Travel Inspiration - Around the World Trip

Hi Everyone,

Looking to the OzBargain world for help in inspiration. Looking to do a around the world trip and looking for some inspiration for places/things to do that are a little bit unique and off the beaten track. Think ‘farm stay’, ‘surf retreat’, ‘forest lodge’ or anything else truly memorable - things you may not find in a Lonely Planet guide.

Will probably spend time in Africa, South/Central America and Europe, but open to Asia and North America as well.

Thank you!

Unique and Australian gap year? Not going to happen.

    • Where you may have failed, I know many that have achieved…

      • Countless unique surf retreat personal journeys, huh?

Why don't you buck the trend and be an Australian au pair in France.

        • Now you’re starting to get the idea

  • maybe watch dark tourism on netflix

    • yeah true, I watched it and had been to most of the places in the episodes I saw, but yeah, most people don't do those things.

I did an 18 mont around the world trip visiting places like this. www.atlasobscura.com was my bible and I ended up writing, photographing and discovering new places for them along the way!

A few things I did which you might be interested in (off the top of my head):

Visited nitrate ghost towns in Chile,
Slept in the worlds 3rd largest cave
    Popularised the Hue abandoned waterpark
    Explored/scaled the Buzludzha monument
Been to the Bangkok plae graveyard
    Bolivian train graveyard
drove from london to kosovo and back
    trans siberian railway
stayed in a yurt with a Mongolian family
    Amazon rainforset
Explored the hidden valley in peru and explored more off the beaten paths in peru (seriously cool shit in the north)
travelled through cuba before the tourism boom
Meteora (skip the greek islands and go here.)
Towns built into rock faces in Spain
Explored tonnes of abandoned places/buildings/areas etc.
Photographed the 12th "celebrations" in northern Ireland.
    Hitch hiked all over Europe.
    Been inked by 1up crew.
    Cycled Iceland by bike

    • Awesome photos mate, What is the technique you have used for the editing? Cheers!

      • Hmm quite a few techniques, depends which ones you mean. But I was a bit obsessed with HDR for a little bit haha.

    • Great work, in every aspect. Did you do all this alone or did you travel with others?

      • Thanks mate. I did it all alone, traveling solo gives you much more flexibility to do things like this.

  • I call for the inauguration of the Oz bargain pilgrimage to rebuild the buddhas of Afghanistan
