL->SYD)

For the slightly more complicated Fly-Thu ticket eg. SYD-KUL-HKT return; again you have bought two one-way tickets SYD->HKT and HKT->SYD.

Now, if you just fly SYD->KUL that's fine but your return must start at HKT and you cannot just board it at KUL back to SYD. (As your one-way point to point ticket is from HKT->SYD). This means if you wanted a little stop-over in KUL you would need to buy another KUL->HKT ticket which is only about $30 anyways; so you can use your return ticket from HKT).

And of course if you miss your outward flight…. you can still use your HKT->SYD return ticket… but you got to get there.

Apparently this is not a change; but I thought it was.

    Any questions?

    • This also means it does seem cheaper at the moment to book two 1-way tickets SYD-KUL-HKT and KUL-SYD and just not continue on to HKT…. than…. booking SYD-KUL return ticket.

(Assuming you have no checked baggage).

  • Air asia BIG sale is on atm. Unfortunately they seem to have more consistently jacked fares for NSW school holidays even during sales. Buggers.

Having said that once you are out of the country fares are pretty cheap. (eg. $109 KUL-Seoul one way [not bad for a 6.5hr flight], $32 KUL-Bali one way)

I booked for April 2020 NSW school holidays SYD<->KUL for $400 (no bags with 2 meals) and KUL<->Bali for $100 (no bags with 2 meals).
[There are certainly cheaper SYD-KUL return fares out there….$276 in Feb 2020 for example]

However, I may end up burning the KUL-Bali, if I decide to be more adventurous.

Cools story?… prolly needs more dragons.

1993 just called… they wanted their prolly back.
