Coil Whine on Laptop from JB Hi Fi

I bought a dell XPS13 for my sister's birthday March last year, there was a little coil whine then but my sister said she didn't mind it. However she doesn't use it anymore and gave it to me. I can't stand the coil whine, it's horrible. Would I be able to return it since it's still under warranty?

You should be able to get it repaired, but likely not replaced because you’ve waited so long

    • repair is good too, I like the laptop. Thanks

      • Not sure on 'repair'. Coil whine is usually caused electrical current going through a power-regulating component like a transformer or inductor. Dell XPS 13 laptops are infamous for this issue.

Unfortunately coil whine might not be enough for JB Hifi to accept a repair. YMMV.

        • Oh really…so nothing I can do about it if JB Hi Fi refuses?

          • @[Deactivated]: If JB Hifi refuses, you can always call up Dell directly. Their customers service for the XPS line is pretty good. But yeah - coil whine is one of those things that is in the gray area for if they accept it as a defect at all.

            • @HighAndDry: If it's not a defect, what is it? haha

              • @[Deactivated]: Common characteristic of the product. Like a laptop's cooling fans will also make noise. (Not saying I agree, but it's an arguable point - fans will create noise, coils will whine).

          • @[Deactivated]: Argue or speak to Dell. But coil whine can be a design issue which may not be easily fixable.

            • @tanksinatra: No worries, thanks

  • Call up Dell or jbhifi.

  • Its a VERY common issue with the XPS 13
