Am I getting brand new PC parts?

Need someone’s advice who works in the industry.

I recently ordered a PC from Tech Fast. I requested the parts be shipped to me brand new in their boxes as I want to do the build myself. Tech Fast said that’s not a problem so I have just been waiting for my order to be shipped.

It’s a fairly high end PC… threadripper cpu and GTX 2080 etc. I’ve now been advised that some of the parts will not be in their original packaging because they get sent the parts ORM. So for example my GTX 2080 will not be sent in its original box but in a static bag which I am not a fan of but also I’m not sure if that’s normal. Can anyone who works in the industry advise if this is normal practice? If it is, then I have no problem with it, just wanted to make sure I am getting brand new parts. Cheers.

I think what you refer to OEM products are those items that are sold in bulk to computer package builders. Which doesn't comes with pretty boxes, manuals etc. That is normal and save money.

    • Many hardware producers offer items in static free bags.

Hard disks is one example. So the "big shop" gets a proper "shock proof" container with 8 or 12 hard disks units each in its own static free bag. Then they re-sell one by one.

So for example my GTX 2080 will not be sent in its original box but in a static bag

Pretty standard. Difference between Retail packaging (pretty boxes, manuals, etc) and OEM packaging - which are sold as, well, parts in static bags, to system integrators and retailers who'll put the part directly into a system anyway.

    • Thanks for that.

    • Would warranty difference be a consideration? Not sure if OEM sold graphics card would have the same RMA process as retail or if you would need to go back to vendor. Also might be shorter warranty periods.

      • You'd go back to the vendor anyway, not the manufacturer. They'd go to the manufacturer in the same way as if they'd just built the PC for you instead of sending you the parts separate.

  • Check the gold contacts if you are worried. OEM is common. Might mean you miss out on free games.

    • Excuse my n00bness. What should I be looking for? In particular the GPU.

      • Contacts won't mean much as there'll be some scratches from testing anyway and even if it was plugged in use, it doesn't add to the scratches. You'll want to look at making sure there's no dust or dirt in the fans, it still has plastic protective covers, plastic end caps on the ports etc. You'll know if it's used. Would be more worried about double and triple checking warranty on it.

I'm baffled why you're splashing out top of the range GTX 2080 then went inferior AMD Threadripper route instead of Intel….

        • I think it's justified for 2080 as it has RTX + DLSS while pricing ain't far off 1080Ti and AMD has no competing product.

But intel HEDT? Crap offering. That's why.

          Threadripper build any day.

        • Was that Techfast deal. Other deals at approx same price come with vastly inferior boards.

Other option was the i7 8700, but can't be obercocked. Or the r7 for slightly less (a320 board).

IMO with the pricing threadripper was at this was the best choice.

@N1NJ4W4RR10R: Yep. Tech fast deal for reasons you described.

        • Any quality manufacturer uses ZIF for testing. It's been around for decades lol.

        • Thanks for that. It was the best available deal going and will more than cover all I I’ll ever need it for. I got the Techfast 1920 threadripper deal for $1900, it’s a pretty good price.

          • @[Deactivated]: Congrats! It's a good price because the rest of the components will be relatively cheap/low quality looking at their list but it'll suit you well. 12 months warranty on the entire package removes the concern about GPU OEM warranty.

            • @Hybroid: Yeah, I am going to upgrade the case, power supply and add some more RAM to bring it up a tier. Will serve me well for the next 5+ years.

            • @Hybroid: Not necessarily. Believe the psu was a thermaltake one (low quality, but shouldn't die), Mobo can't be low quality, case is (IMO) pretty fine.

RAM's sorta low quality. But team group's pretty good, just comes down to 2400mhz. Of that bothers you though, sell it for $180-$200 and buy some better stuff. Cooler may be low quality, not sure, GPU's a 2080, can't really be bad (none of the brands they throw out anyways)

Not sure if there's anything else that could really be low quality?

But yeah, with the threadripper (1920x) effectively being equal to an r7 1800x, at $1,900 that's stupidly good value IMO.

              • @N1NJ4W4RR10R: Thanks for the tips. I will reevaluate it once it comes in. I know this thing generates some real heat so power supply and case were my biggest concerns but now you have me thinking I could save some money and get away with it. I’ll hopefully get it next week so I’ll be sure to come back and give a full spec sheet. Thanks again for the feedback.

@[Deactivated]: Some things to note, I've heard the glass gets heated with those beefy GPUs. I haven't heard of any damage happening due to this however.

Some people aren't a fan of the thermaltake PSU. Personally IMO should be fine, system shouldn't draw anywhere near 750w and I doubt thermaltake would make a super low quality PSU…worse case, it dies and you have to buy another. It shouldn't explode/wipe out other parts.

But yeah, should be fine. Just wanted to make sure I could give as much info as I can.

                  • @N1NJ4W4RR10R: The glass as in the glass on the PC case? Hmm, I think they are mostly tempered so I presume nothing to worry about? I was thinking of getting the Thermaltake level 20 GT case because the CPU gets quite hot apparently. Maybe that’s a bit overkill? I’m not sure how good the watercooling it comes with is.

I’d be glad on saving money on a power supply as from everything I read, people were saying Tech Fast provide crappyno name Chinese power supply’s so I was going to get an evga supernova 750-1000w. If it’s decent like you say that’s great, saves me a few hundreds bucks.

Yeah keep it coming man. Any info is greatly appreciated. I want to put this thing together once and not have any issues in the coming years so any and all feedback is great.

@[Deactivated]: Regardless, best to wait till you get the stuff before you buy alternatives.

@N1NJ4W4RR10R: Yeah just sorta planning what if’s at the moment. I should have it early next week hopefully. I’ll post up the specs then. Hopefully I get lucky.

  • Got my parts finally on the Friday. Was away for the weekend so only just saw it now. Very happy with what I got for $1900. It was worth the wait. I think the motherboard and extra RAM plus the TT case are the extra bonuses I didn’t expect, but happy I got :D
